Book excerpt: The standard model (SM) of particle physics has been a very successful theory for decades; however, several features remain unexplained. One such feature is the mechanism of electro-weak symmetry- breaking. The Higgs mechanism is postulated as part of the SM to give us the masses of the W± and the Z0 bosons in a manner consistent with unitarity. The Higgs boson is a consequence of the mechanism currently used. It is massive, and has the quantum numbers of the vacuum; i.e. it is a scalar. Also, the pattern of fermion (quark and lepton) masses is yet to be understood. Technicolor introduces a new force and particles (techniquarks and technileptons), which can break electroweak symmetry and generate the vector boson masses without introducing fundamental scalars. Along with some necessary extensions to the theory, technicolor provides the known fermion masses, and it also predicts many new "techni-mesons."1 Previous searches for various technicolor channels have been performed throughout the high-energy physics community at CERN on the L3 and DELPHI Experiments, and at Fermilab on the CDF and DØ Experiments.2 At the DØ experiment, we use neural networks to search for the lightest techni-mesons in a sample of [gamma]bb̄ data at the Tevatron. They are the techni-[Omega] ([Omega]T) and its mass-degenerate techni-p (p0[Subscript T]), which decay to a [gamma] and a techni-pion ([Pi subscript T / Piʹ subscript T]). For the technicolor models considered, the Pi[Subscrip T]/Piʹ subscript T] decays predominantly to bb̄. This analysis searches for [Omega subscript T]/P0[Subscript T production using many Monte Carlo signal samples on the M([Omega Subscript T]) VS. M([Pi subscript T]) mass plane. No evidence was found for the production of neutral technicolor particles in this channel, and 95% confidence level upper limits on cross-section x branching ratio ([Sigma] x BR) are computed.

We find that the previously observed universal transverse mass(mathrm mT \equiv\sqrt mathrm p_T 2+\mathrm m2) scaling of hadronproduction in p+p collisions seems to break down at higher \mt and thatthere is a difference in the shape of the \mt spectrum between baryonsand mesons. We observe mid-rapidity anti-baryon to baryon ratios nearunity for Lambda and Xi baryons and no dependence of the ratio ontransverse momentum, indicating that our data do not yet reach thequark-jet dominated region. We show the dependence of the mean transversemomentum (\mpt) on measured charged particle multiplicity and on particlemass and infer that these trends are consistent with gluon-jet dominatedparticle production. The data are compared to previous measurements fromCERN-SPS, ISR and FNAL experiments and to Leading Order (LO) and Next toLeading order (NLO) string fragmentation model predictions. We infer fromthese comparisons that the spectral shapes and particle yields from $p+p$collisions at RHIC energies have large contributions from gluon jetsrather than quark jets.

Book excerpt: Data are presented for the first time on exclusive Pomeron-Pomeron interactions which produce a neutral strange and neutral antistrange particle pair in a central system X. In this paper, the system, X, is identified as one of the following neutral combinations; K{sub s}°K{sub s}°, K{sub s}°K{sup {plus minus}}[pi]{sup {minus plus}}, [Lambda]°{bar [Lambda]}°, [Lambda]°{bar [Lambda]}°*. These data were obtained in proton-proton collisions at √s = 62 GeV at the CERN ISR. The triggering systems used to obtain these data are described, followed by a description of the data. The central system mass distributions are presented along with differential mass cross section estimates. A broad enhancement is seen in the K{sub s}°K{sub s}° system at a mass of 1.2 GeV, and is likely to have the quantum numbers J{sup PC} = 0{sup ++}. Total cross section estimates of 1.3 {plus minus} .64 [mu]b in the K2°K{sub s}° system, . 44 {plus minus} .14 [mu]b in the K{sub s}°K{sup {plus minus}}[pi]{sup {minus plus}} system, .20 {plus minus} .14 [mu]b in the {Lambda}°{bar {Lambda}}° system, and .13 {plus minus} .06 [mu]b in the {Lambda}°{bar {Lambda}}°* system are obtained.
