In theater, Nero is above all the most complex and disturbing character in Jean Racine's tragedy Britannicus (1669); but he is also the absolute protagonist of many other texts that bear his name. A fortunate verse script by Pietro Cossa from 1872, A dramatic poem by Arrigo Boito published in 1901 and posthumously performed in 1924 at La Scala with music by the same author. A mocking parody by Ettore Petrolini performed in 1918 and adapted into a film by Alessandro Blasetti in 1930. A work by Mascagni performed at La Scala in 1935. Among the more recent works, one can mention 'Nerone è morto?' by the Hungarian Miklos Hubay, performed by the Stabile di Torino in 1974. By antonomasia, the name of the emperor has entered common language to indicate a cruel and ferocious person. In addition to these works, there is my Nero with the title: 'Nero, the Emperor Most Beloved by the Romans'. Focused on historical facts that demonstrate how, certainly, the people did not consider him cruel or ferocious.
