Book excerpt: One of the things I learned on this thousand-mile walk is I am only vulnerable when I hide and, I hide when I feel threatened, not up to the challenge, or I am ashamed about something. Also, I realized as humans, most of us are always host to at least one if not all three conditions that invest heavily in our sense of guilt, shame and fear. These conditions exist greatly because of the ill will that we have projected and invested in the image of our own creation, not understanding the power we put into such an investment, nor do many of us have the spiritual understanding of the spoken and unspoken word, and its internal and external power over our thought processes as well as our behavior. On the other hand, I believe with positivism one can disinvest in all ones negativity. One cannot do harm to ones neighbor without doing harm to ones own character, self-esteem, emotional and mental stability; ones own sense of self is diminished. Let us step out of fear and free the heart; free the heart and step into the power of ones eternal-self and you are, once again, walking in humanity, in spirit, reflecting the loving image of Spirit, not the confusion we have placed upon such a concept.

Book excerpt: Motionless, Suzanne gazed across the river at exploding images of destruction and despair as the city she called home had just been shattered. Staring at the billows of smoke that now engulfed downtown, she realized that the world had changed forever. This was not a scene from some far away war torn place. This was New York City. Her country's freedom now under attack, Suzanne finds herself without a job and without a purpose. Finding a severance notice in her inbox, she leaves behind her comfortable executive lifestyle and journeys alone beyond her comfort zone to liberate her spirit and claim personal freedom. Traveling with a sense of adventure in her heart and only what possessions she can carry in a backpack, she finds her way to the far corners of the world where few have ventured. Suzanne takes us on a rich, personal odyssey, returning home one year later to Ground Zero where it all began. As she returns to her beloved city, she is filled with renewed purpose, a broader perspective of the world, and a greater understanding of herself and humanity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whether you call them gods, angels, ETs, or aliens, sufficient proof now exists that beings more advanced than humans have influenced our history. Evidence suggests that these outsiders shaped our religions, genes, technology, and cultures. In fact, they may have provided the impetus for modern civilization. Paul Von Ward investigates why modern science and religion refuse to address the possibility that humans interact with Advanced Beings (ABs). He reviews sacred texts, myths and legends--from the Old Testament, Hebrew texts, and the Vedas, to the Greek myths, Sumerian tablets, and other historical sources to make the link between religions, their gods, and alien intervention. He shows how this history of AB intervention has been suppressed and challenges readers to reexamine the origins of notions like “divine revelation” to find common ground among the world’s cultures and religions. Previously published as God, Genes, and Consciousness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Including two new chapters on Alex Honnold’s free solo ascent of the iconic 3,000-foot El Capitan in Yosemite National Park. On June 3rd, 2017, Alex Honnold became the first person to free solo Yosemite's El Capitan—to scale the wall without rope, a partner, or any protective gear—completing what was described as "the greatest feat of pure rock climbing in the history of the sport" (National Geographic) and "one of the great athletic feats of any kind, ever" (New York Times). Already one of the most famous adventure athletes in the world, Honnold has now been hailed as "the greatest climber of all time" (Vertical magazine). Alone on the Wall recounts the most astonishing achievements of Honnold’s extraordinary life and career, brimming with lessons on living fearlessly, taking risks, and maintaining focus even in the face of extreme danger. Now Honnold tells, for the first time and in his own words, the story of his 3 hours and 56 minutes on the sheer face of El Cap, which Outside called "the moon landing of free soloing…a generation-defining climb. Bad ass and beyond words…one of the pinnacle sporting moments of all time."

To Never Walk Alone! 1930-2001, 2001-2012, by Susan Shanks, PhD, Professor Emerita of the Department of Communicative Disorders and Deaf Studies at California State University, Fresno, is an inspiring autobiography of a disabled, single Christian woman's walk with God as He molded her for special ministries. The author describes how she coped in a dysfunctional family and continues with the story of how God led her during her struggle with polio and the years she prepared to teach in an elementary school classroom (BEd), to work as a speech therapist in a rehabilitation clinic (MA), and to teach speech-language pathology at a university (PhD). Susan also focuses her work on the ministries she began after retirement and a period of sadness following the long illness and death of her loving, lifelong caregiver-her mother. Finally, the reader is told how the author is guided in her attempts to maintain an independent lifestyle, even through illness. The themes of faith, hope, and trust sing through this book, which relates a tale of an abundant life overflowing with small miracles.

Joon had a good life with her parents-she was loved and cared for the way all eight-year-olds should be. Then, one horrible day, her parents died, and she was put into the foster care system. When Joon is placed with a single mother, Aron, and her two sons, nothing could have prepared her for the cruelty and brutality she would be subjected to over the next four years. When things escalate and her foster brother Deen threatens her, Joon takes to the streets to escape the viciousness of her foster family and start her life over. On the streets, Joon finally finds comfort with a group of homeless teenagers. But things are never what they seem, and there is always a price to pay for safety on the streets. NEVER BE ALONE is a story of homelessness but hopefulness, as Joon's relentless determination eventually helps her find her place in the world and make a difference.

Book excerpt: An innovative, two-in-one picture book follows a parallel day in the life of two families: one in a Western city and one in a North African village. Somewhere in Sydney, Australia, a boy and his family wake up, eat breakfast, and head out for a busy day of shopping. Meanwhile, in a small village in Morocco, a boy and his family go through their own morning routines and set out to a bustling market. In this ingenious, wordless picture book, readers are invited to compare, page by page, the activities and surroundings of children in two different cultures. Their lives may at first seem quite unalike, but a closer look reveals that there are many things, some unexpected, that connect them as well. Designed to be read side by side — one from the left and the other from the right — these intriguing stories are told entirely through richly detailed collage illustrations.

Book excerpt: In a warm and vivid style, the author describes life with her identical twin from early childhood to young adulthood. The setting is Bavaria in the mid 1930s to the 1950s. The twins' closeness helps them cope with the adversities of war and the untimely death of their father. They share the same experiences and emotions, and they enjoy the same activities. They view their togetherness as the key to happiness and promise each other never to get separated, never to get married. As teenagers they fend off a persistent suitor that pursues one of them while threatening the other. But then, in their early twenties, the twins fall in love with the men of their dreams, men totally different in their backgrounds, education and personalities. One is a German physicist, the other an Arabian businessman. Yet, in spite of living and raising their families in two different continents, the twins maintain their close relationship.

The core of the work is the script of the play itself, which is accompanied by a description of the script development process, from the research in the field to rehearsals for public performances. In a supporting essay, the author argues that both ethnography and theatre can be understood as designs for being together in unusual ways, and that both practices can be deepened by recognizing the vibrant social impact of interdependency animated by vulnerability, as identified by disability theorists and activists.

Book excerpt: A natural history of the wilderness in our homes, from the microbes in our showers to the crickets in our basements Even when the floors are sparkling clean and the house seems silent, our domestic domain is wild beyond imagination. In Never Home Alone, biologist Rob Dunn introduces us to the nearly 200,000 species living with us in our own homes, from the Egyptian meal moths in our cupboards and camel crickets in our basements to the lactobacillus lounging on our kitchen counters. You are not alone. Yet, as we obsess over sterilizing our homes and separating our spaces from nature, we are unwittingly cultivating an entirely new playground for evolution. These changes are reshaping the organisms that live with us -- prompting some to become more dangerous, while undermining those species that benefit our bodies or help us keep more threatening organisms at bay. No one who reads this engrossing, revelatory book will look at their homes in the same way again.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seven essays celebrating the beauty of the imperfect marriage. We hear plenty about whether or not to get married, but much less about what it takes to stay married. Clichés around marriage—eternal bliss, domestic harmony, soul mates—leave out the real stuff. After marriage you may still want to sleep with other people. Sometimes your partner will bore the hell out of you. And when stuck paying for your spouse’s mistakes, you might miss being single. In Wedding Toasts I’ll Never Give, Ada Calhoun presents an unflinching but also loving portrait of her own marriage, opening a long-overdue conversation about the institution as it truly is: not the happy ending of a love story or a relic doomed by high divorce rates, but the beginning of a challenging new chapter of which “the first twenty years are the hardest.” Calhoun’s funny, poignant personal essays explore the bedrooms of modern coupledom for a nuanced discussion of infidelity, existential anxiety, and the many other obstacles to staying together. Both realistic and openhearted, Wedding Toasts I’ll Never Give offers a refreshing new way to think about marriage as a brave, tough, creative decision to stay with another person for the rest of your life. “What a burden,” Calhoun calls marriage, “and what a gift.”
