Nein, meine Suppe ess’ ich nicht!“ Dieser berühmte Ausspruch des Suppenkaspars aus dem Jahre 1844 scheint dem unkundigen Leser erstmal nichts mitteilen zu wollen, außer der Tatsache, dass ein kleiner, molliger Junge womöglich aus Trotz oder Protest gegen die Eltern keine Lust hat, seine Suppe zu essen. Diese vermeintliche Oberflächlichkeit entpuppt sich bei näherer Betrachtung als Trugschluss, hat die Geschichte doch nach einheitlicher wissenschaftlicher Überzeugung eine tiefgründigere Thematik und offenbart bei näherer Betrachtung und bei Kenntnis des Tätigkeitsgebiets des Autors wohl eines der ersten Zeugnisse der Neuzeit für eine Essstörung. Zum Märchen „degradiert“, thematisiert sie erstmalig für die breite Öffentlichkeit ein bis dato weitgehend unbekanntes oder ignoriertes oder nicht ernst genommenes Krankheitsbild und macht es durch zahlreiche Kinderbücher publik. Der Autor des „Suppenkaspars“, Dr. Heinrich Hoffmann, lebte von 1809 bis 1894 und war Nervenarzt in Frankfurt in einer „Anstalt für Irre und Epileptiker“. Sein Gebiet war die Jugendpsychiatrie. Da er für seinen damals dreijährigen Sohn kein passendes Geschenk zu Weihnachten fand, entschloss er sich, ein Kinderbuch selbst zu verfassen und es ihm zu schenken. Der „Struwwelpeter“ war geboren, wenn auch vorerst noch unter einem anderen Titel. In dem Buch fand sich auch die Geschichte des Suppenkaspars wieder. Inhaltlich wurde darin zum einen die Erziehung des Bürgertums pointiert thematisiert, die bis dato nur auf eine Berufsausbildung denn eine Charakterbildung fixiert war, zum anderen griff Hoffmann ein Thema auf, das zur damaligen Zeit weiten Teilen der Bevölkerung völlig neu war: Die freiwillige Essensverweigerung! Durch die vorausgegangenen, jahrelangen Hungersnöte breiter Teile der Bevölkerung erschien ein vorsätzlicher Verzicht auf Nahrung ja geradezu absurd. Der Suppenkaspar ist wahrscheinlich das erste bekannte literarische Zeugnis eines Anorektikers, vielleicht sogar ein authentischer Fall aus der Praxis Hoffmanns.
