Book excerpt: Filled with wit, insight, and inspiration, this anthology includes sermons for every Sunday and major celebration throughout the Christian year based on the First Readings from Cycle C of the Revised Common Lectionary. Three outstanding preachers from diverse denominational backgrounds interpret texts from the Old Testament and Acts in fresh ways that proclaim the good news for the twenty-first century. Their powerful messages remind us that the Hebrew scriptures are much more than just ancient history and explore what they mean for us today. Proclaiming timeless themes of justice and righteousness, as well as God's faithful covenant and enduring forgiveness, these imaginative homilies call us to lead better, more God-centered lives. This is an essential resource that's useful for: - Fresh homiletical approaches to the lectionary texts - Preaching illustrations - A clearer understanding of scripture passages - Adult study and discussion groups - Personal devotions and Bible study on each Sunday's texts The illustrations in these sermons, taken from both classical and common sources, as well as personal experiences, are worth the price of the book. I'll buy any book of sermons that gives me one or two good illustrations that are fresh and believable. Charles Reeb is a master at illustrating his points. John K. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Old Testament details the epic faith story of ancient people who, just like us today, seek God's answers to complex problems. Yet because pastors sometimes overlook this rich source of preaching texts, many people in the pews are not fully aware of the Hebrew Scriptures and their profound lessons for modern living. In this inspiring collection of spiritually enlightening messages based on the First Readings from Cycle B of the Revised Common Lectionary, four master preachers insightfully demonstrate the continuing relevance of passages from the Old Testament and the book of Acts. Building on stories in which God moves ordinary people to extraordinary heights, these sermons powerfully proclaim timeless themes of justice and righteousness while reminding us that God's grace is the model for the Christian community's core values of self-giving love and forgiveness. Each thought-provoking message is filled with compelling stories and illustrations from everyday life, and challenges readers to love and serve the Lord, trusting in divine providence even in the midst of a world that sometimes seems cruel and senseless. This essential resource is useful for: - Fresh homiletical approaches to the lectionary texts - Preaching illustrations - Understanding scripture passages - Bible study and discussion groups - Personal devotions and inspirational reading

Book excerpt: The resources in this one-volume library provide a variety of paragraphs and sentences, prayers and calls, and hymn suggestions based on all three Scripture readings for every Sunday of the year. For each Sunday in the lectionary there are: three responsive calls to worship, three collects, three prayers of confession and three sets of hymn suggestions. While most congregations keep the order of worship consistent from week to week, it is important to continually refresh the components and make them relevant to the day's lessons. This book makes it possible to focus worship on the same lesson on which the sermon is based, or it allows emphasis to be placed on one of the lessons the preacher has not chosen to preach about, or portions can be combined from all three to provide a unity in the lessons.

Book excerpt: Drawing upon a number of scripture texts from the gospel of Mark, this collection of sermons speaks about many challenges on the road to Christian maturity. The call of the gospel is given to all who find themselves in sticky human circumstances, whether they are troubled by relationships, tainted by affluence, tired of the career ladder, traumatized by persecution, or threatened by death. When people enter into a community of faith it may take a while for them to grow into mature membership within God's family. They may need to be weaned from selfish actions, stingy habits, and resentful attitudes. This book addresses those challenges in such chapters as: - Invitation to Community - Love and Money - What to Say When You Roll Out of Bed - Something to Do While the World Falls Apart There is an air of unpredictability about William Carter's sermons... Enjoy their humor; their joyful interplay of the biblical and the contemporary, their delightful poetic cadences. Thomas G. Long Princeton Theological Seminary William G. Carter serves as pastor and head of staff of the First Presbyterian Church of Clarks Summit, Pennsylvania. He received his B.A. degree from the State University of New York and his M.Div. degree from Princeton Theological Seminary. His sermons and articles have appeared in Journal For Preachers, Presbyterian Survey, Preaching, Lectionary Homiletics, The Christian Ministry, and Best Sermons (Harper-Collins, 1994).
