Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an attempt to convey the colorful facets of condensed matter systems with reduced dimensionality. Some of the specific features predicted for interacting one-dimensional electron systems, such as charge- and spin-density waves, have been observed in many quasi-one-dimensional materials. The two-dimensional world is even richer: besides d-wave superconductivity and the Quantum Hall Effect - perhaps the most spectacular phases explored during the last two decades - many collective charge and spin states have captured the interest of researchers, such as charge stripes or spontaneously generated circulating currents. Recent years have witnessed important progress in material preparation, measurement techniques and theoretical methods. Today larger and better samples, higher flux for neutron beams, advanced light sources, better resolution in electron spectroscopy, new computational algorithms, and the development of field-theoretical approaches allow an in-depth analysis of the complex many-body behaviour of low-dimensional materials. The epoch when simple mean-field arguments were sufficient for describing the gross features observed experimentally is definitely over. The Editors' aim is to thoroughly explain a number of selected topics: the application of dynamical probes, such as neutron scattering, optical absorption and photoemission, as well as transport studies, both electrical and thermal. Some of the more theoretical chapters are directly relevant for experiments, such as optical spectroscopy, transport in one-dimensional models, and the phenomenology of charge inhomogeneities in layered materials, while others discuss more general topics and methods, for example the concept of a Luttinger liquid and bosonization, or duality transformations, both promising tools for treating strongly interacting many-body systems.

Book excerpt: This thesis shows how a combination of analytic and numerical techniques, such as a time dependent and finite temperature Density Matrix Renormalization Group (DMRG) technique, can be used to obtain the physical properties of low dimensional quantum magnets with an unprecedented level of accuracy. A comparison between the theory and experiment then enables these systems to be used as quantum simulators; for example, to test various generic properties of low dimensional systems such as Luttinger liquid physics, the paradigm of one dimensional interacting quantum systems. Application of these techniques to a material made of weakly coupled ladders (BPCB) allowed the first quantitative test of Luttinger liquids. In addition, other physical quantities (magnetization, specific heat etc.), and more remarkably the spins-spin correlations – directly measurable in neutron scattering experiments – were in excellent agreement with the observed quantities. We thus now have tools to quantitatiively assess the dynamics for this class of quantum systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quite a few low-dimensional magnets are quantum-disordered 'spin liquids' with a characteristic gap in the magnetic excitation spectrum. Among these are antiferromagnetic chains of integer quantum spins. Their generic feature are long-lived massive (gapped) excitations (magnons) that are subject to Zeeman splitting in external magnetic fields. The gap in one of the magnon branches decreases with field, driving a soft-mode quantum phase transition. The system then enters a qualitatively new high-field phase. The actual properties at high fields, particularly the spin dynamics, critically depend on the system under consideration. Recent neutron scattering studies of organometallic polymer crystals NDMAP (Haldane spin chains with anisotropy) and NTENP (dimerized S = 1 chains) revealed rich and unique physics.

Book excerpt: The theoretical and experimental study of low-dimensional systems has dominated much of modern condensed matter physics. Such systems present a range of different phenomena which are not observed in more isotropic, three-dimensional materials. This thesis constitutes the study of the excitations of two types of low-dimensional system: the magnetic excitations in the one-dimensional S = 1/2 antiferromagnetic chain compound Sr2CuO3 as studied using inelastic neutron scattering, and the phonons in quasi-two-dimensional graphite intercalation compounds CaC6 and BaC6 studied using inelastic X-ray scattering. Initially an introduction to the vast field of low-dimensional systems is provided, followed by a description of the neutron and X-ray scattering technique. Spinon excitations in Sr2CuO3 have been measured up to ≈ 600 meV, and are found to be well-described by the Heisenberg model. A new version of the magnetic form factor for Cu2+ in Sr2CuO3 provides an explanation for the considerable reduction in the measured inelastic neutron scattering intensity, which may have significant consequences for past and future work on other related materials. The phonons in superconducting CaC6 (Tc = 11.5 K) are found to be in reasonable agreement with Density Functional Perturbation Theory calculations, but the measured dispersions in non-superconducting BaC6 are significantly different to those predicted. No direct evidence for electron-phonon coupling is found in either compound. It is concluded that the X-ray data supports the validity of the theoretical description of CaC6, but the use of significantly inaccurate lattice parameters for BaC6 in the calculation may provide an explanation of the poor agreement in this case.

Book excerpt: The study of quantum magnets in two-dimensional systems is a forefront field in both materials science and condensed matter physics research. Such materials not only provide rich platforms for potential applications of novel materials but also further our understanding of basic physics. Neutron and x-ray scattering are powerful tools to explore the magnetic and charge correlations in these materials. This thesis describes the experimental investigation of two model systems in bulk crystalline form, one with a two-dimensional kagome lattice and one with a two-dimensional square lattice, both consisting of Cu2+ ions with spin-1/2. Strong quantum fluctuations give competing ground states or phases in both systems. Recently, barlowite Cu4(OH)6FBr has attracted much attention as the parent compound of a new kagome quantum spin liquid candidate. Our new synthesis method produced large single crystals of a new variant of barlowite, which has a higher symmetry space group compared to the previously reported one. Our elastic magnetic neutron scattering measurements reveal that the magnetic ground state of the new high-symmetry barlowite at low temperatures has a special pinwheel q = 0 magnetic order. In the intermediate temperatures, our numerical calculations and inelastic neutron scattering indicate that the kagome spins are in a potential pinwheel valence bond crystal state. Both of the two ground states are in close proximity to the long-sought quantum spin liquid state. The second part of my thesis is focused on the spin and charge correlations in high-Tc cuprate superconductors. Cuprate materials display intriguing physical phenomena due to the coexistence of various phases, which may interact with the superconductivity. The La-based family is a canonical example where both the spin and charge correlations could form "stripes". Magnetic neutron scattering reveals a rather surprising feature of the spin stripes in the model material La1.88Sr0.12CuO4: regardless of whether they are static or fluctuating, these stripes are always tilted from the high-symmetry direction of underlying lattices. Comparison with numerical simulations reveals the important role of the next-nearest neighbor electron hopping. Resonant soft x-ray scattering measurements offer important information about the charge order in another cuprate material stage-6 O-doped La2CuO4+y. By tuning both temperature and the dopant disorder level, we clearly observe two types of charge orders with distinct correlation lengths and behaviors at low temperatures. A coherent picture based on microscopic phase separation is proposed to explain the relationship between charge and spin orders with superconductivity in these materials.
