Book Synopsis The Rush to German Unity by : Konrad H. Jarausch
Download or read book The Rush to German Unity written by Konrad H. Jarausch and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1994-02-24 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The bringing down of the Berlin Wall is one of the most vivid images and historic events of the late twentieth century. The reunification of Germany has transformed the face of Europe. In one stunning year, two separate states with clashing ideologies, hostile armies, competing economies, and incompatible social systems merged into one. The speed and extent of the reunification was so great that many people are still trying to understand the events. Initial elation has given way to the realities and problems posed in reuniting two such different systems. The Rush to German Unity presents a clear historical reconstruction of the confusing events. It focuses on the dramatic experiences of the East German people but also explores the decisions of the West German elite. Konrad H. Jarausch draws on the rich sources produced by the collapse of the GDR and on the public debate in the FRG. Beginning with vivid media images, the text probes the background of a problem, traces its treatment and resolution and then reflects on its implications. Combining an insider's insights with an outsider's detachment, the interpretation balances the celebratory and the catastrophic views. The unification process was democratic, peaceful and negotiated. But the merger was also bureaucratic, capitalistic and one-sided. Popular pressures and political manipulation combined to create a rush to unity that threatened to escape control. The revolution moved from a civic rising to a national movement and ended up as reconstruction from the outside. An ideal source for general readers and students, The Rush to German Unity explores whether solving the old German problem has merely created new difficulties.

This book was released on 2020 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pointing at ambivalences and inconsistencies, contradictory expectations, nationalistic and pragmatic points of view, this study shows parts of the becoming, being and remaining (or not) Danish in Germany. Using qualitative methods and a constructivist approach, Levke Bittlinger examines questions of minority- and nationhood with regard to actors and the main institutions within the Danish minority in the Southern Schleswig region. The research ranges from the backgrounds of people becoming Danish in the postwar time to today’s parents sending their children to Danish institutions for social and material matters. The study reaches from the analysis of the role of the Danish school system, the cultural association including their expectations on new Danish people concerning their integration into the minority to the importance of symbols, practices and historical myths for constructing a minority belonging.
Book Synopsis Konturen der neuen Welt(un)ordnung by : Georg Kohler
Download or read book Konturen der neuen Welt(un)ordnung written by Georg Kohler and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2003 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The institutional network of law and state power peculiar to sovereign national states is in danger of disintegrating in the face of economic globalisation - such is the conclusion of numerous diagnoses of the present condition. At the same time, recent publications articulate the hope that supranational institutions will form which will be able to guarantee the rule of law across national boundaries. What is certain is that globalisation brings about new insecurities, which place new demands on national and international legal systems. Working from a philosophical or legal perspective, the individual papers examine the transformation of sovereignty, tendencies towards international systems of law, the criteria for global social justice, and the development of supranational forms of constitution.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Witness of Phenomenon articulates a fresh examination of the German Group Zero-Heinz Mack, Otto Piene, and Günter Uecker-and other new tendency artists, who rejected painting and introduced new art media in postwar Europe. Group ZERO evolved into a network across Europe- Amsterdam, Milan, Paris, and Zagreb. This pan-European affiliation of artists generated a continuous stream of innovative artistic statements through the 1960s, incorporating non-traditional materials and new technologies to create kinetic art, light installations, performances, immersive multimedia installations, monumental land art, and the communication media of video and television. They transformed the visual arts from the inanimate objet d'art to a sensory experience by adopting the ascendant philosophy of Phenomenology as their conceptual foundation. Drawing from a decade of research on unpublished archives of the artists and critics of this period, this publication positions Group ZERO as a catalytic art moment in the transition from modern to contemporary art.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Well before the far-right resurgence that has most recently transformed European politics, Austria’s 1999 parliamentary elections surprised the world with the unexpected success of the Freedom Party of Austria and its charismatic leader, Jörg Haider. The party’s perceived xenophobia, isolationism, and unabashed nationalism in turn inspired a massive protest movement that expressed opposition not only through street protests but also in novels, plays, films, and music. Through careful readings of this varied cultural output, The Art of Resistance traces the aesthetic styles and strategies deployed during this time, providing critical context for understanding modern Austrian history as well as the European protest movements of today.
