Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2011 in the subject Economics - Macro-economics, general, grade: Keine, Cologne University of Applied Sciences, language: English, abstract: The world is changing rapidly. In the last sixty years it has seen miraculous developments. Coming out of the ashes of World War II, Western Europe has established itself as the most stable region of the world. Totally destroyed Japan, having been the victim of the only atomic bomb in human history, which killed hundreds of thousands, has established itself as the strongest economy of Asia, and second only to the United States worldwide. We have seen the rise of South Korea, which had the equal per capita income as Mozambique in late fifties. Today South Korea stands as a developed country. We have seen the growth of China when Mao went. From Deng Xiaoping to Xiang Jemin to Hu Jintao, it kept its economy open and recently overtook Germany as the third largest economy of the world. China is on the way to become the second largest economy. India, from the early ninetees, took similar policy. India grew when the world economy was in downturn. The rise of BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India and China) countries has re-shaped the world order. Mexico proudly declares itself as a North American country today and no more intends to turn back to its old identity as a Central American country. The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) has been good for Mexican economy as they can sell their products in the United States and Canada now. Indonesia shares similar story. Even though it was runned by one of the terrible dictator of the world, Suharto, he brought liberal policies in the country encouraging Privatisation, Free Trade and more market liberalization. After the Asian financial crisis of 1997, people lost faith in him and finally toppled him. Growth was felt in other parts of the world as well. Emergence of computarized technologies, World Wide Web, digital technologies etc have reshaped the world. Nepal, however, did not change much. Even though it enjoyed the modern developments from other parts of the world, it could not establish itself as a country capable to adopt such changes. There are many things to blame. Ill adviced policies of the past, weak justice system, ineffective education policies, high corruption, nepotism etc are just handful of things. In this paper, I will point out some sectors which need immediate change in Nepal. I will recommend some policy advices and finally analyse some future scenarios in international level which have huge impact on Nepalese economics and politics.

Book excerpt: The government of Nepal has pursued policies intended to promote a modern market-oriented economy with the purpose of improving growth performance and prospects. Although the fiscal deficit remains sustainable, financed primarily by foreign aid, budget performance has reflected the prevailing weaknesses in overall fiscal policy implementation. Some progress has been made in the areas of price reform, privatization, and financial sector reform. However, weaknesses in the legislative framework, limited skilled labor, and inadequate basic infrastructures continue to impede private sectoral development.

Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2015 in the subject Economics - Case Scenarios, grade: Very good, University of Glasgow (Adam Smith Business School), course: Master of Science in Economic Development, language: English, abstract: This research uses time-series data to examine the impact of international remittance flow on economic growth and poverty reduction in Nepal. It applies the econometric model suggested by Ravallion (2001), Ravallion and Chen (1997) and Adam and Page (2005) for remittance and poverty and Quayyum et al (2008) for remittance and growth. Both micro and macro level impacts were considered. The regression results show that remittance flow is positively and significantly correlated with economic growth and poverty reduction in Nepalese context. The finding suggests that in the short run international remittance flow had positive contribution in economic growth and poverty reduction through investments in health, education and consumption. Remittance also contributed to relax credit constraints, especially for the poor and in macro level, helped to finance trade deficit, accumulate foreign exchange reserves and to reduce government debt. However, a deeper analysis of the last two decades shows that increased remittance flow has been the major cause of decline of tradable sector through „Dutch Disease‟ effects. Moreover, remittance contributed to higher inflation, eroded work habits and brought adverse social costs. Combined, the long term impact of remittance seems to be overwhelmingly negative in Nepal.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By looking at the link between trade liberalization and pro-poor growth in Nepal, this book explores how a developing and transition economy can attain higher and pro-poor growth along with the ongoing trend of globalization. The author develops a social accounting database for Nepal and applies it to quantify computable general equilibrium (CGE) model to investigate the trade-offs between growth and distribution that are associated with opening up the economy and deregulating it. The book presents a number of pragmatic scenarios that bring about the desired pro-poor growth effects in order to demonstrate possible outcomes for policy making. The research findings apply to other economies with similar macroeconomic structure to Nepal; those small economies with a dominant, traditional, and stagnant agriculture; fragile industrial base, weak and volatile external sector, and almost half of the population living below the poverty line. This book will be of considerable interest to students and scholars in the areas of development economics, political economy of policy reforms, and trade and poverty with special emphasis on South Asia.

Although the Nepalese economy performed well, growth has been hampered by weak infrastructure, low saving and investment rates, fiscal constraints, and a lack of absorptive capacity for boosting the needed public investment. Fiscal performance has been favorable, but progress in the area of structural reform was less encouraging. The report analyzes the recent macroeconomic developments, poverty, and environmental issues. The study also reviews the country's external and monetary developments, the fiscal situation, and structural issues.

Book excerpt: Political Economy of Social Change and Development in Nepal is an accessible contemporary political economic analysis of social change in Nepal. It considers whether and how Nepal's political economy might have been transformed since the 1950s while situating these changes in Nepal's modern history and its location in the global economic system. It assembles and builds on the scholarship on Nepal from a multidisciplinary and synoptic perspective. Focusing on local discourses, experiences and expectations of transformations, it draws our attention to how powerful historical processes are experienced and negotiated in Nepal and assess how these may, at the same time, produce ideas of equality, human rights and citizenship while also generating new forms of precarity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement in 2006 and Constituent Assembly elections in 2008 have paved the way for political and economic reform in Nepal. Indeed, the 2009 Investment Climate Assessment (ICA) shows that Nepal's private sector is starting to reap some dividend from the cessation of armed conflict in terms of employment generation, rebounding tourism, increased tax collection, as well as less complex business regulations and procedures to obtain permits. However, Nepal's private sector (already plagued with various market failures) continues to suffer from the consequences of a decade of armed conflict and civil unrest. Poor infrastructure, particularly for transportation and energy, inadequate labor skills and continuous labor unrest, as well as inefficient and unstable credit markets, exacerbate the damage that continued political instability has had on the investment climate. Together political instability and poor infrastructure pose the two greatest challenges to Nepal's investment climate and growth in the private sector. The effects of these challenges on business confidence and economic performance are visible and costly: productions costs are high, business operations and trade are often disrupted, and competitiveness is declining. These structural problems cause low levels of savings and investment resulting in low job creation, which lead millions of Nepalis to seek temporary employment abroad; resulting in remittance flows that are mainly channeled to consumption and asset bubbles. This inflates prices and increases costs to the productive job-creating sector, which loses competitiveness and export markets, prolonging the cycle of mediocre and jobless growth at home. In order for Nepal to kick-start private sector-led growth in Nepal, it has to leverage its potential particularly through strengthening trade with China and India, developing its hydropower resources, and adopting policies to target growth in key sectors such as tourism. Improving Nepal's investment climate and strengthening the private sector will require government initiative to solve many challenges as well as public-private dialogue and partnerships to tackle larger challenges to be addressed over the medium and long-term. The Nepal Investment Climate Assessment (ICA) assesses dimensions of the investment climate that shape the opportunities for investments, employment and growth of private firms and provides recommendations to support private sector development. The Nepal ICA is based on three main surveys: an Enterprise Survey, an Employee Survey, and a Survey of Informal Enterprises. The surveys capture perceptions of the main obstacles for enterprises and workers in key sectors of the economy such as services and manufacturing and provide in-depth data and analysis on issues such as employment, policies and regulations, regional trade, and performance. An advantage of the enterprise surveys is that similar surveys have been conducted in many other countries. This allows comparisons of data on the investment climate with countries in the region and similar countries from other regions. The findings and recommendations of this Nepal ICA will be of interest to the Nepalese government and policy makers, development partners, Nepalese business associations, and researchers on private sector development and investment climate issues in Nepal and the South Asia region.
