Book excerpt: Vietnam's economy has been fundamentally changed by the policy reforms implemented in the 1980s to provide an environment that is more conducive for economic growth and social stabilization. The policy reforms have had a tremendous impact on economic activities and on all aspects of social life. The economy is presently moving from a centrally planned system largely based on public ownership to a market-oriented and mixed economy. Social structures and values have changed, and legal, institutional, and administrative systems are gradually changing as well. The reform process gives rise to exciting challenges and opportunities for development. Based largely on Vietnamese sources of data and information, this book presents an analysis of the main features of economic policy reforms in Vietnam, their socioeconomic impact, and several major theoretical and practical problems Vietnam faces on its path to development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After a precipitate reunification (1975), the Hanoi leadership imposed upon the South the Stalinist-Maoist strategy of economic development which had been until then applied in the North. This "Northernization" resulted in an economic crisis for the whole country during the last years of the Second Five-Year Plan. Despite some partial reforms, the country was again plunged into a more serious economic and financial crisis at the end of the Third Five-Year Plan, particularly after the ill-conceived monetary reform in September 1985. At the time of its Sixth National Congress (December 1986) the Party's new leadership advocated a strategic shift in its overall economic policy under the banner of Doi Moi (Renovation).

Book Synopsis Foreign Aid, War, and Economic Development by : Douglas C. Dacy
Download or read book Foreign Aid, War, and Economic Development written by Douglas C. Dacy and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1986-09-26 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foreign Aid, War, and Economic Development traces the economic history of South Vietnam from 1955 to 1975. During this period encompassing the Vietnam war, high-level officials paid relatively little attention to the economy of South Vietnam even though economic development was a necessary condition for the country's survival. A generous foreign aid program was designed to pay local troops and improve the standard of living of the population. Professor Dacy documents this growth in national income and the progress or lack thereof in a number of development indicators. He discusses the goals of United States economic aid and measures the net resources transferred. Additionally, the book analyzes wartime inflation and the Vietnamese tax system, and in so doing shows that the measures which would have promoted long-run viability were shunned in favor of short-run expediencies that practically doomed the country in the long run. Finally, economic development in South Vietnam is compared to that in Israel, South Korea, and Taiwan, three nations that faced high military threats during the same period.

Book Synopsis Recent Trends in Vietnam’s Rapid Economic Development by : Pham Khanh Nam
Download or read book Recent Trends in Vietnam’s Rapid Economic Development written by Pham Khanh Nam and published by Springer. This book was released on 2024-11-02 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers an up-to-date and comprehensive picture of the Vietnamese economy which is the fast-growing economy in Southeast Asia. The country has invested heavily in education, health, and development infrastructure across the country. Progress in recent decades has been strong and Vietnam has attracted significant relocation and outsourcing of production from OECD countries. In recent years much of the withdrawn foreign direct investment from China is channeled to Vietnam. The state’s development policy has created optimal conditions for further expansion of production, supply chain, education and finances. Investment in education, health, infrastructure, administration, and regulations is facilitating investment inflows, technology transfer and spillover to the growing national companies. The educated young population and disciplined labor force have provided a strong basis for the growth in the economy. The high level of productivity, improved quality of products, low and competitive cost of production, and more than 100 million people provide a strong base for a continued economic growth. This edited volume is written by the professional, young, educated, and active entrepreneurial generation with good insights into the features of the economy and its development potential. They provide an up-to-date view and empirical research-based picture of the recent trends in Vietnam's economic development. The target audience are educators, undergraduate and graduate students, domestic and foreign investors, government agencies, provincial and industrial sector decision-makers, trade partners, libraries, individual researchers, and professional and practitioners. This book helps to fill the gap in knowledge and inform development planners and investors about different sectors of the Vietnamese economy and its development potential.
Book Synopsis Policing in a Changing Vietnam by : Melissa Jardine
Download or read book Policing in a Changing Vietnam written by Melissa Jardine and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-12-30 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Knowledge about policing has been produced and disseminated unevenly so that our understanding comes from a skewed emphasis on the Anglo-American experience. Drawing on an original and comprehensive study of policing in Vietnam and engaging a Southern Criminological framework, this book explores police cultures and practices in a postcolonial, post-Confucian, transitioning economy. Identifying both similarities and differences in policing and police culture in Vietnam with those found in the dominant literature from the Global North, Policing in a Changing Vietnam challenges assumptions that police are (purportedly) apolitical, averse to tertiary education and defer to legalistic approaches to policing and law enforcement. It highlights that the variations identified in policing in Vietnam must be understood, not as deviations from Anglo-American normality, but as significant separate practices and traditions of policing from which the Global North may have something to learn. Contributing to ongoing debates on police culture and socialisation, this book explores the assumptions about relationships between the police, political systems, broad societal cultures, legal frameworks, organisations, communities and gender. An accessible and compelling read, this book will appeal to students and scholars of criminology, policing, gender studies, sociology, politics, law and all those who are interested in understanding the experiences and views of the Vietnamese police.

Book Synopsis Vietnam Joins the World by : James Morley
Download or read book Vietnam Joins the World written by James Morley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-09-16 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ten American and Japanese specialists offer a comprehensive analysis of one of the most dramatic developments in Asia today: the re-emergence of Vietnam - not as the belligerent champion of a militant ideology and socialist cause, but as an open, friendly country seeking a respected place in the world community. Basing their observations on five years of study, visits to Vietnam, and numerous interviews with knowledgeable officials, scholars and businessmen there and in the United States and Japan, the authors evaluate the political, ecnomic, social and foreign policy changes that have been taking place in Vietnam over the past decade, trace the responses of the United States and Japan and offer a policy prescription for responding to the challenges of the future.
