Download or read book Love Where You Live written by Shauna Pilgreen and published by Revell. This book was released on 2019-01-22 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite being part of one of the most mobile societies in history, it's easy for us to feel stuck where we are. Whether because of a recent move or because we're still in the exact same place we've been for years, many of us just aren't where we thought we'd be or doing what we thought we'd be doing. Sometimes we may wonder if God knows what he's doing. How can this be part of his plan? With enthusiasm and contagious joy, Shauna Pilgreen assures readers that, yes, God does have a plan and a purpose for them--right where they are. In fact, he sent them there. She invites readers to "live sent," showing them how to see their surroundings with fresh eyes and renewed energy. Weaving her own remarkable story with biblical habits readers can incorporate into their daily routines, Pilgreen equips us to reach out into our communities with God's love, knowing that our efforts are never in vain.

Book Synopsis Friends and Neighbors by : T. S. Arthur
Download or read book Friends and Neighbors written by T. S. Arthur and published by Book Jungle. This book was released on 2008 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The value of friendship and neighborliness are as important in the rush and fast paced life of the 21st century as they were in the mid 19th century. Perhaps more important as we are ever increasingly separated by the technology we so value. Friends and Neighbors was edited by T S Arthur in 1856. Arthur has complied a group of prose and poetry for the purpose of reminding his readers about the value of friendship and the benefits of being a good neighbor. The Preface begins. "If we would only bring ourselves to look at the subjects that surround as in their true flight, we should see beauty where now appears deformity, and listen to harmony where we hear nothing but discord. To be sure there is a great deal of vexation and anxiety in the world; we cannot sail upon a summer sea for ever; yet if we preserve a calm eye and a steady hand, we can so trim our sails and manage our helm, as to avoid the quicksands, and weather the storms that threaten shipwreck. We are members of one great family; we are travelling the same road, and shall arrive at the same goal. We breathe the same air, are subject to the same bounty, and we shall, each lie down upon the bosom of our common mother. It is not becoming, then, that brother should hate brother; it is not proper that friend should deceive friend; it is not right that neighbour should deceive neighbour."
Book Synopsis Alien Neighbors, Foreign Friends by : Charlotte Brooks
Download or read book Alien Neighbors, Foreign Friends written by Charlotte Brooks and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2009-08-01 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between the early 1900s and the late 1950s, the attitudes of white Californians toward their Asian American neighbors evolved from outright hostility to relative acceptance. Charlotte Brooks examines this transformation through the lens of California’s urban housing markets, arguing that the perceived foreignness of Asian Americans, which initially stranded them in segregated areas, eventually facilitated their integration into neighborhoods that rejected other minorities. Against the backdrop of cold war efforts to win Asian hearts and minds, whites who saw little difference between Asians and Asian Americans increasingly advocated the latter group’s access to middle-class life and the residential areas that went with it. But as they transformed Asian Americans into a “model minority,” whites purposefully ignored the long backstory of Chinese and Japanese Americans’ early and largely failed attempts to participate in public and private housing programs. As Brooks tells this multifaceted story, she draws on a broad range of sources in multiple languages, giving voice to an array of community leaders, journalists, activists, and homeowners—and insightfully conveying the complexity of racialized housing in a multiracial society.
Download or read book Italian Neighbors written by Tim Parks and published by Grove/Atlantic, Inc.. This book was released on 2015-01-07 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New York Times Notable Book of the Year: A deliciously entertaining account of expatriate life in a small village just outside Verona, Italy. Tim Parks is anything but a gentleman in Verona. So after ten years of living with his Italian wife, Rita, in a typical provincial Italian neighborhood, the novelist found that he had inadvertently collected a gallery full of splendid characters. In this wittily observed account, Parks introduces readers to his home town, with a statue of the Virgin at one end of the street, a derelict bottle factory at the other, and a wealth of exotic flora and fauna in between. Via Colombare, the village’s main street, offers an exemplary hodgepodge of all that is new and old in the bel paese, a point of collision between invading suburbia and diehard peasant tradition. It is a world of creeping vines, stuccoed walls, shotguns, security cameras, hypochondria, and expensive sports cars. More than a mere travelogue, Italian Neighbors is a vivid portrait of the real Italy and a compelling story of how even the most foreign people and places gradually assume the familiarity of home. “One of the most delightful travelogues imaginable . . . so vivid, so packed with delectable details.” —Los Angeles Times Book Review

Book Synopsis Friends, Neighbours, Sinners by : Carys Brown
Download or read book Friends, Neighbours, Sinners written by Carys Brown and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-08-04 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Friends, Neighbours, Sinners demonstrates the fundamental ways in which religious difference shaped English society in the first half of the eighteenth century. By examining the social subtleties of interactions between people of differing beliefs, and how they were mediated through languages and behaviours common to the long eighteenth century, Carys Brown examines the graduated layers of religious exclusivity that influenced everyday existence. By doing so, the book points towards a new approach to the social and cultural history of the eighteenth century, one that acknowledges the integral role of the dynamics of religious difference in key aspects of eighteenth-century life. This book therefore proposes not just to add to current understanding of religious coexistence in this period, but to shift our ways of thinking about the construction of social discourses, parish politics, and cultural spaces in eighteenth-century England.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever feel like we’re just fumbling through the LGBT conversation, always asking but never really finding answers to questions like: What does it look like to be friends with my lesbian neighbors? How should I love my gay child and his partner? What if I’m invited to a same-sex wedding? What did Jesus say—and not say—about homosexuality? What is the role of the church in the same-sex debate? We don’t have to fumble. While the questions are hard, answers can be had. Just ask Glenn Stanton. Stanton, of Focus on the Family, travels widely meeting with and debating LGBT advocates across the country. In doing so he has had the privilege of becoming friends with a number of them. He says, "We disagree on certain convictions, but we still admire and esteem one another . . . Since when was it decided that people who see the world in polar opposite ways can't be friends?" He shares his personal journey building bridges with the LGBT community and offers candid insights on hard questions. In Loving My (LGBT) Neighbor, Glenn Stanton shows us how to speak the truth in love on this difficult but important issue.
