Book Synopsis The Bhagavata-Purana Part 1 by : J. L. Shastri
Download or read book The Bhagavata-Purana Part 1 written by J. L. Shastri and published by Motilal Banarsidass. This book was released on 2004-01-01 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Purana is a class of literature that treats of ancient religion, philosophy, history, sociology, politics and other subjects. It is an Encyclopaedia of various branches of knowledge and ancient wisdom. It has been defined as a class of literature that contains material on the topics of Creation, Dissolution of Manus, Ages of Manus, Genealogies and the History of glorious kings. For dealing primarily with these subjects it has been called Pancalaksana a little that was incorporated in the Puranas themselves and had become popular by the Fifth Century A.D., for it was included by Amarasimha in his lexicon 'Amarakosa'. But as the process of interpolation continued, the Pancalaksana definition was found inadequate. The Puranic redactors adopted a Dasalaksana definition that suited the contemporary text. Still, the dynamic forces were at work and the process of insertion, modification and abridgement went on and it was soon discovered that the Dasalaksana definition too fell short of an actual fact. It was found that the Puranas contained certain aspects that were not covered by any of the five or ten characteristics. Besides some of the characteristics covered by the Pancalaksana or Dasalaksana definition were not found in certain Puranas. In fact, the Purana as a class represents the different phases and aspects of the life of diverse ages. It is impossible to adopt a standard definition for the class of literary composition that contains heterogeneous phases and aspects. Moreover, a definition framed on the numerical basis of points is bound to be imperfect. The Puranas are divided into two classes the Mahapuranas and the Upapuranas. Each class consists of eighteen Puranas. Thus the number of the Puranas is thirty-six.

Download or read book Mirror of Fortune written by Dr. A. Shanker and published by Prabhat Prakashan. This book was released on 2021-11-29 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mirror of Fortune: Journey of Dr. A. Shanker by Dr. A. Shanker: Embark on a captivating journey through the inspiring life of Dr. A. Shanker as he shares his personal memoir, offering profound insights into his achievements, challenges, personal growth, and reflections that serve as a motivating story of overcoming obstacles and pursuing success. This book ‘Mirror of Fortune’ is such an instrument to know the circumstances and conditions of life through astrology that leads to recognizing the signs of favorable and unfavorable circumstances. Those who believe in and practice Jyotish, need it at every step. Yet, sometimes when a person with dexterity in this sphere is not found, people have to face serious problems. In today’s life, those having insufficient knowledge and who have traveled frequently and stayed in jungles and deserts too face difficulties. The sphere of astrology is very wide. One should have mastery over its different aspects to comprehend satisfactorily. Unless and until one attains deep knowledge and expertise his sincerity and honesty remain dubious. Meanwhile, whatever I could gain through my study and experience I have put together in this book. I take no pride in doing so as I am not an erudite scholar who is presenting his views to impress readers of his merits and accomplishments. To me, there is no difference between fame and the sun on a rainy day.

Book Synopsis Lucian’s Laughing Gods by : Inger NI Kuin
Download or read book Lucian’s Laughing Gods written by Inger NI Kuin and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2023-04-10 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No comic author from the ancient world features the gods as often as Lucian of Samosata, yet the meaning of his works remain contested. He is either seen as undermining the gods and criticizing religion through his humor, or as not engaging with religion at all, featuring the gods as literary characters. His humor was traditionally viewed as a symptom of decreased religiosity, but that model of religious decline in the second century CE has been invalidated by ancient historians. Understanding these works now requires understanding what it means to imagine as laughing and laughable gods who are worshipped in everyday cult. In Lucian's Laughing Gods, author Inger N. I. Kuin argues that in ancient Greek thought, comedic depictions of divinities were not necessarily desacralizing. In religion, laughter was accommodated to such an extent as to actually be constituent of some ritual practices, and the gods were imagined either to reciprocate or push back against human laughter—they were never deflated by it. Lucian uses the gods as comic characters, but in doing so, he does not automatically negate their power. Instead, with his depiction of the gods and of how they relate to humans—frivolous, insecure, callous—Lucian challenges the dominant theologies of his day as he refuses to interpret the gods as ethical models. This book contextualizes Lucian’s comedic performances in the intellectual life of the second century CE Roman East broadly, including philosophy, early Christian thought, and popular culture (dance, fables, standard jokes, etc.). His texts are analyzed as providing a window onto non-elite attitudes and experiences, and methodologies from religious studies and the sociology of religion are used to conceptualize Lucian’s engagement with the religiosity of his contemporaries.
