Book excerpt: Ultrasonic irradiation of approx. 25 w/sq cm at 20 kc may increase the critical resolved shear stress by a factor of 4 in 99.999% pure aluminium single crystals. This acoustic hardening is accompanied by a yield-point phenomenon, which, in its graphical appearance, resembles effects by neutron irradiation with no sound applied. Hardening by ultrasound and by neutron irradiation are compared, and effects of the superposition of fast neutrons and intense ultrasound in aluminium single crystals having diameters between 0.6 and 1.5 mm are presented. Increases were found to amount to as much as a factor of 14 in the critical resolved shear stress of these crystals compared to untreated samples. Simultaneously, the electric resistivity increased with combined treatment by 3.2 times over untreated samples. The results from these investigations are discussed in the light of present theories of neutron and acoustic radiation damage. (Author).

Book excerpt: We We have investigated the effect of successive neutron irradiation up to a fluence of approximately 2 x 10/sup 19/ n/cm/sup 2/, by measurements of heat capacity, susceptibility, resistivity, acoustic velocity and neutron diffraction in a single crystal V/sub 3/Si. We find that for low level doses (phi t greater than or equal to 3.5 x 10/sup 18/ n/cm/sup 2/) (a) the structural transformation is very sensitive, whereas the suerconducting transition temperature, T/sub c/, is hardly affected, and (b) except for low temperature heat capacity, most of the other measurements show very little change. For the highest fluence of 2 x 10/sup 19/ n/cm/sup 2/ used to date, the T/sub c/ dropped to 7.5 K with large changes in the linear heat capacity coefficient, magnetic susceptibility and sound velocity. These results are discussed briefly in this paper.
