Book excerpt: The drainage area is 2.0 square miles and the reservoir has 825 acre-feet of storage capacity. The assessment of the dam is based on a visual inspection, past operational performance and hydraulic/hydrologic computations. The dam is judged to be in FAIR condition with several areas that require attention. These areas include seepage through the dam in the vicinity of the low-level discharge pipes and wet spots along the toe of the dam, vegetation on the embankments as well as along the toe of the dam and the inoperable status of the low-level discharge pipe. The test flood outflow will not overtop the dam and will leave 0.4 feet of freeboard.

Book excerpt: Upper Pond Dam is an earth embankment dam with a maximum height of 17 feet and a length of 390 feet. The dam embankment left of the spillway is approximately 10 feet in width, with 2 horizontal to 1 vertical upstream and downstream embankment slopes. The centrally located spillway is 72 feet in length and is a stone masonry structure. Stone masonry training walls approximately 5 feet in height are located at each side of the spillway. The outlet works consist of a concrete gate structure and an outlet channel. Based on the visual inspection, the Upper Pond Dam appears to be in poor condition. There was no movement or settlement of the crest observed. The horizontal alignment is good. The top of the outlet gate structure, however, is lower than the embankment crest. Some erosion was noted at the abutments, adjacent to the spillway section and adjacent to the outlet works. Trespassing on the slopes was not significant. Erosion scarps on the upstream slope extending 1-2 feet above waterline were noted. Several areas of broad shallow erosion on the upstream slope and upstream side of abutments were observed. Brush and many large trees (up to 2.5-ft.-dia.) with extensive root systems were noted on the slopes and crest of the dam. Standing water was observed in an area 35 feet downstream of the toe on the right side of the dam. The capacity of the spillway is inadequate to pass the 1/2 PMF test flood outflow of 5,195 CFS and would overtop the dam by about 0.9 feet. The spillway can pass about 33 percent of the test flood.

Book excerpt: The Paper Goods Pond Dam is a concrete and masonry structure. It is approximately 70 feet long, 30 feet high and has an average top width of 4 feet. The Paper Goods Pond Dam was probably constructed in 1920 with subsequent improvements in 1939. The present owner and operator of the dam is Sherwood Industries, Inc., which uses the pond for industrial water supply. Based on visual inspection and past operational performance, the dam is judged to be in FAIR condition. Seepage was noted through the southwest abutment and along the southern downstream channel wall. The 10 inch supply main presently has no control at the dam. The test flood for this dam is 1/2 the Probable Maximum Flood (PMF). The test flood has an inflow equal to 6415 cfs and an outflow discharge equal to 6400 cfs with a stillwater elevation of 125.0 which will overtop the dam by 5.5 feet. The maximum outflow capacity of the spillway with the water surface at the top of the dam is 1190 cfs, which is 19 percent of the test flood outflow.

Book excerpt: This dam consists of an earth embankment, and a concrete wall which extends from the embankments to the spillway on each end of the spillway. The earth embankment is 500 feet long, 8 feet wide at the top and 6.7 feet high, with a downstream slope of 2H:1V. The concrete spillway is located at the western end of the dam and is 40 feet long with 15 inch high permanently attached timber flashboards. Based on the visual inspection, and past operational performance, the dam is judged to be in POOR condition. There are large trees growing on the embankment. The concrete wall is severely cracked and spalled and has been exposed on the downstream side by erosion. Seepage is occurring through the wall and all along the downstream toe of the embankment. The test flood for this dam is the 100 year flood. The test flood has an inflow equal to 1810 cfs and an outflow discharge equal to 1800 cfs at a stillwater elevation of 233.1 which will overtop the dam by 1.0 foot. The maximum outflow capacity of the spillway with the water level at the top of the dam is 53 cfs, which is 3 percent of the test flood outflow.

Book excerpt: The 140 foot long dam is an earth embankment, the top of which, at elevation 154.5, is approximately 15 feet above the streambed of Belcher Brook. A drop inlet at a flow line elevation about 4.5 feet below the top of the dam, is the spillway facility. A wooden gate extending the full 7.5 foot depth of the structure is the low level outlet, however it is apparently stuck in a closed position. The inlet structure feeds an arched brick culvert which has an estimated chord length of 7 feet and an effective depth of approximately 3 feet, due to heavy siltation. A recent partial collapse of the brick culvert where it abuts the downstream low-level outlet headwall caused partial blockage of the culvert as well as an approximately six foot wide cavity and sloughing to the crest of the dam on the downstream slope. Based on the visual inspection at the site and past performance, the dam is judged to be in very poor condition. Evidence of instability was noted in the form of a collapse of the outlet conduit and a subsequent failure of the downstream slope of the dam. There are other areas requiring attention as well. Based upon the hydraulics computations, the spillway capacity is 180 cfs to the top of the dam, which is equivalent to 72% of the routed test flood outflow.

Book excerpt: The dam is a 205 foot long concrete gravity structure keyed into rock at both abutments. The top of the dam is typically 5.5 feet wide and approximately 25 feet above the bed of the Mattabesset River. The upstream face of the dam by visual inspection is vertical, while the downstream face is battered on an inclination of approximately 2 horizontal to 1 vertical based upon field measurements. The spillway is a concrete, broad crested compound weir of trapezoidal cross-section with a shallow bucket dissipator apron. The spillway crest is 3.0 feet below the top of the dam. There are two low level gates on the upstream face of the dam. One gate feeds the 42 inch cast iron low level outlet, and is operable. The other gate feeds a pipeline which was used to provide water to the downstream railroad line. This gate is inoperable and the present existence and condition of the pipeline is uncertain. There are three residential structures and a storage building located immediately downstream of the dam. Based upon the visual inspection at the site and past performance history, the dam appears to be in fair condition. No evidence of instability in the dam was observed. Downstream of the dam approximately 70 feet, the left channel wall is collapsed and at this point is in poor condition. There are some other areas requiring attention as well, in the form of minor maintenance or monitoring. Based upon our hydraulics computations, the spillway capacity is 1560 cubic feet per second (cfs), which is equivalent to 18% of the Test Flood.

Book excerpt: Bushy Hill Pond Dam is an earth embankment structure 265 feet in length with a maximum height of 29 feet. A stone spillway 20 feet in length is located at the right abutment of the dam. The upstream face of the dam is a vertical concrete wall. The dam crest and downstream embankment are grassed. The spillway is located at the right abutment and is 20 feet in length. A 12 inch blow-off pipe provides a low level outlet. Based on the visual inspection, Bushy Hill Pond Dam and its appurtenances are judged to be in poor condition. The crest of the dam appears to dip toward the upstream face. The vertical alignment is good. The face appears to bow slightly upstream and the concrete wall is cracked at many locations. The downstream slope is uneven and erosion has occurred along the toe. Large boulders were observed at the intersection of dam and spillway training wall on the left side of the spillway. Seepage was noted along the toe of the downstream slope. The stone masonry overflow spillway section has open joints; however, no movement or seepage was observed. The spillway discharge channel is in general good condition. Some sloughing of the channel embankment (right side) was noted about 20 feet below the spillway. A 12-inch diameter low level blow-off was operated during the site visit. The test flood would overtop the dam by 1.4 feet. The spillway capacity without overtopping is 140 CFS which is about 9 percent of the test flood outflow.

Book excerpt: The dam consists of a 400 foot long concrete spillway across the Farmington River with an adjacent hydroelectric generating powerhouse, and a 100 foot long butressed concrete transition dam spanning from the 70 foot long powerhouse to a 1050 foot long earth dike running along the pond shoreline. There are two low level sluices through the spillway section which are operated by hydraulic lifts in a chamber above the sluices. The sluices have an inlet elevation approximately 44.5 feet below the crest of the spillway. The 4 inlets to the turbines are approximately 34.5 feet below the crest of the spillway; the discharge flows to a tailrace channel cut into bedrock to the left of the spillway discharge channel. A fish ladder with an inlet about 1.5 feet below the spillway crest also discharges into the tailrace channel. All inlet gates are well maintained and operable. Based upon the visual inspection and past performance, the dam is judged to be in fair condition. No evidence of instability was observed in the dam or its appurtenances. The condition of the earth dike is good, however there are areas requiring attention. Based upon our hydraulics computations, the spillway capacity is 101,000 (cfs), which is equivalent to 51% of the routed Test Flood outflow.

Book excerpt: Paper Mill Pond consists of a 17 foot long concrete spillway and a 15 foot long concrete dam, all completely surrounded by buildings of Amerbelle Corporation. At top of a dam elevation, the dam impounds 90 acre-feet. Outlet works consist of a drawdown conduit of unknown size and twin 8-inch line for process water. Under normal conditions, the entire flow of the Hockanum River discharges over the spillway. This dam has a maximum height of 16.7 feet with the top of dam 5.5 feet above the spillway crest. The dam is in fair condition with some seepage from the face of dam and some deteriorated concrete. In addition to the operable outlet works, there is the 48-inch metal penstock that was originally used to supply water to the generator turbine. This outlet is plugged and the pipe partially filled and collapsed.

Book excerpt: The dam and dike are judged to be in poor condition. The crest of the dam is in poor condition with large vehicle ruts. A deep hole on the crest was observed in the vicinity of the service bridge. No movement or settlement of the crest was indicated and the vertical and horizontal alignment was generally good. The riprap on the upstream face has many gaps leaving the embankment unprotected. Numerous tree stumps were observed on the upstream face. The slopes are extensively overgrown with brush, grass and large trees. The downstream slope has an undulating surface in many locations. A considerable wet area is located along the downstream toe. Numerous small streams were noted carrying water from seeps eminating on the downstream face. The spillway is in very poor condition. The dike's upstream face is unprotected. Extensive vegetation and stumps exist on the upstream and downstream slopes. A large erosion gully approximately four feet deep has formed on the downstream slope. Seepage is evident along the majority of the downstream toe. A small scarp was observed along the downstream toe probably due to continued seepage. A small boil was observed approximately 20 feet downstream of the toe. The capacity of the spillway is inadequate to pass the one half PMF test flood outflow of 3206 CFS without overtopping the dam and dike. The test flood would overtop the dam by about 0.2 feet. The spillway is adequate to pass about 84 percent of the test flood outflow without overtopping the dam and dike.

Book excerpt: Mill Pond Dam is 220 feet in length, with a maximum height of 18 feet. The upstream face of dam is a vertical mortared stone masonry wall partially replaced in areas with concrete. The downstream face of the dam is a concrete wall approximately 12 feet in height and 4 feet wide. The remains of a factory foundation occupy the irregular shaped dam crest, 30 to 60 feet wide. The composition of the fill material is unknown. The spillway is 68 feet in length extending from the left abutment. Based on the visual inspection, the Mill Pond Dam appears to be in fair condition. Some settlement and cracking of the floor slab at the crest of the dam has occurred. The downstream concrete face appears to be in good condition. Downstream from the concrete portion of the dam a nearly level grassed area was observed. The grassed area indicated no visible seepage and was in generally good condition. The visible face of the spillway is in fair condition. A portion of the right spillway training wall had collapsed for a distance of approximately 18 feet. Most of the stone masonry blocks have been removed in this section and the embankment has been eroded back for a distance of approximately 8 feet. A cast iron drainage pipe is located adjacent to the end of the concrete training wall in this collapsed section. Other portions of the existing wall have been undermined causing masonry blocks to be removed. The outlet structure service gates have recently been replaced and are in good condition. The capacity of the spillway is inadequate to pass the 1/2 PMF test flood outflow of 8,070 CFS and would overtop the dam by 4.9 feet. The spillway is adequate to pass 15 percent of the test flood.

Book excerpt: Mill Pond Dam is an earth-covered, irregular natural rock formation 600 ft. long, with a top width varying from 10 to 20 ft. and a maximum height of 19 ft. The outlet for the dam is a natural rock weir spillway approximately 35 ft. wide, which is overpassed by a footbridge. The crest of the spillway is about 3 ft. below the lowest point on the dam crest. Based on visual inspection, the Mill Pond Dam is judged to be in good condition; however, during the inspection, there was a light snow cover of approximately 2 inches which may have obscured problems, such as erosion or seepage. A test flood of a 100 year frequency was selected in accordance with the Corps of Engineers' Guidelines. The calculated test flood inflow of 1,000 cfs results in a routed outflow of 990 cfs. With the water level at the top of the dam the spillway capacity is 575 cfs which is 58% of the outflow flood. The storage capacity of the Mill Pond is 52 ac.-ft. at the top of the dam.

Book excerpt: Rogers Pond Dam is a 231 foot long earth and vertical stone masonry dam with a maximum height of 9 feet. There is a 50 foot long concrete spillway near the center of the dam. The width of the dam varies from a minimum of 6 feet at the right spillway edge to 21 feet at the left abutment. The purpose of this dam is primarily recreational. The visual inspection of Rogers Pond Dam indicated that the dam is in fair condition. The inspection revealed that portions of the upstream masonry wall have been displaced at several locations. Numerous trees are growing on the left upstream embankment. Seepage was noted along the stone wall on both sides of the spillway and the ground was wet and soggy 25 feet downstream of the left side of the dam, and a large depression was observed just downstream of the wall along the right side of the dam. The storage at top of dam is 60 acre-feet. The spillway will discharge 500 cfs or 42% of the test flood with the pool level at the top of the dam. The peak test flood inflow is 1195 cfs, with a peak test flood outflow of 1140 cfs, which will overtop the dam by 0.6 feet.

Phase I Inspection Report written by CORPS OF ENGINEERS WALTHAM MA NEW ENGLAND DIV. and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The project, substantially reconstructed in 1967, has a total length of approximately 320 feet, consisting of an approximately 300 foot long embankment and a 20 foot long concrete spillway. The dam is approximately 23.5 feet in height above the streambed of Long Hill Brook and, with the pond level to the top of the dam, impounds approximately 250 acre-feet of water. The upstream slope is protected to the top of the dam by dumped rock riprap. The spillway is a concrete chute and is located near the right end of the dam. The low-level outlet facility is a 24 inch reinforced concrete pipe at the central portion of the embankment and is controlled from a concrete gatehouse on the dam. Based upon visual inspection and past performance, the project is judged to be in fair condition. No evidence of instability of the embankment or spillway was observed. However, there are items which require monitoring and/or maintenance, such as erosion of the spillway discharge channel and a stagnant water condition in the low-level outlet channel which does not allow a free flow of water from the toe drain pipes. Peak inflow to the reservoir at the 1/2 PMF is 850 cubic feet per second (cfs); peak outflow is 580 cfs with the lowest point along the top of the dam overtopped by 0.4 feet. The spillway capacity, with the reservoir level to the low point of the top of the dam, is 380 cfs, which is equivalent to 66% of the routed test flood outflow.

Book excerpt: Moulsons Pond Dam is a stone masonry dam approximately 80 feet long and 23 feet high. The spillway is L shaped with a concrete cap that extends almost the total length of the dam. A bridge spans over the river immediately downstream of the spillway. The top of road is the dam crest and the west bridge abutment is the west spillway abutment. There is a 2-foot high concrete abutment at the east end that is 8 feet below the top of the dam. At the west end of the dam there is a 6-foot diameter pipe that passes beneath the roadway into a sluiceway that goes to an old mill. There is no control for this sluiceway which is always open and the water discharges into the downstream channel. There is no low-level discharge pipe.
