Cuba's place in history and its thriving wildlife found nowhere else are testament to its strategic location where the Caribbean Sea, Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico converge. Strict environmental laws, low population and the absence of capitalist development and materialism helped preserve the fragile balance between people, the land and sea. Scientists claim it is like being in the Florida keys 150 years ago abundant endemic flora and fauna, flourishing coral reefs patrolled by giant groupers and schools of sharks. An accidental Eden? Not exactly. Stringent government rules combined with an organic agriculture due to a lack of fertilizers have preserved Cuba as a living laboratory of endemic riches and agricultural sustainability. The limited number of cars and boats together with the absence of conspicuous consumption have conspired to conserve the environment. Cuba did something radically different and could become the model of how to do it right ecologically. An opportunity the rest of us have lost. Could it be that Cuba's lasting revolution is green not red? La Habana: The cultural lodestar. Since its founding in 1515 Havana's cultural flora and fauna has flourished as a result of the cross polination between Old Worlds Europe & Africa and the New Caribbean, New Orleans & New York creating new explosive hybrids. Pulling from its African rhythms and Iberian, Franco-Creole symphonic roots, Havana conjured a music so powerful it went around the world three times in the 20th C alone. Classical composers such as Saumel & Cervantes invented danzas and contradanzas that with syncopation laid the foundation for Danzon, Rumba, Ragtime, Salsa and Latin Jazz. If we believe that architecture is froz

Book excerpt: Cuba's greatest photographer captures the spirit of the Cuban Revolution—and of Cuba itself—in unforgettable images and text. Korda’s photographs and breathtaking reminiscences capture some of the 20th-century’s greatest moments with unprecedented intimacy as no other book ever could or will. In the first weeks of 1959, Korda joined the staff of the newly created daily newspaper of Cuba, Revolución. From that moment on, Korda documented the heady early days of revolutionary Cuba. When Fidel Castro visited the United States in April 1959, Korda went with him. When Castro visited the Soviet Union in 1963 and 1964, Korda was there, documenting intimate moments with Soviet leader Nikita Kruschev’s family and appearing to show the end of the breach that had followed their country’s divergent policies during the Cuban Missile Crisis of October 1962. But probably Korda’s greatest moment came on March 5, 1960, during a funeral ceremony for the victims of the sabotaged French freighter La Coubre, a ship carrying arms purchased by the Cuban military. Fidel knew the attack to be the work of America’s CIA. And it altered relations between the two countries forever after. Korda was less than a dozen steps from the platform where Fidel Castro was addressing the crowd of mourners. There were foreign observers present, including Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir. Che stepped forward to look over the crowd. Korda shot him through his telephoto lens, even though he was near to him. The result would turn into nothing less than one of the most enduring images of our age, though the picture would not see light of day for another year. It was first published on April 15, 1961, just before the Bay of Pigs invasion, and would only become well known when Che’s Italian publisher Gianfranco Feltrinelli printed thousands of posters of the image shortly after Che’s death.

Book Synopsis Seasons of My Heart by : Susana Trilling

Book excerpt: Nestled in the heart of the Mexican state of Oaxaca is Rancho Aurora, home of the Seasons of My Heart cooking school and inn. Ten years ago, chef and owner Susana Trilling left New York City and a very successful catering business to follow what turned out to be her calling--to immerse herself in the foods, culture, and traditions of this remote and exotic region of Mexico and share her knowledge with the rest of the world. In this book and its companion PBS series, Susana shares her deep passion and anthropologic knowledge of this fascinating region whose cuisine remains virtually untouched by influences from the outside world. The pre-Hispanic and Spanish-influenced dishes, such as empanadas, nopales, quelites, and moles, are much more complex and delicious than the usual rice and beans found north of the border. Susana not only takes us on a fascinating journey through the city markets, mountain regions, coastal villages, and low-lying coffee and cacao plantations, she introduces us to the beautiful people who work and live there. Along the way, she shares traditional recipes from each region, with her own improvisations and improvements, showing us how to easily approach this rich and delicious food in a modern American kitchen. From Dona Josefa Sanchez's empanadas de betabel (beet empanadas), served to hungry shoppers at the Etla market in the Central Valleys, to the darkly luscious and mysterious Mole Negro Oaxaqueno (Oaxacan black mole) from the bustling heart of Oaxaca City, cooked up in quantity for the Día de los Muertos (day of the dead), to a tamale-making session given by the locally infamous Candida Blas Aguilar in the sleepy Isthmus region--this is truly a culinary journey through the heart and soul of Oaxaca.
