There is also a class that go from tribe to tribe, and their medicine men. The intelligence of the natives is quite underrated. Their skill and activity in war, and their subtlety as diplomatists, Mr. Lang says, are quite equal to the North American Indian. (having mixed with the North American Indians, I think this is rather exaggerated.) About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Native Tribes of South Australia The object of this publication is to preserve and to place before the public, in a collected form, some of the few accounts which have been written respecting the native tribes of South Australia. They are not numerous, nor are they sufficiently complete to furnish the materials for a full history of those races which once inhabited the immense territory known as the Province of South Australia. No attempt was ever made by, or at the instance of the Colonial Government, to investigate and record the manners and customs of the Aborigines, nor to preserve their language; so that now only a comparatively imperfect idea can be formed of the South Australian natives as a whole. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Natives of Australia Savages, or, as they are better termed, peoples in the lower stages of culture, are studied by anthropological experts more and more closely every year, though in England and British possessions generally there is little money, public or private, available for expeditions, costly or otherwise; but the results of these researches appear in a form at once too technical and too bulky to attract the ordinary reader, who wishes to learn something of the life of these children of nature. In the British Isles, where there are few families but send some member into our dependencies as Government official, soldier, or colonist, interest in the subject races of the empire should be especially keen; the present series is intended to supply, in handy and readable form, the needs of those who desire to learn something of the life of these races, who, even if they are less civilised than ourselves, are perhaps not less worthy of study than beetles and jellyfish. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Native Tribes of South-East Australia I have endeavoured to show on the maps which accompany this work the range of the several class organisa tions, and the locality in each state, of each tribe referred to. But the reader will kindly bear in mind the great difficulty which always presents itself, not only in defining the true boundaries of any tribal country, but also, in many cases, of giving the true and comprehensive name of the tribe. A member of a clan will probably give its name, and only on closer inquiry will give the name of the tribe of which that clan is a part. It is still more difficult to ascertain the name of what I have termed a nation, that is, of a group which includes two or more kindred tribes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Native Tribes of Central Australia It has been the lot of one of us to spend the greater part of the past twenty years in the centre of the continent, and as sub-protector of the Aborigines he has had exceptional opportunities of coming into contact with, and of gaining the confidence of, the members of the large and important Arunta tribe, amongst whom he has lived, and of which tribe both of us, it may be added, are regarded as fully initiated members. In the month ofjuly, 1894, we met at Alice Springs, when the scientific expedition organised by Mr. W. A. Horn, of Adelaide, visited that part of the continent, and it was then that one of us gave to Dr. E. C. Stirling, the anthropologist of the expedition, notes which have since been published in the anthropological section of the report on the work of the expedition. This report included the results of the informa tion gained up to that time with regard to the Central tribes, and in respect to certain points, we have, to some extent, had to traverse the same ground in order to make our account as complete as possible but it was very evident that in regard to the customs and organisation of the tribe we were then only on the threshold of the inquiry, and at a subsequent time we determined to carry on the work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Aborigines of Western Australia I am well aware that the subject is rather out of my line, and for this reason alone I can scarcely expect to do justice to the theme. Nevertheless, during my wander ings through Western Australia, in the capacity of a mining engineer, I came across a good many of the natives; and taking a profound interest in everything connected with the colony I resolved to set down in brief and simple form such facts as I could glean regarding this most curious specimen of the human race. I lay no more claim to originality than is due to one who has arranged his matter in his own way, and added a few thoughts suggested and accruing. The same totem is never found in both phratries. Thus a person marrying out of his or her phratry, as all must do, necessarily marries out of his or her totem. The same arrangements exist among tribes which derive phratry and totem names through the father. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Aborigines of Australia: Being an Account of the Institution for Their Education at Poonindie, in South Australia With respect to the willingness of the young natives to go from Adelaide to Port Lincoln, this point has already been ascertained. Five young couples have actually gone to that settlement, where for the present they are cared for and employed by certain settlers in that district. There are several more still about Adelaide who are quite willing to follow the example thus set them. In the first instance these young married couples only will be admitted to the Institution. Schools for the children of either sex will next be added, so soon as our means and other opportunities enable us to adopt this measure. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Grammar of the Narrinyeri Tribe of Australian Aborigines Any one who has ever undertaken to gather up the grammar of an unwritten and barbarous language, will appreciate the difficulties which have to be encountered. Inquiries are useless when addressed to minds upon whom the idea of grammar never dawned. Expressions are heard having a certain force, and it is only after years of careful observation that those expressions can be analyzed, and their true character discerned; and this difficulty is increased when, as in the language of the Narrinyeri, ellipsis and abbreviations abound. The Rev. H. A. E. Meyer, a Lutheran Missionary, made a brave attempt to master the grammar of this language in 1843, and with some success; but yet his attempt presents a great number of ludicrous mistakes to one better acquainted with it. I found I had to rely on my own observations if I was to gain any correct knowledge of the language. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Working out thoroughly some conceptions suggested already by Prof. Frazer in his Golden Bough, the author has shown the social importance of the ideas about human relations and in particular about sexual relations as held by primitive man. Antiquities of prehistoric man in Europe, Asia, Africa, and America have been fully investigated and carefully described by various learned men. With respect to Australia, however, it has been considered until lately that she has no antiquities, and consequently little attempt has hitherto been made to collate the discoveries that from time to time have been made of the prehistoric arts, manufactures, and remains of her various aboriginal tribes. But as the work proceeded new specimens Continued to arrive, and as it was found that the catalogue would, for that reason alone, never be complete, he decided to extend it, so as to _include all Australian plants which up to the present are known to be of economic value, or injurious to man and domestic animals.
