Book excerpt: We study Nash implementation by natural price-quantity mechanisms in pure exchange economies with free-disposal (Saijo et al., 1996, 1999) when agents have weak/strong intrinsic preferences for honesty (Dutta and Sen, 2012). First, the Walrasian rule is shown to be non-implementable when all agents have weak intrinsic preferences for honesty. Second, the class of efficient allocation rules that are implementable is identified as long as at least one agent has strong intrinsic preferences for honesty. Finally, the Walrasian rule is shown to belong to that class.

Book excerpt: The paper proposes necessary and sufficient conditions for the natural implementation of (efficient) social choice correspondences (SCCs) in pure finite exchange economies when some of the agents are partially honest. A partially honest agent is an agent who strictly prefers to tell the truth when lying has no better material consequences for her. Firstly, it is shown that if there is even one partially honest agent in the economy (and the planner does not know her identity), then any SCC is Nash implementable by a natural price-allocation mechanism. Secondly, and in sharp contrast with the results of conventional models of natural implementation, it is shown that the equivalence relationship between natural price-allocation mechanisms and natural price-quantity2 mechanisms no longer holds. Finally, and even more strikingly, the paper reports that the class of implementable SCCs by natural price-quantity mechanisms is significantly enlarged.

Nevertheless, an honest agent may exist, not among the actual participants, but in their higher-order beliefs. We assume that “all agents are selfish” never happens to be common knowledge. We show a positive result in a wide range of asymmetric information environments: with a minor restriction on signal correlation called information diversity, any incentive compatible SCF is uniquely implementable in Bayesian Nash equilibrium. We use only detail-free mechanisms.
