Book Synopsis Neckties in the Tropics by : James E. Rauch

Book excerpt: Some cultural goods, like clothes and films, are consumed socially and are thus characterized by the same consumption network externalities as languages. At the same time, producers of new cultural goods in any one country draw on the stock of ideas generated by previous cultural production in all countries. For such goods, costless trade and communication tend to lead to the dominance of one cultural style, increasing utility in the short run but reducing quality and generating cultural stagnation in the long run. Increasing trade costs while keeping communication costs low may reduce welfare by stimulating production of cultural goods that are "compatible" with the dominant style, thereby capturing consumption network externalities, but that add little to the stock of usable ideas. A reform of cultural policy suggested by our two-country analysis could be to remove import restrictions in the smaller country and replace them with subsidies to the fixed costs of production of new cultural goods in its traditional style.

Book Synopsis China's Cultural Trade Strategy by : Luo Libin
Download or read book China's Cultural Trade Strategy written by Luo Libin and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-08-04 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to provide theoretical and empirical interpretations of certain phenomena in the development of China's cultural industry. Using the film and television industries as the major cases, the author proposes suggestions on China's ongoing development of foreign cultural trade. The author argues that China is well positioned to take full advantage of the opportunities of globalization, to develop its cultural industry in a leapfrog manner. China's rapid economic growth drives the country's development from a small cultural market to a large one. Since it is a middle-income country, its cultural industry still has a relatively large potential to grow. The study on China's foreign cultural trade strategy can contribute to the growing needs of people for a better life and enhance China's "cultural confidence". With an explanation of existing practices, this book also aims to make recommendations on China's strategy for developing foreign cultural trade in the era of globalization. This book will be a good read for students, researchers and scholars of Chinese studies, East Asian studies and culture economics, and those interested in China's film and television industries.

Book Synopsis Community, Economic Creativity, and Organization by : Ash Amin
Download or read book Community, Economic Creativity, and Organization written by Ash Amin and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2008-09-25 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has long been an interest of researchers in economics, sociology, organization studies, and economic geography to understand how firms innovate. Most recently, this interest has begun to examine the micro-processes of work and organization that sustain social creativity, emphasizing the learning and knowing through action when social actors and technologies come together in 'communities of practice'; everyday interactions of common purpose and mutual obligation. These communities are said to spark both incremental and radical innovation. In the book, leading international scholars critically examine the concept of communities of practice and its applications in different spatial, organizational, and creative settings. Chapters examine the development of the concept, the link between situated practice and different types of creative outcome, the interface between spatial and relational proximity, and the organizational demands of learning and knowing through communities of practice. More widely, the chapters examine the compatibility between markets, knowledge capitalism, and community; seemingly in conflict with each other, but discursively not. Exploring the frontiers of current understanding of situated knowing and learning, this book is for all those interested in the economic sociology of organizational creativity and knowledge capitalism in general.

Book excerpt: Now available online: The Transatlantic Colossus: Global Contributions to Broaden the Debate on the EU-US Free Trade Agreement (2014), a publication from the Berlin Forum on Global Politics (BFoGP) in collaboration with the Internet & Society Collaboratory and FutureChallenges.org of the Bertelsmann Stiftung. The free trade agreement (TAFTA | TTIP) currently being negotiated between the United States and the European Union has the potential to significantly impact the lives of people on both sides of the Atlantic and across the world. Because it is crucial to broaden the debate on this topic of global importance, the Berlin Forum on Global Politics decided to send out an international call for papers in order to collect a strong plurality of views on TAFTA | TTIP as part of the Collaboratory's Initiative on "Globalization and the Internet". The result is an open knowledge publication, freely accessible under its Creative Commons (BY) license, which includes 22 articles written by a multitude of well-informed global stakeholders, members of civil society, academia, think tanks, consumer and activist groups, and business organizations.
