Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When you visit a website, check your email, or download music, you enter into a contract that you probably don't know exists. "Wrap contracts" - shrinkwrap, clickwrap and browsewrap agreements - are non-traditional contracts that look nothing like legal documents. Contrary to what courts have held, they are not "just like" other standard form contracts, and consumers do not perceive them the same way. Wrap contract terms are more aggressive and permit dubious business practices, such as the collection of personal information and the appropriation of user-created content. In digital form, wrap contracts are weightless and cheap to reproduce. Given their low cost and flexible form, businesses engage in "contracting mania" where they use wrap contracts excessively and in a wide variety of contexts. Courts impose a duty to read upon consumers but don't impose a duty upon businesses to make contracts easy to read. The result is that consumers are subjected to onerous legalese for nearly every online interaction. In Wrap Contracts: Foundations and Ramifications, Nancy Kim explains why wrap contracts were created, how they have developed, and what this means for society. She explains how businesses and existing law unfairly burden users and create a coercive contracting environment that forces users to "accept" in order to participate in modern life. Kim's central thesis is that how a contract is presented affects and reveals the intent of the parties. She proposes doctrinal solutions - such as the duty to draft reasonably, specific assent, and a reconceptualization of unconscionability - which fairly balance the burden of wrap contracts between businesses and consumers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The eight papers presented in this monograph are a result of the Problem Solving and Critical Thinking Research Workshop that was held in conjunction with the 1990 National Educational Computing Conference (NECC). The intent of the workshop was to provide a unique forum for researchers to share ideas in a special area of educational computing. The monograph provides an overview of the general issues of problem solving and critical thinking in education as well as specialized areas of interest in intelligent tutoring and program construction. The papers included in this monograph are: (1) "Problem Solving, Critical Thinking, and Computing: An Overview" (Cathleen A. Norris and James L. Poirot); (2) "'Mindstorms' Revisited: Computers, Problem Solving, and Knowledge-based Instruction" (Karen Swan); (3) "Defining Programming and Logo as Vehicles for Developing Higher Order Thinking Skills" (Jim Dunne); (4) "Abstracted Knowledge: A Mid-Road Transfer Approach to Critical Thinking" (Clifton S. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This much-needed study draws on fresh material and firsthand observation to provide an understanding of North Korea as it exists today. North Korea under Kim Chong-il: Power, Politics, and Prospects for Change delves deeply into what we know—and what we think we know—about the current North Korean system. This incisive book probes the dynamics that inform the nation's domestic and foreign policies, examining key leadership institutions and personalities, as well as prospects for the next regime. In outlining the major events behind Kim Chong-il's assumption of power, Ken E. Gause illuminates the environment that shaped Chong-il's worldview and his concept of the regime and his role in it. The book focuses on regime politics since 1994. Among other critical topics, the book examines the evolution of North Korean decision-making with regard to its internal and external affairs and how both are intermingled. The prospects for a third hereditary succession and the prospective stability of the next regime are also considered.

Book excerpt: Technology enriched school projects are initiatives in real school settings that try to reduce or remove problems and constraints that hamper the effective use of computers in the schools. These projects are based, not on technology, but on educational need and vision. They examine the atmosphere and functioning of a school that uses technology for change and stimulation. The following case studies from technology enriched schools are presented: (1) "Mount Newton: A Technology-Enriched Middle School" (Keven Elder); (2) "California Model Technology Schools: The Monterey Perspective" (Kam Matray); (3) "Apple Classroom of Tomorrow: West High School" (Robert Howard and Jane Pratt); (4) "Technology-Enriched Schools in the Netherlands" (Jef Moonen and Jos Beishuizen); (5) "An Information Technology School Project in Romania" (Ion Diamandi); (6) "Computerization of an Israeli School System: Project Comptown" (Elad Peled, Zimra Peled, and Gad Alexander); (7) "School of the Future Project at F. M. Black Middle School" (Richard A. Smith and Anthony Sassi); (8) "The Quinte Lighthouse Project" (Robert Holt); and (9) "Netherhall School: Building for the Future on the Experience of the Past" (Alastair J. Wells). Synthesis and reflections are provided by the editors in "Summarizing the Case Studies of Technology-Enriched Schools" and "Reflections on Technology-Enriched Schools." Five appendixes summarize details about the projects. (Contains 33 references.) (SLD)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Collision between Australia and SE Asia began in the Early Miocene and reduced the former wide ocean between them to a complex passage which connects the Pacific and Indian Oceans. Today, the Indonesian Throughflow passes through this gateway and plays an important role in global thermohaline flow. The surrounding region contains the maximum global diversity for many marine and terrestrial organisms. Reconstruction of this geologically complex region is essential for understanding its role in oceanic and atmospheric circulation, climate impacts, and the origin of its biodiversity. The papers in this volume discuss the Palaeozoic to Cenozoic geological background to Australia and SE Asia collision. They provide the background for accounts of the modern Indonesian Throughflow and oceanographic changes since the Neogene, and consider aspects of the region's climate history--
