Book excerpt: Excerpt from Neogene Paleontology in the Northern Dominican Republic 18., The Superfamily Volutacea (in Part) (Mollusca, Gastropoda) Elsewhere the basal beds of the Neogene consist of the Bulla Conglomerate, resting unconformably upon the Mesozoic basement, and containing large granitic boulders that mark the Shoreline of the Late Miocene marine transgression. The Bulla Conglomerate rapidly grades upward into a marine facies known as the Cer cado Formation, which is clearly very shallow water, with smaller boulders mixed in among the beautifully preserved molluscan shells. The Family Muricidae (Mollusca, Gastropoda); 9. The Family Cardiidae (Mollusca, Bivalvia) From 1976 to 1983 my husband and I spent a total of seven months (in ten trips) collecting the magnificent Dominican fossils. Much of the locality data came from the Maury expedition, in which the field work was done by Axel Olsson and Karl Schmidt. AS Maury (1917, p. 167) Observed, their work involved wading up rivers, carrying heavy packs of fossils, sleeping in the roughest of shanties, and undergoing the greatest dis comforts. In addition to the natural discomforts, the party was harassed by rebels and ultimately had to flee the country for their lives. Considering the conditions under which they worked the amount of information and fossils they collected is amazing. A few years after their labors, political stability was again restored (for a time) and the new government invited the U. S. Geological Survey to come in and conduct a study of the country. This resulted in a comprehensive analysis of the geology (vaughan et al., with many fossil localities enumerated but only brief faunal lists to doc ument the stratigraphy. Nevertheless, the locality in formation proved to be a gold mine for our work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Based on approximately 25,000 specimens from the Miocene and Pliocene of the Cibao Valley, northern Dominican Republic, the bivalve family Propeamussiidae is represented by two genera and four species, including two new species, Cyclopecten acuminatus and C. zalaya; the family Pectinidae is represented by three subfamilies, six tribes, 18 genera, and 35 species. New taxa in the Pectinidae include six new genera ( Interchlamys , Chagrepecten , Gurabopecten , Paraleptopecten , Zamorapecten , and Antillipecten ), 15 new species ( Caribachlamys guayubinensis , C. jungi , Mimachlamys blowi , M. vokesorum , Palliolum ? cibaoense , Argopecten parathetidis , Chagrepecten paracactaceus , Gurabopecten uniplicatus , Lindapecten baitoaensis , L. paramuscosus , Euvola gurabensis , Zamorapecten maoensis , Antillipecten janicoensis , A. microlineatus , and A. quemadosensis) , one species in open nomenclature ( Paraleptopecten sp. a ), and one new subspecies ( Argopecten eccentricus lacabrensis ). In addition, a new name, Euvola jamaicensis , replaces the name E. barretti (Woodring, 1925). Lectotypes are designated for Cyclopecten guppyi (Dall, 1898) and Cryptopecten phrygium (Dall, 1886). Four of the genera (20%) and all but four of the species (90%) in the two families are extinct. Among the Pectinidae, 60% of the species but only 5% of the genera are endemic to the northern Dominican Republic. The high species endemism is possibly an artifact due to the absence in many other regions of precisely correlative strata as well as to differences in facies and sampling methods. Assemblages of the two families change composition going upward in stratigraphic sections measured along each major river, reflecting increasing depth of deposition, changing bottom conditions, and association with coral reefs or marine grasses and algae. Evolutionary changes within particular lineages help to resolve several previous biostratigraphic uncertainties and controversies, including the age of limestones on the Río Yaque del Norte and in the Guayubín area. Detailed study of these changes has also shed new light on the causes of dramatic faunal differences between stratigraphic sections on the Río Gurabo and Río Mao, separated by only 10 km.

Book excerpt: Holoplankton gastropod faunas from the northern Dominican Republic Neogene, contained in the collections of the Natural History Museum at Basel (Switzerland) comprise two species of Heteropoda: Atlanta cordiformis (Gabb, 1873 and Protatlanta rotundata (Gabb, 1873), and 17 euthecosomatous pteropods: Limacina (Striolimacina) imitans (Gabb, 1873), L. (Striolimacina) inflata (d'Orbigny, 1836), Limacina sp. indet., Creseis acicula (Rang, 1828), Hyalocylis striata (Rang, 1828), Styliola subula (Quoy and gaimard, 1827), Cuvierrina astesana (Rang, 1829)?. Cuvierina sp., Clio cuspidata (Bosc, 1802)?, C. pyramidata Linné. 1767 forma lanceolata (Lesuer, 1813). Clio sp., Cavolinia gypsorum (Bellardi, 1873), C. aff gypsorum, C. mexicana (Collins, 1934), C. cf. tridentata (Niebuhr, 1775), Diacria trispinosa (de Blainville, 1821) and Edithinella sp. Edithinella undulata (Gabb, 1873), recorded in the literature from the same area but not represented in the present collection, is included on the basis of the type material. The number of holoplanktonic gastropod species from the Dominican Republic is thus 20. The name Striolimacina is introduced to replace Planorbella Gabb, 1873a non Haldemann, 1843 (Mollusca). From the Baitoa Formation (Río Yaque del Norte section), of assumed late Early Miocene age, a single pteropod (Edithinella sp.) was recorded. The Late Miocene Cercado Formation (Río Gurabo: Globorotalia humerosa Zone. Río Cana: no biozone indicated) and some samples lacking lithostratigraphical data, of ? Late Miocene age (Río Mao) yeilded nine species, among which only Cavolinia gypsorum is indicative of a Late Miocene (Tortonian-Messinian) age. Other species are known only locally or have longer ranges. Specimens from the late Early Pliocene Gurabo Formation (Globorotalia margaritae Zone: Río Gurabo) and the Mao Adentro Limestone (G. maragaritae Zone: Río Cana), the Early to middle Pliocene Mao Formation (G. mararitae/miocenica Zone: Río Gurabo section), and a sample lacking lithostratigraphical data, of ?late Early Pliocene age (Río Yaque del Norte section) yielded 10 holoplanktonic mollusk species. So far as they could be identified to species these invariably belong to taxa ranging at least through the entire Pliocene, and still occur today.

The biology of several modern species has been throughly investigated due to their economic value as a human food resource. Unlike many gastropods, strombids undergo pseudo-determinate growth; they therefore present intriguing possibilities for investigation of size-related patterns of change. Unfortunately, they also display a wide degree of intraspecific morphologic variation, making reliable determination of species identity difficult. In this paper, we examine members of this family from the late Miocene and early Pliocene deposits of the Cibao Valley, located in the northwestern portion of the Dominican Republic on the Caribbean island of Hispaniola. After brief descriptions of the general geologic setting of the Cibao Valley and the biology of modern strombids, we delineate the observed geographic and stratigraphic ranges for species of Strombus and Lobatus in the Cibao Valley. At least 11 species of strombids have been reported from the Dominican Republic. Based on the high degree of intraspecific morphologic variation common in these genera and upon examination of individual specimens, we synonomize several older names and recognize only five species in two genera from the Cibao sequence: S. bifrons, S. proximus, L. haitensis, L. galliformis, and L. dominator. We describe some aspects of strombid paleoecology and summarize spatiotemporal patterns of distribution. Differences exist between modern strombid populations and our collections of Miocene Dominican ones; strombids of the Cibao Valley are in general smaller and appear to have occupied somewhat different habitats than those of their modern relatives.

Book excerpt: One hundred and forty-five species are reported from the Cercado, Gurabo and Mao formations of the Río Cana sections on the south flank of the Cibao Valley, northern Dominican Republic. Twenty-one species are new: Argilloecia wespa, Bythoceratina monocereos, Caribella geisteri, Cytheropteron (Aversovalva) bijuduvali, Vytheropteron (Cytheropteron) dominicanum, Cytheropteron (Cytheropteron) guraboense, Echinocythereis madremaestrae, Eucytherura fithianae, Munseyella jungi, Munseyella saundersi, Paracytheridea calcitrapa, Parakrithe alta, Pedicythere variabilis, Phlyctocythere vurva, Phylctocythere recta, Phyltocythere stricta, Proteoconcha? evai, Pterygocythereis Illinasi, Radimella ovata, Xestoleberis antillea and Xestoleberis duo. The uppermost Cercado Formation and the Gurabo and Mao formations belong to the Radimella confragosa Zone (upper Miocene-Pliocene). Below the Cercado Formation the lower part of this zone coincides with the upper part of the brackish-water Cyprideis pascagoulansis Zone (middle to upper Miocene). The two sections show increasing depth of deposition with decreasing age, the Río Cana sections farther west. Underlying beds in the Río Yaque del Norte sections near Santiago were deposited at greater depth than those of the Río Mao, Río Gurabo, and Río Cana sections farther west. Underlying beds in the Río Yaque sections (Arroyo López) carry a fauna that is similar to that of the amber sites on the south flank of the Cordillera Central and to that of the Anguilla Formation of the Lesser Antilles, which are believed to be of similar age (close to early-middle Miocene boundary).

Diameter is measured only for paired valves and is the maximum distance between two planes tangent to the outside of the right and left valves, paralleling the valve margins. Book excerpt: Multivariate statistical analyses are used to distinguish species in the genera Montastraea and Solenastrea through a continuous Neogene sequence (five Ma time interval) in the Cibao Valley of the northern Dominican Republic. Some older (by approximately 10 Ma) material from the same region also is included in the analyses. The material consists of approximately 280 colonies of Montrastraea (74 of which are measured) from a total of 59 localities, and 66 colonies of Solenastrea (15 of which are measured) from a total of 37 localities. Twelve additional colonies of Montastraea from the Vokes' collections of the same localities are also measured, and added to the data set. The material is first sorted into two genera on the basis of qualitative examination of septal structure, the structure of the columella and associated paliform lobes, and the texture of the coenosteum. Sixteen characters consisting of linear distances and counts are measured in transverse thin-sections of ten corallites per colony in Montastraea; ten similar characters are measured on the upper surface of ten calices per colony in Solenastrea. The data are analyzed using cluster and canonical discriminant analysis to group the colonies into clusters representing species. Seven species are so defined in Montastraea and two in Solenastrea. These groupings are then used statistically to reclassify type specimens for 12 of the 17 defined species of Montastraea and four of the seven described species of Solenastrea.
