Book excerpt: Learners and learning is the fourth module in the study of education series, and it aims to enable teachers to analyse learning and reflect on what they can do to improve it. It draws on the learning theories of various writers, including Piaget and Vygotsky, and grounds these in examples, practical exercises, and case studies drawn from schools. This module includes an interactive learning guide, a reader, and an audiotape. The study of education series is a project of the South African institute for distance eduaction (SAIDE). Aimed at formal and informal teacher education, this series presents valuable open-learning materials for use in distance education or in face-to-face teaching. Intended for use in colleges of education at diploma level, these modules may also be usedwith additional readings in higher or postgraduate diploma courses.

Book excerpt: Raising the environmental awareness of the population is a central element for developing a sustainable environment. This report is intended to highlight how schools, teachers, and students in Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries are attempting to meet the challenge of building a sustainable society through environmental education. The main pedagogical and research issues discussed in this report reflect intense work that was carried out in the participating countries at the grass-roots or school level. Chapter I addresses the challenges of international environmental education. Chapter II deals with the pedagogical, curricular, and teacher development questions that resulted from an analysis of national reports. Chapter III concentrates on action-research as it was implemented in the countries that used it as a tool in developing school initiatives. Policy issues are addressed in Chapter IV from an analysis of the outcomes of the five in-depth studies on environmental education policy that were carried out in Australia, Austria, Finland, Germany, and Norway. Chapter V concludes with some basic dilemmas concerning present developments in environmental education and makes recommendations for the future. Contains 57 references. (JRH)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental education is a field characterised by a paradox. Few would doubt the urgency and importance of learning to live in sustainable ways, but environmental education holds nowhere near the priority position in formal schooling around the world that this would suggest. This text sets out to find out why this is so. It is divided into six parts: Part 1 is a concise history of the development of environmental education from an international perspective; Part 2 is an overview of the 'global agenda', or subject knowledge of environmental education; Part 3 introduces perspectives on theory and research in environmental education; Part 4 moves on to practice, and presents an integrated model for planning environmental education programmes; Part 5 brings together invited contributors who talk about environmental education in their own countries - from 15 countries including China, South Africa, Sri Lanka and the USA; Part 6 returns to the core questions of how progress can be made, and how we can maximise the potential of environmental education for the twenty first century.

Book excerpt: In response to the rapidly emerging environmental imperative that environmental awareness needs to be taught in the schools, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) through its Centre for Educational Research and Innovation (CERI) developed a project oriented toward grass-roots improvements by schools within environmental education initiatives. Based on the recognition that schools can provide a framework in which to gain experience in investigating, reflecting, and acting upon environmental issues, it was agreed that the participating OECD countries--Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Federal Republic of Germany, Finland, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Sweden, and Switzerland--should identify those schools that were already developing the most innovative ways of teaching and learning about environmental issues ranging across a spectrum of scientific, economic, and cultural points of view. This report summarizes and gives examples of both the work carried out in these schools, as well as the main pedagogical and strategic issues that provided the basis for this CERI project. Part I, Towards Environmental Awareness, deals with the basic pedagogical premises and provides an in-depth analysis of how these premises have emerged within the work of the selected school programs. Part II, Case Studies, is a series of descriptions and accounts of the 11 schools selected by each of the cooperating countries. Part III, Perspectives, considers environmental and school initiatives from four different perspectives, namely: educational, environmental, industrial, and governmental. An overview of the participating schools is also provided for easy reference and contact information. (JJK)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental education and education for sustainable development have become features of many countries’ formal education systems. To date, however, there have been few attempts to explore what such learning looks and feels like from the perspective of the learners. Based on in-depth empirical studies in school and university classrooms, this book presents rich insights into the complexities and dynamics of students’ environmental learning. The authors show how careful analysis of students’ environmental learning experiences can provide powerful pointers for future practice, policy and research. Environmental Learning will be a key resource for educators, teacher educators, decision-makers and researchers involved in education and sustainable development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 2004. Young people, in particular, want to learn more about contributing to the conservation of the planet, and formal education is beginning to reflect this. The National Curriculum in England and Wales, for instance, includes environmental education as a compulsory cross-curricular theme, and in Australia and the USA there are similar moves to ensure that all students are given an opportunity to learn in this area. The authors, experienced teachers and teacher educators in primary and secondary schools, here explain what environmental education is and how it can best be implemented at school and classroom level. In this handbook, school heads and curriculum co-ordinators will find advice on establishing a whole school policy and motivating the staff who need to implement it. Class teachers will find practical ideas for planning and assessing environmental education in the whole curriculum context. Throughout the book, case studies drawn from a variety of settings allow teachers to see how environmental education can work for them.
