Book excerpt: Excerpt from Johnson's History of Nebraska This volume has been the outgrowth of a desire, not only of myself, as an individual, once an actor in all these scenes of fron. Tier life, but as a cherished feeling of the people of the State, and particularly the Old settlers, that a permanent record should be made of the early days. The men who left their eastern homes and came to build up a new State in the great sisterhood of States were men of no ordinary stamp. There might be, as there always are in such new settlements, mere adventurers, reckless speculators, and selfish persons, but the rank and the file, the bone and the muscle, were men who came to stay. Men who counted the cost, who measured the sacrifices, who knew that they were coming to the wilderness, to the abodes of savage life, that they would leave for a time the comforts and luxuries of civilization, that they with their wives and children in founding a new basis of civilization would endure suffering and exposure, if not actual want; but these men had the vision of to-dav before them; they saw with prophetic eye the oncoming thousands; they saw the fields blos sowing for the harvest, they heard the songs of harvest home. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History and Stories of Nebraska Stories are the harp strings of history, transforming the past into melody and rhythm. The best stories live forever in the human mind. They greet us in the Latin, Teutonic, and Celtic tongues, surprise us in the ancient Greek, Arabic, and Hindoo literature, and astonish us in the rude folk tales of primitive peoples who have no written language. The demand for a good story is as wide, as unsatisfied, as human longing, and the search for a new one as difficult and elusive as the discovery of a new element in nature. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Collections of the Nebraska State Historical Society, Vol. 17 In the preparation of what I am about to say in this address, I had in mind a broader purpose than merely inter esting the members of the Nebraska State Historical Society in the wealth Of its possessions and the work it is doing. I wish as much as possible to interest all the people of the state in the variety and character of the material that has been collected and is preserved in the museum and in the extent and scope Of the reference library of the society. I wished to create, if I could, in the minds of the people a desire to visit our rooms and to look at what we have. I hoped to induce the state to be sufficiently liberal in its appropriations to properly maintain and house these priceless records of its history. History, of all studies, contains the greatest amount Of instructions and of principles and of ideas in the facts which it relates. Humanity, viewed as a whole, is the most interesting subject for man. Every man that comes into the world should make himself acquainted with the place he occupies in the order of time, the increasing or decreasing of civilization, age by age. The picture of humanity should be painted with broad strokes, as a Turner would use the brush, for the eyes of the people to see and enjoy it. History develops thought because it contains the elements of reflection, and by this process it develops con science in the people. These are but glimpses of some Of the primary purposes Of state historical societies which make them worthy Of state support and of the patronage Of the people. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Publications of the Nebraska State Historical Society, Vol. 20 Between the crude people and material resources of the northwestern plains (and especially of the part called the Nebraska Country), and St. Louis, there was a notable mutuality, a sort of Useless each without the other relationship. That more or less romantic fact is illumined along the serial thread of the story; and while the French founders of St. Louis and their compatriots lacked the genius for the larger enterprise of building a permanent empire of the greater Northwest, beyond the Ohio, which they at first occupied or possessed, but let slip to their British rivals, yet for the rudimentary achievement their temperament was the better fitted. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Semi-Centennial History of Nebraska: Historical Sketch Touching the history of the world fifty years is but a short stroke of the pendulum, yet what marvelous achievements are wrought during that fleeting swing of time! The purpose of this volume is to review the development of. A great commonwealth, Nebraska, at the close of her semi-centennial, and to recount the principal incidents preparatory to Statehood. For the successful execution of the purpose outlined it has been our good fortune - and that of the reader as well, - to secure the services of Prof. A. E. Sheldon, A. M.. Whose elaborate investigations and extensive study of the history of Nebraska, have eminently qualified him for the task. Supplementary to this historical sketch, and realizing that the best aid to comprehension is comparison, we have sought to assist by a comparative showing, the reader's appreciation of the remarkable progress of a pioneer people. As such accomplishments are attained only through the activities of a sturdy race it is therefore assumed that a history conforming to the needs of the busy life is most essential. -with this thought the main points in the state's history are presented, and comparative illustrations of her resources and industries shown. Many of the illustrations have been made for special use in this history and are published for the first time. To the heroic, progressive Nebraskan this work is sincerely dedicated. Frank L. Lemon. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Discovery of Nebraska: Read Before the Nebraska Historical Society It is true that the only discovery of our state, which can be regarded in any sense as permanent, that which was followed by the usual horde of ad venturers, traders and explorers, dates from a long subsequent period. The city of St. Louis was estab lished in the year 17 64, and in the preceding sum mer its founder, Laclede Liguest, visited the Mis souri. Gradually the advancing wave of commerce crept up that river, until it reached the most powerful and mighty of the savage nations of that day, the proud, wealthy, populous and pugnacious tribe of the Omahas, with their famous chief Wash-ing-guh salt-6a, or the Blackbird, whose prowess Irving has celebrated. And whose lineal descendants still exer cise, on a little reservation, hereditary rule over the docile handful to which that great nation is reduced. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceeding and Collections of the Nebraska State Historical Society That was the name of our boat, and she was loaded to the gunnels, as they say, with passengers and freight. In fact, all the state rooms, berths, and cosy places were taken for the women and children, and men with families, the rush to Kansas, Nebraska and further was so enormous that spring. We young unmarried fellows had to sleep on the deck on blankets, mattresses, etc so that I early began to know what roughing it meant.
