Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1867, this book is a collection of songs of African-American slaves. A few of the songs were written after the emancipation, but all were inspired by slavery. The wild, sad strains tell, as the sufferers themselves could, of crushed hopes, keen sorrow, and a dull, daily misery, which covered them as hopelessly as the fog from the rice swamps. On the other hand, the words breathe a trusting faith in the life after, to which their eyes seem constantly turned.

Book excerpt: For over 200 years in African-American churches throughout the country, gospel and spiritual music have offered solace and been a source of celebration, leaving a mark not only on the Christian world, but on popular music as well. Ev'ry Time I Feel the Spirit contains the lyrics and music of 101 of the most widely known and cherished of these pieces, ranging from heartring spirituals sung during slave times (Steal Away; Swing Low, Sweet Chariot) to songs of unity from the civil rights movement and contemporary times (We Shall Overcome, I'll Fly Away). The book also presents a biography of each composer and the history of the evolution of each song, examining the role it played in enabling African-Americans to develop the strength to carry on in the face of adversity. An important historical document as well as an inspirational gift, the book captures the rich connections between song and experience as no other volume does.

Wade in the Water celebrates these spirituals as an art form and as unique and powerful cultural expression. For those with little knowledge of the tradition, it provides a wealth of information. For those who know and love the spirituals, it offers a fresh prespective and an invitation to deeper understanding, spiritual transformation, and social renewal. The book comes with a CD of some of the spirituals covered in the book.

This book was released on 1986 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Afro-american still experiences an uncomfortable situation within American society. The reason is that he still bears the scars of slavery, which had stripped him of his human dignity. In spite of the emancipation proclamation, he still sends signals of heartburn and frustration. Indeed, at the bank of American justice, his account has a permanent overdraft economically, politically and socially. The Church managed to rehabilitate him both as a human being and as a beneficiary of salvation by Jesus Chrsit. The Church, then, offered the Negro the setting of the composition and the development of both negro spirituals and gospel songs. Although these were previously intended for the praise and the glorification of God, the Negro has however been using both categories of music to protest against being enslaved, to make suggestions for a social change in equity and harmony. While singing these songs, the afroamerican found himself a talented artist who had to exploit his musicla genius far beyond the Church. The products of this exploitation and their commercialization helped the Negro gain respect and recognition as an artist. He discovered that he was somebody. A discussion about the importance of negro spirituals and gospel songs in the Afro-american's life is highlighting the important role played by both negro spirituals and gospel songs in the rehabilitation of the Negro as a human being, and the integration of the Afro-american into American society as a citizen.
