Book Synopsis Productivity: International comparisons of economic growth by : Dale Weldeau Jorgenson
Download or read book Productivity: International comparisons of economic growth written by Dale Weldeau Jorgenson and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These two volumes present empirical studies that have permanently altered professional debates over investment and productivity as sources of postwar economic growth in industrialized countries. The distinctive feature of investment is that returns can be internalized by the investor. The most straightforward application of this idea is to investments that create property rights, but these volumes broaden the meaning of capital formation to include investments in education and training. International Comparisons of Economic Growth focuses on comparisons among industrialized countries. Although Germany and Japan are often portrayed as economic adversaries of the U.S., postwar experiences in all three countries support policies that give high priority to stimulating and rewarding capital formation. In the Asian model of growth exemplified by Japan investments in tangible assets and human capital are especially critical during periods of rapid growth.

Download or read book Telecom Nation written by Laurence B. Mussio and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2001 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mussio is a communications consultant who traces how Canada handled expansion in telecommunications and the arrival of the computer in the three critical decades following World War II. Like technological transformations in transportation and utilities, the spread of new communications systems forced governments to respond; in continental Europe and the UK, they asserted control and ownership of national telecommunication networks. In the US, private companies were permitted to manage systems and provide services. In Canada both models were adopted, and domestic hybrids combining both also flourished.Distributed in the US by Cornell University Services. c. Book News Inc.

Download or read book Demand for Money written by Lars Jonung and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The income velocity of money-an inverse measure of the demand for money balances-is the ratio of the money value of income to the average money stock that the public (excluding banks) holds in a given period. Why the magnitude of that ratio has changed over time is the subject of Michael D. Bordo and Lars Jonung's classic study, originally published as The Long-Run Behavior of the Velocity of Circulation. Supported by statistical data, econometric estimation techniques, and meticulous historical analysis, this work describes, in an international setting, how slow-moving economic, social, and political forces interact with the decisions households and firms make about how much money to hold. Annual time series of velocity for several countries from the late nineteenth century to the late twentieth century display a U-shaped pattern. Existing theories can explain each section of the velocity curve-the falling, flat, and rising parts-but the overall pattern is not consistent with any one theory. Here the authors put forth a comprehensive explanation for this behavior over time. Their theory is largely an extension of the approach of Knut Wicksell, the Swedish economist who stressed the role of substitution between monetary assets. This approach, which emphasizes institutional variables, is incorporated into the arguments for the traditional long-run money demand (velocity) function. Four types of empirical evidence strongly support the authors' theory: econometric studies of the long-run velocity function for several countries; a cross section study of approximately eighty countries in the postwar period; a case study of the Swedish monetization process in the fifty years before World War I; and an examination of the time series properties of velocity. Demand for Money suggests that institutional factors, as opposed to real income, play a greater role in velocity than previously thought. And these institutional factors have a major impact on monetary policy. This is a book that will prove of great value to economists, monetary strategists, and policymakers.

Book Synopsis An Economic History of Ireland Since Independence by : Andy Bielenberg
Download or read book An Economic History of Ireland Since Independence written by Andy Bielenberg and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-05-20 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a cogent summary of the economic history of the Irish Free State/Republic of Ireland. It takes the Irish story from the 1920s right through to the present, providing an excellent case study of one of many European states which obtained independence during and after the First World War. The book covers the transition to protectionism and import substitution between the 1930s and the 1950s and the second major transition to trade liberalisation from the 1960s. In a wider European context, the Irish experience since EEC entry in 1973 was the most extreme European example of the achievement of industrialisation through foreign direct investment. The eager adoption of successive governments in recent decades of a neo-liberal economic model, more particularly de-regulation in banking and construction, has recently led the Republic of Ireland to the most extreme economic crash of any western society since the Great Depression.
