Book excerpt: The dam, which is a 190-foot long, earthfill dam, was built in about 1884. The height of the dam, from the crest to the bottom of the stream bed, is 8.5 feet. The spillway is located in the middle of the dam, and consists of two overflow sections separated by a concrete wall. There is no emergency low level outlet to the pond. The following are visible signs of distress at the site: deterioration of the stoplogs in the east spillway; erosion at several locations on the embankments; growth of trees and brush on the crest and upstream slopes of the dam; a depression in middle of east embankment crest; missing and dislodged riprap on the upstream slopes; spalled concrete in the spillway structure and side walls; cracked inlet headwall of the box culvert, and accumulated debris in the discharge channel. With the stoplogs in place, the spillway can discharge 9 percent of the test flood outflow of 530 cfs. The test flood would overtop the dam by 0.8 feet. Without the stoplogs, the test flood outflow would be 140 cfs at El 161.0, and would not overtop the dam.

Book excerpt: Great Pond Upper Reservoir Dam consists of three homogeneous earth embankments: the left embankment known as Dike A is about 132 ft. long and 14 ft. high; the middle embankment known as Dam B is about 1,264 ft. long and 18 ft. high; and the right embankment known as Dike C is about 877 ft. long and 12 ft. high; A concrete ogee-shaped spillway and stoplogs structure is located about 110 ft. left of the right abutment of Dike C. The spillway discharges into a paved stone masonry channel that leads into Great Pond Lower Reservoir. A valve chamber located in Dam B houses four valves which control the low level flows from the upper reservoir to the lower reservoir. The routed test flood outflow of 4,380 cfs overtops the crest of the embankments by about 0.8 ft. The spillway with stoplogs in place can pass 330 cfs or about 7 percent of the routed test flood outflow without overtopping the embankments. The dam and appurtenant works are judged to be in generally good physical condition, however, the overall condition of the dam is only fair owing to the inadequacy of the spillway. Light brush was growing on the upstream slopes of all embankments and a light growth of trees and dense brush and small trees were prevalent on the downstream slopes of all embankments. There was also a light vegetative growth through the floor of the wasteway. The crests of the embankments have been rutted by vehicular traffic. The valve chamber's concrete is in need of repair and, though the valves within the chamber were not inspected, they were reported to be operative.

The routed test flood outflow of 5,100 cfs overtops the dam by 2.7 ft. The spillways can pass 3,150 cfs or about 62 percent of the routed test flood outflow without overtopping the dam. The dam and appurtenant works are judged to be in good physical condition, however, because the spillway can only pass 62 percent of the routed test flood outflow, the dam was given an overall rating of fair. The only problem with the physical condition of the dam is the erosion downstream of each abutment.

Book excerpt: Long Pond Dam is located on Long Pond Brook about two (2.0) miles above Green River, a tributary of the Housatonic River in Great Barrington, Massachusetts. The dam is an earth embankment about 240 feet long with a vertical concrete core wall and a height of 15.4 feet, and maximum storage capacity at top of dam of about 700 acre feet. A concrete spillway with a crest length of 9.6 feet and a road bridge overhead is located in the right abutment; an 8-inch cast iron pipe drain near the center of the dam; one 10-inch cast iron water supply intake left of the dam center, and a second 14-inch cast iron water supply intake passes the left abutment. Water treatment facilities are located downstream of the left end of the dam. The pipe outlets are controlled by gate valves. The dam is in FAIR condition. The embankment is stable with no visible leakage. The dam top is not a uniform elevation and a few protective stones on the upstream face have fallen into the reservoir. Trees and shrubs are growing in the downstream slope of the dam. The spillway is in fair condition, but a stop log has been used to raise reservoir level for water works purposes and the approach channel retaining wall is tilting into the channel. The spillway and dam are adequate for 100 year frequency (1% probability) storm runoff though there would be little freeboard protection against wave action. A storm runoff of half probable maximum flood would raise the reservoir to about 0.9 feet above the top of the dam, assuming that the dam remained.

The emergency spillway is 48 feet long and occupies the center portion of the dam. As a result of the visual inspection and a review of available data, Simonds Pond Dam is considered to be in poor condition. Major concerns are: significant seepage at the toe of the dam; missing mortar and poor condition of the joints of the spillway; extensive spalling and cracking of the concrete cap on the top of the dam and spillway; deterioration of the spillway apron; extensive spalling of the concrete gatehouse foundation; and inadequate spillway capacity. The test flood inflow was estimated to be 2,500 cfs and resulted in an outflow discharge estimated to be 2,460 cfs, which would overtop the dam by approximately 1.3 feet. The maximum spillway capacity with the water level at the dam crest was estimated to be 700 cfs, which is approximately 28 percent of the test flood discharge.

The facility is used as a bridge across the Agawam River and to impound water for recreational purposes. The dam is about 285 ft. long and 16.5 ft. high. The dam has two spillways. The primary spillway is a concrete sluiceway located near the left abutment. A two bay stoplog structure located at the downstream end of the sluiceway controls flows through the facility. The secondary spillway is a 5 ft. dia. metal pipe culvert located on the right side of the dam. A stoplog structure having a weir length of 5.4 ft. is located on the upstream end of this spillway. An 18 in. dia. outlet passes through the dam near mid-point. Outflow is controlled at a 6 ft. by 8 ft. by 6 ft. upstream concrete intake structure. The dam and appurtenant works are judged to be in fair condition. There is no low level outlet for draining the pond. Seepage was noted at four locations. There was erosion of both the upstream and downstream embankments in the vicinity of the 18 in. dia. outlet pipe. Tree and brush growth is abundant. The test flood inflow is 3,420 cfs; the routed test flood outflow of 3,150 cfs would overtop the low point in the left abutment by about 2.0 ft. The spillways can pass about 7 percent of the routed test flood outflow without overtopping the low point in the left abutment.

Book excerpt: Bolivar Pond Dam is an earth embankment approximately 150 feet long. Both the upstream and downstream faces of the dam are vertical stone walls. Bolivar Street, which is approximately 40 feet wide, is located on the crest of the dam. The concrete overflow service spillway is located approximately 250 feet right of the dam. The drop-inlet closed conduit auxiliary spillway is located about 175 feet to the right of the service spillway. The dam appears to be in poor condition. Several indications of structural cracking are apparent on both the upstream wall and the downstream wall which is a wall of the Town of Canton DPW garage. About 5 gpm seepage was noted discharging from the downstream wall inside the Town of Canton garage. The dam does not have a reservoir drain system. The test flood inflow for the facility is approximately 9,410 cfs. The routed test flood outflow of 9.405 cfs overtops the dam by 2.9 feet. The spillway system is able to pass 115 cfs or about 1 percent of the routed test flood outflow without overtopping the dam.
