Book excerpt: Landscape architecture is a discipline which hovers between art and science, treading the fine line between invention and remembrance, ecology and abstraction, daring to be modern whilst mindful of tradition. This book attempts to grasp the state of affairs and develop new perspectives for landscape architecture. It takes as its starting point exemplary projects which have been realised over the last ten years mainly in Germany, but also in other countries like Switzerland and Saudi Arabia. In fundamental essays, discerning statements, in-depth projects documentations the issues which are at the heart of landscape architecture, open space design and landscape planning are explored. In times when European integration is increasing, agriculture is changing direction, sustainability is an issue and the demands on public space are growing, this publication provides a platform for the debate on landscape architecture. Lavishly illustrated and attractively designed, the book succeeds in communicating the visual fascination which lies in designing modern gardens, parks and landscapes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Well-being is now firmly established as an overarching theme of key concern to all professionals that work, manage or design the environment. However, well-being is a complex multi-dimensional issue rooted in the ways that we encounter, perceive and interpret the environment. No single discipline can claim to have sufficient knowledge to fully explain the types of interactions that occur, therefore there is a need to draw together a wide range of professions who are exploring the consequences of their actions upon the well-being of individuals and communities. This edited work addresses the above, consisting of a collection of studies which embrace different aspects of environment, landscape and well-being to consider current approaches to well-being research and practice that fall outside the traditional concepts of well-being as part of medical research, making links with architecture, landscape design, environmental perception, social interaction and environmental sustainability. The contributors originally presented at the international conference, ‘Well-Being 2011’ jointly hosted by Birmingham City University and the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA); the chapters have been developed to present a coherent series of themes reviewing a wide range of literature, presenting case studies appropriate to diverse audiences.

Der Band regt zur Fortschreibung an.Mit Beiträgen von: Gerd Aufmkolk, Werner Durth, Hans Jörg Duvigneau, Johannes Dziadek, Inken Formann, Anette Freytag, Christophe Girot, Gert Gröning, Stephanie Hennecke, Almut Jirku, Karsten Jørgensen, Peter Kees, Albert Kirchengast, Kaspar Klaffke, Thomas Kluge, Reinhard Komar, Stephanie Krebs, Hansjörg Küster, Bernard Lassus, Elisabeth Merk, Sarah Michaelis, Günter Nagel, Bettina Oppermann, Cord Panning, Martin Prominski, Florian Rüger, Sören Schöbel-Rutschmann, Hille von Seggern, Christiane Sörensen, Johannes Stoffler, Sigrid Thielking, Donata Valentien, Udo Weilacher, James L. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: City by Landscape documents the work of a landscape architect active in the interface between urban planning, open space planning and architecture. For many years Rainer Schmidt Landschaftsarchitekten + Stadtplaner have been among the leading offices in the fields of landscape and urban planning; the projects are also increasingly being realized internationally, above all in North Africa, the Middle East and China. The company’s overriding objective is to find answers to the urban-planning problems of today, and to do so in the awareness that 21st century landscape architecture should be a ‘built’ reflection on how people deal with one another and with nature. The office puts these answers into practice as designs and strikes a successful balance between design, functions and feelings. The intelligent use of natural resources is of prime importance for the work of the office so as to maximize the ecological, economic and social impact of the projects. In various essays the book addresses the central topics in Schmidt’s work and documents some 40 selected projects including the highlight Business Towers in Munich, the park city Schwabing, the Congress Center Doha and the Great Mosque of Algiers.

Book excerpt: The more intensively we exploit the urban and rural landscape, the greater the demands we place on our environment and what it can provide. Demographic change, shrinking cities, urban expansion, climate change and the transition to renewable energy sources are confronting us with challenges of ever greater magnitude. Solar fields and bio-energy crops are changing the face of the landscape and new traffic and energy infrastructure criss-crosses the countryside. Meanwhile, vast efforts are being made to adapt existing infrastructure to meet changing demands. In the process, it has once again become clear that we must consider our use of natural resources not just from a local perspective but within a broader context. Green infrastructure strategies can take quite different forms, ranging from floodwater protection measures to the integration of traffic and energy systems and the development of urban green. The goal for society is to improve the diversity and resilience of our environment and to minimize the effects of climate change. In essays, interviews and profiles of the best realized projects from the past few years, Green Infrastructure examines the challenges and tasks facing contemporary landscape architecture and what it can achieve to address them. This book is published on the occasion of the awarding of the German Landscape Architecture Prize 2015.

Book excerpt: Ever since W.E.B. du Bois conceptualized slaves’ self-emancipation during the U.S. Civil War as a "general strike," the language of labor history has informed scholarly understandings of slavery. While the analogy of the plantation to the factory has its obvious limitations, historians have understood slaves and slaveholders as engaged in recognizable struggles over the speed of work, the ownership of time and expertise, and the informal rights and privileges that governed the labor process. However, an older materialist history rooted in marxist categories has not always succeeded in capturing the dynamics of racial dominance and human commodification at the heart of the American slave system. A "new history of capitalism" has offered one remedy, namely to embed slavery firmly within a capitalist mode of production whose investment in "free" labor was always more rhetorical than real. A different response may now be emerging through what scholars call "the new materialism"—an approach organized around human/non-human entanglements and drawing on recent theoretical work on things, networks, and assemblages. This talk considers the implications of this "new materialism" for the history of slavery, and by extension, for the field of labor history more generally.

Book excerpt: today, the name RKW Architektur + Städtebau evokes two hundred architects whose work never fails to convince. The reason does not lie in the narrowly defined architectural language of individual leaders of the firm. More than in any other firm, the various teams are given generous latitude for independent initiative. Thus, this documentation of the last ten years, with cross - references to the development of this unique partnership since 1950, doesn’t just present sixty - five structures and projects from an internationally sought - after firm. On the contrary, in its search for the secret of the firm’s success, it looks behind the scenes in numerous interviews and essays. The works considered range from the research facilities for AUDI, the new sciences campus of RWTH Aachen University, and the corporate headquarters of Vodafone, Debitel, and Arag to urban revitalization projects, residential buildings, schools, sports halls, railroad stations, city halls, banks, urban office buildings and shopping centers, and the stadium for the 2012 European Soccer Championship in Gdansk.
