Book excerpt: Bridgette is the mother of adult children whose problems she has taken on as her own, for far too long. As she finally allows herself to stop making their problems hers, she embraces the present and looks forward to finding new interests and doing new things. What she has no way of knowing, is that the timing is perfect for a culminating event dating back hundreds of years. The catalyst for this is an actor, Hunter Stephens. After seeing the latest Hunter movie with a friend, Bridgette confesses to her friend, about the growing obsession she has to learn all she can about Hunter. Her friend suggests there could be an ancestral or spiritual connection that needs to be explored. Perhaps their paths crossed during another lifetime. Over the next two years, Bridgette and her friend put together the pieces of the puzzle. Someone or something from the past is manipulating Bridgette to continue her fascination with Hunter, to accomplish a goal. But what is the goal? When Bridgette learns that she and Hunter might be linked by a present from the past that goes back to Mary, Queen of Scots, she is lead down a mysterious path to find the truth about the gift and, determine whether her destiny is linked, somehow, to Hunter Stephens. In this fascinating tale, a womans inexplicable fascination with a movie actor takes her on a journey to find the truth. Could they be connected through their ancestry?

Book excerpt: Through a discussion of Walter Benjamin, Sigmund Freud, Mieke Bal and others, author Michaela Grobbel focuses on the work three women authors as types of performance which lead to re-presentations of memory. These women writers foreground the present but also critically demonstrate the complex relationship of the present to the past. Grobbel's work is a critical addition to any discussion of feminism, memory and literary modernism.

Book excerpt: A Seminary Co-op Notable Book of 2016 William James is often considered a scientist compromised by his advocacy of mysticism and parapsychology. Jonathan Bricklin argues James can also be viewed as a mystic compromised by his commitment to common sense. James wanted to believe in will, self, and time, but his deepest insights suggested otherwise. "Is consciousness already there waiting to be uncovered and is it a veridical revelation of reality?" James asked shortly before his death in 1910. A century after his death, research from neuroscience, physics, psychology, and parapsychology is making the case, both theoretically and experimentally, that answers James's question in the affirmative. By separating what James passionately wanted to believe, based on common sense, from what his insights and researches led him to believe, Bricklin shows how James himself laid the groundwork for this more challenging view of existence. The non-reality of will, self, and time is consistent with James's psychology of volition, his epistemology of self, and his belief that Newtonian, objective, even-flowing time does not exist.

Book excerpt: "I really do not know how to greet this man, so I simply extend my hand. He takes it and then pulls me into an embrace that lasts several long moments. As my head rests against his jacket I find myself weeping, and through that sound, I hear the steady beat of Maya's heart in his chest," writes Eleanor Vincent in this moving story about love, loss, and renewal. Maya, Eleanor's elder daughter, was a high-spirited and gifted young woman. At age nineteen, she mounted a horse bareback on a dare, and in a crushing cantilever fall, was left in a coma from which she never recovered. Eleanor's life was turned upside down as she struggled to make the painful decision about Maya's fate. Ultimately, Eleanor chose to donate Maya's organs. Maya's heart was given to a man with a young family who needed a new heart to live. As time went by, Eleanor contacted and struck up a friendship with the heart recipient family. Swimming with Maya is about the unique and complicated relationship between mothers and daughters. It also explores how through organ donation, a relationship can continue to exist beyond the grave, changing many lives. In vivid language, Eleanor Vincent illuminates how courage, radical generosity, and letting go can heal a devastating loss. Book jacket.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Pharoahs were masters of the Nile: they had a detailed understanding of the ways of the river. Modern Egyptians see themselves as heirs to this tradition, and as owners of the Nile waters. In the 1960's, Egypt decided to protect its increasingly-populated Nile valley from the ravages of annual flooding by building a dam. A relatively small dam in the valley of Nubia, in the region of Tushka, would have enabled the excess floodwaters to safely be diverted towards the fossil valley of the pre-Nile. However, it was decided to select a site near Aswan, making it necessary to inundate more than 250km of river valley. Over the years, this strategy has been revealed to have been faulty, and numerous irrigation schemes in upriver countries have progressively reduced the amount of water descending into Egypt. The dire warning of the 14th century oracle appears to be prophetic: "the water of the river in my country will be stopped from reaching yours, which I shall cause to die of thirst..."

Book excerpt: The present book is about history, written through the satirical eyes of a Hungarian refugee in the early 1960s, a few years after he settled in England. The title "Past, Present and Future," together with the subtitle "An Irreverent Treatment of History," explains beautifully what the book is about. Brief but profound historical judgments are made about everything that matters: socialism, capitalism, communism, Nazism, colonialism, revolution, science, religion, war and peace, and stability and anarchy. The common factor is power. Everything is explained by the love of power by individuals, groups, social classes, dictators, and nations--by people who are high up and by people who are low down.

Book excerpt: About the Book The Village of Lansing and Its Airport is a history of how the Lansing Airport was developed into what it is today. This story looks at the fascinating and often underappreciated ways that it served the people of the Village of Lansing and the entire Chicago Southland. While the book tells the history of events in the airport’s development, it also provides a guided virtual tour through the pages of history and gives the reader an opportunity to participate as if they were actually reliving the experiences. The book is designed to revitalize the planned development of the airport in a format not typical of a historical memoir. About the Author Robert R. Malkas currently resides in Lansing, Illinois. When he first moved there, he went to sleep every night under the first ever airport rotating beacon atop Henry Ford’s Hangar at the Chicago Hammond airport. He came to believe he was being sent a message from Henry Ford himself about his contributions to the history of aviation in the United States. Malkas accepted this challenge and became the first chairman of a village commission assigned the task of managing the Lansing Airport’s growth. He was later appointed airport manager and served in that position for twenty-three years until his retirement in 2008.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ireland's economic policies have not served it well in recent years, but not many people understand why the country's people continue to suffer. André Hakizimana, a resident of Ireland who holds a master's degree in economics, examines the country's economic policies and provides solutions for growth. This study does not intend to criticize Irish policy makers, but instead seeks to address the origins of Irish economic growth, financial crises and Irish recessions. It considers the following questions: - What caused economic turmoil in Ireland's financial markets in recent years? - How have some begun working together to create healthy growth? - Why did the country slip into recessions before and after independence? Neither the 2008 recession in Ireland nor the country's current financial crisis were caused by an international crisis or the crash of the Anglo-Irish bank. Instead, there are fundamental problems in the Irish economic strategy that are to blame-and they could continue to hurt the country unless action is taken. Discover a blueprint to grow the economy in Ireland, and learn why past efforts have failed by exploring The Irish Economy-Past, Present, and Future.
