Book excerpt: The Soil Conservation Service (SCS) curve number (CN) method is one of the most popular methods for computing the runoff volume from a rainstorm. It is popular because it is simple, easy to understand and apply, and stable, and accounts for most of the runoff producing watershed characteristics, such as soil type, land use, hydrologic condition, and antecedent moisture condition. The SCS-CN method was originally developed for its use on small agricultural watersheds and has since been extended and applied to rural, forest and urban watersheds. Since the inception of the method, it has been applied to a wide range of environments. In recent years, the method has received much attention in the hydrologic literature. The SCS-CN method was first published in 1956 in Section-4 of the National Engineering Handbook of Soil Conservation Service (now called the Natural Resources Conservation Service), U. S. Department of Agriculture. The publication has since been revised several times. However, the contents of the methodology have been nonetheless more or less the same. Being an agency methodology, the method has not passed through the process of a peer review and is, in general, accepted in the form it exists. Despite several limitations of the method and even questionable credibility at times, it has been in continuous use for the simple reason that it works fairly well at the field level.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new edition provides a current and comprehensive analysis of some key federal agencies that manage natural resources: the Army Corps of Engineers, the U. S. Forest Service, the National Park Service, the Natural Resources Conservation Service (formerly the Soil Conservation Service), the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Bureau of Reclamation, and the Bureau of Land Management. Although the book's framework remains unchanged, the chapters have been revised and updated with over 50 percent new material, and more emphasis has been placed on the centrality of the budget process for policymaking. Staking Out the Terrain offers a wealth of historical detail as well as an analysis of current policy conflicts over natural resource management. In addition to examining current trends in water and land management, Clarke and McCool put forward an innovative proposal to reshape federal natural resource administration for the twenty-first century.

Book excerpt: For many years farmers and ranchers have been building ponds for livestock water and for irrigation. By 1980 more than 2.1 million ponds had been built in the United States by land users on privately owned land. More will be needed in the future. The demand for water has increased tremendously in recent years, and ponds are one of the most reliable and economical sources of water. Ponds are now serving a variety of purposes, including water for livestock and for irrigation, fish production, field and orchard spraying, fire protection, energy conservation, wildlife habitat, recreation, erosion control, and landscape improvement. This handbook describes embankment and excavated ponds and outlines the requirements for building each. The information comes from the field experience and observation of land users, engineers, conservationists, and other specialists.

Book excerpt: This is a book of inspirational short stories of people and circumstances that influenced the author to dedicate his life to conservation out on the land. Stories of how land management effects natural resources of soil, water, air, animals, and plants. Stories of how conservation messages (secrets, if you will) were shared with ranchers, farmers, and others throughout the author's conservation career and how they benefited. The story of how he came to create a nationally televised, conservation-based, half-hour weekly show and became a television personality, hosting the show for four years is featured also. Stories of developing technical knowledge, skills, and abilities are included as well as stories of leadership development. Stories are included that may inspire others to affect positive changes in their businesses whether or not they are out on the land. The stories contain lessons to be learned and are inspirational for those who wish to work in conservation careers to develop their own journeys to share conservation secrets out on the land. Some stories are humorous, a few may strike an emotional chord with some, and all stories are factual and contain teachable moments. The breadth and depth of the author's experiences are weaved in the stories of working with ranchers, other land managers, and agency employees. An enjoyable read covering about seven decades of out on the land conservation stories.
