Book Synopsis Ford–A Village in the West Highlands of Scotland by : John B. Stephenson
Download or read book Ford–A Village in the West Highlands of Scotland written by John B. Stephenson and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2021-12-14 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Highlands of Scotland, like the southern Appalachians of the United States, have long been a problem area in Great Britain, troubled with a fading economy and loss of population. Most books about the region, however, are popular volumes that romanticize a bygone way of life. This study of Ford, a village of some 160 people in western Argyllshire, thus fills a gap in the literature and provides a look at the present realities of Scottish life. Although the Highlands are by no means a homogeneous region, Ford in its size and makeup is perhaps a representative rural settlement. John Stephenson, who conducted extensive interviews in the village during 1981, focuses his study on the theme of survival, on whether this particular village shows signs of enduring as a community of people bound together by common interests and situations. Though necessarily tentative, his conclusions are optimistic. Ford has shown a recent increase in population, consisting almost entirely of newcomers, and though its residents have now a more varied background, they seem to have a sense of place, of belonging to the village. This book will provide new insights not only for those interested in life in the Highlands but also for all those interested in small communities in other parts of the world.

Book excerpt: The Goshenhoppen registers of baptisms, marriages, and deaths are the sacramental records of the Catholic mission at Goshenhoppen, now Bally, in Washington Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania. Beginning in 1741, the year the mission was founded, and extending, with some gaps, to 1819, these include sacraments administered at Goshenhoppen and outlying missions in southeastern Pennsylvania, particularly in the counties of Berks, Bucks, Northampton, Montgomery, Lehigh, and Lebanon, an area containing much of the early Germanic population of the state. Goshenhoppen's registers are believed to be not only the oldest extant Catholic church registers in Pennsylvania, but the oldest in existence of the original thirteen colonies Hence their overriding importance in Pennsylvania-German history and genealogy and the reason for their original publication, between 1886 and 1950, in the Records of the American Catholic Historical Society of Philadelphia. Taken as a whole, the Goshenhoppen registers contain entries relating to about 4,000 baptisms, marriages, and deaths, with references to about 15,000 individuals. Added to this work for the first time is a complete name index.

Book Synopsis Argyll Curiosities by : Marian Pallister
Download or read book Argyll Curiosities written by Marian Pallister and published by Casemate Publishers. This book was released on 2018-04-12 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author of Lost Argyll offers an illustrated journey through the local lore and hidden histories of this curious county in the southwest of Scotland. The great travelers of the 17th century used the word “curiosity” in reference to many different things. The label was equally applied to people, plants, legends, historical facts and geological certainties. In Argyll Curiosities, Scottish author Marian Pallister follows their example in a 21st century journey around Argyll and its islands. It is difficult to find an area of Argyll which is not curious in some way: archaeology, geography, geology and genealogy have all revealed the uniqueness of this western fringe of Scotland. Going beyond the curiosities that are easily found on any journey through the county, Pallister has looked extensively into places, people and events which are curiously layered, resulting in a book that is overflowing with enchanting revelations and local histories.
