Book excerpt: HORIZON: GREG JOHNS, SCULPTURES 1970-2002 traces the ideas and career of the Adelaide-based artist from his first commission in the late 1970s through to participation in recent exhibitions in New York and Bahrain. The story is told by noted Adelaide writer and art critic, John Neylon of the Art Gallery of South Australia. His text examines all aspects of the artist's development as a creator of large-scale public sculptures and explains the philosophy that has shaped the work. The reader is led through a rich array of ideas and images relating to the use of sculptural form as a language in which the works serve as metaphors for the human psyche and the natural/cosmic systems that define our world. A number of key sculptures are examined in detail - as are issues surrounding public art and its reception within the community. The processes of commissioning, creating and installing the sculptures are described along with intimate glimpses into the creation of each work as it proceeds from the artist's studio, to the engineering works where it is fabricated, and then on to its intended site.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grahame Kings life as an artist began with his mastery of the new art of colour reproduction as a photolithographic colour etcher in Melbourne in the 1930s. At the same time, study at the National Gallery Art School with George Bell assisted his development as a painter. After war service and travels abroad, King returned to Melbourne with his wife, the sculptor Inge King. The two held a number of joint exhibitions of paintings and sculptures in Australia throughout the 1950s and then, from c.1962 Grahame King turned his attention, increasingly, towards the art of lithography becoming a master in this field of printmaking. He has also devoted himself to promoting the art of lithography and printmaking generally through the Print Council of Australia. He is often called Australias patron saint of printmaking. The book examines his seven decades working as an artist in Melbourne and is lavishly illustrated with colour reproductions throughout.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the ferry leaves Woods Hole and Martha's Vineyard slowly rises on the horizon, something inside you changes. The air is cleaner, the sky seems more blue and the water clearer. Then you realize it is not the water or the air or the sky that change, but that something inside you changes as you leave the mainland and draw closer to the Island. Martha's Vineyard may be just a few miles off the coast of Cape Cod, but to those who love the Island, she is world away. The Wampanoag name for the Vineyard, Noepe means Island in the Streams and comes close to capturing the essence of Martha's Vineyard. To describe Martha's Vineyard historically and geographically is easy. It was formed nearly 12,000 years ago, was first settled by the Wampanoag Indians and was discovered in 1602 by English mariner Bartholomew Gosnold. It is 100 square miles and consists of six distinct towns. But to capture the spirit of the Island is a much greater challenge. Acclaimed artists Billy Morrow Jackson, a Vineyard resident and visitor for over fifty years, and his wife, Siti Maria Jackson, provide an artist's view of this unique Island in the Streams. On this Island includes original paintings, including classic works depicting the Gay Head Cliffs and Menemsha to the down Island towns of Vineyard Haven, Oak Bluffs and Edgartown. The artists focus not only on the land that is Martha's Vineyard, but they also capture the life and spirit of the people of the Island. On this Island: An Artist's View of Martha's Vineyard offers a rare view of the Island captured by two artists who know and appreciate all that the Island is.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Canadian-born and now New South Wales-based, Flossie Peitsch is both a noted visual artist and a mother of six. She is also an active community artist who has involved her family and hundreds of others in major art projects relating to Australia's history and current ways of life. Using performance and installation art techniques, as well as traditional painting and drawing - and also women's crafts of embroidery, tapestry and knitting - Flossie loses few opportunities to engage the imagination and creativity of those involved in the projects and also those who witness them. This is an intriguing and richly illustrated book focused on an extraordinarily vibrant and effective Australian artist who operates slightly outside the mainstream.

Book excerpt: Since its founding in 1993 by the late Pace Foods heiress Linda Pace, Artpace has become one of the premiere foundations for contemporary art. An artist residency program based in San Antonio, Texas, Artpace's goal is to give artists time and space in which to imagine new ways to work. Each year, nine artists (three from Texas, three from other areas of the United States and three from abroad) are invited to the foundation to create new work. Selected by guest curators the likes of Robert Storr and Okwui Enwezor, the list of artists who have undertaken residencies at ArtPace is impressive, prescient and diverse, including Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Annette Messager, Tracey Moffatt, Xu Bing, Nancy Rubins, Cornelia Parker, Inigo Manglano-Ovalle, Glenn Ligon, Kendell Geers, Carolee Schneemann, Mona Hatoum, Isaac Julien, Arturo Herrera, and Christian Jankowski. Dreaming Red includes illustrations of all the works created at ArtPace since its inception, an essay by art historian Eleanor Heartney, short essays on selected artists by the guest curators, including Cuauhtémoc Medina, Lynne Cooke, Chrissie Iles and Judith Russi Kirshner, and a lengthy essay on the personal history of the foundation and its founder.
