Book excerpt: This title enables readers to understand how to undertake appropriate neurophysiological investigations in the critical care setting. The book addresses the scientific principles (biological and technological), recording techniques, the development of electrical potentials in normal subjects, and the ways these are disturbed by trauma, surgery and disease. The impact of digital technologies and the possibilities of quantification, statistical treatment and advanced signal processing techniques have enabled practitioners to work to more rigorous scientific standards. The increasing availability of such tools in daily clinical work means that patients can now benefit from investigations of known specificity and sensitivity.

This book was released on 2010-10-28 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intraoperative neurophysiologic monitoring has shown a steady increase in use for surgeries in which neural structures may be at risk of injury. Some of the surgical techniques used carry inherent risks, and these risks have changed the way in which neurophysiologic monitoring has impacted patient safety and quality of care during surgical procedures. It is therefore crucial that those performing and interpreting intraoperative neurophysiologic monitoring are adequately trained. This book is a comprehensive guide to the current practice of intraoperative neurophysiology with chapters on various modalities and clinical uses. Separate chapters devoted to anesthesia, operating room environment, special considerations in pediatrics and the interpretation and reporting of neurophysiologic data are useful and complementary. Questions and detailed answers on the topics covered can be found on the accompanying website for study review. This book will be useful to the trainee as well as the neurophysiologist already in practice.

Book excerpt: The third edition of this classic text again provides practical, comprehensive coverage of the anatomical and physiological basis for intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring. Written by a leading authority in the field, Dr. Aage Moller has updated this important title to again offer all the leading-edge knowledge needed to perform electrophysiological recordings in the operating room, to interpret the results, and to present the results to the surgeon. The field known as "intraoperative monitoring" has expanded rapidly to cover other uses of neurophysiology and electrophysiologic recordings during surgical operations that affect the brain, spinal cord, and other parts of the nervous system. These new areas are covered in this new edition. To better represent the content of the book and the field as it now stands, many of the chapters have been revised and new material has been added. While the general organization of the book is maintained, chapters such as monitoring of motor systems have been revised and extended with new material, including more detailed description of the anatomy and physiology of motor systems and new information about intraoperative monitoring.

Book excerpt: The book discusses the application of evoked potentials recording in comatose patients admitted to Intensive Care Units and in patients undergoing surgical procedures that require direct monitoring of central nervous system function. In particular, it addresses patients undergoing neurosurgical operations, such as posterior fossa surgery, operative treatment of intracranial aneurysms, spinal cord surgery, cerebrovascular surgery, and operations on the descending aorta. Evoked potentials have been widely employed in neurology since the computer-assisted averaging technique became readily accessible to neurologists. More recent applications are discussed in this book. These require a different approach for monitoring the unconscious patient, often in a rapidly changing clinical situation. Applications of the different stimulus modalities are discussed in relation to the clinical situation of individual patients. SEPs and BAEPs find the widest application in the operating theatre and in evaluating comatose patients.

In addition, continuous recording of intracranial pressure has proved to provide infomation useful for critical care of the patient with severe brain damage. It is, however, difficult to assess neurochemical and/or metabolic environments of the brain with these conventional neuromoni toring techniques. Information regarding these changes, if available on a real-time basis, is undoubtedly useful for patient care. Many important developments in bedside techniques to monitor these changes have been achieved during the last few years. It was the consensus of the editors that a symposium to exchange knowledge concerning recent advances in such techniques would be valuable. With this background, the First International Symposium of Neuro chemical Monitoring in ICU held May 20-21, 1994, in Tokyo, Japan. It was not the intention of the organizers that this symposium should survey the whole field of neuromonitoring in ICU. The symposium was thus focused on clinical application of microdialysis, jugular venous oximetry, and near infrared spectroscopy, which currently appear to be the most promising techniques for monitoring neurochemical and metabolic changes in the brain in a clinical setting. We termed these techniques collectively as neuro chemical monitoring, contrasting them with neurophysiological monitoring in ICU. The concept that has motivated this symposium was to provide an opportunity to exchange up-to-date summaries on issues currently debated for these techniques. This volume is based on the papers presented at the symposium.

Book excerpt: This widely praised, first-of-its-kind book has been thoroughly updated, expanded, and enriched with extensive new case material, illustrations, and link-outs to multimedia, practice guidelines, and more. Written and edited by outstanding world experts, this was the first and remains the leading single-source volume on intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring (IOM). It is aimed at graduate students and trainees, as well as members of the operative team, including anesthesiologists, technologists, neurophysiologists, surgeons, and nurses. Now commonplace in procedures that place the nervous system at risk, such as orthopedics, neurosurgery, otologic surgery, vascular surgery, and others, effective IOM requires an unusually high degree of coordination among members of the operative team. The purpose of the book is to help students, trainees, and team members acquire a better understanding of one another’s roles and thereby to improve the quality of care and patient safety. From the reviews of the First Edition: “A welcome addition to reference works devoted to the expanding field of nervous system monitoring in the intraoperative period... will serve as a useful guide for many different health care professionals and particularly for anesthesiologists involved with this monitoring modality...An excellent reference...[and] a helpful guide both to the novice and to the developing expert in this field.” ‐‐Canadian Journal of Anesthesia “Impressive... [The book] is well written, indexed, and illustrated...The chapters are all extensively referenced. It is also very good value at the price....I would recommend this book to all residents and especially to all neuroanesthesiologists. It will make a worthwhile addition to their library.” ‐‐Journal of Neurosurgical Anesthesiology
