Book excerpt: Excerpt from National Ideals and Race-Regeneration Men once believed in, and sought, a City of God, and built their cities on earth according to a pattern in the heavens. The nations of Europe, and notably our own, were founded in a vivid consciousness of the Divine. The nation was, no less than Israel's, God's chosen; and the king held his authority of divine right, symbolised by the sacred unction. But now the vision of heavenly things has faded, and a nation is merely a conglomerate Of people occupying a common country, trying to govern itself by a majority of votes. Its main Object is to ex press what the majority desire; and as the majority de sire money, comfort, pleasure, and such-like earthly things, the national ideal insensibly sinks to a base and debasing earthiness. In their several ways, the authors of these New Tracts for the Times, each being alone responsible for his or her own contribution, adopt this bracing and hopeful attitude towards the transcendent prob lems which it is the object of the promoters to date. There is the inner life of the nation, its growth and development as a body of men and women whose lot is cast to live together within the borders of a single organized State and there is the outer life of the nation, its relations to other peoples, and the part it is to play on the stage of the world's history. The two cannot, indeed, be separated the inner life reacts on the outer, and the outer on the inner. But they can be conveniently discussed apart. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Problem of Race-Regeneration These Tracts might have been called "New Tracts for New Times," since they interpret the signs and prophecies of a new world in the making, demanding the application of loftier ideals, more widely embracing principles, and surer methods of advance than have hitherto prevailed. They do not merely deplore and combat the manifest evils of the past and the present changing conditions, but reveal the foundations of a richer civilisation. The era of destructive criticism, of improving material environment alone, of lavish care for a short season of the unfit merely to turn them adrift at the critical age, of reliance upon forms and drugs, hospitals and penitentiaries, police and prisons and upon unfettered liberty to correct its own abuses, is mercifully passing away. We are living in a transition period, but nearer the future than the past. The wonderful nineteenth century seems already to have become history, and the first decade of the twentieth century has closed. The new spirit of the age, which appeared in wondrous guise on the horizon at the watch of the centuries, is becoming articulate. It is evident to all who possess the historic vision that we are living in the twilight before the dawn. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Conservation of National Ideals At a representative meeting not long since, where restriction of immigration was considered, the greater number of the speakers were men who had themselves emigrated to this country from various European states and were but naturalized citizens. When one considers that the vast majority of the population of the United States is made up of naturalized immigrants, or citizens whose parents were immigrants, there is great danger that true American ideals will be lost sight of, and that the standards by which our forefathers founded American institutions may be lowered or changed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Man's Birthright America, said Walt Whitman, has set forth upon the most tremendous task ever conceived by man; a task indeed beyond the scope of any man's thought. Urged on by the inner destiny-forces of the race, she is attempting to realize the race-ideal of a true Democracy. To accomplish her errand she must be nerved and vitalized by the highest and deepest of ideals; for hers is a world-battle with all the relentless foes of progress. What must these highest and deepest ideals be in order that her mighty task may be accomplished, and posterity fall heir to that which man has striven to attain through the ages? Has the East anything to offer the West? Have European nations discovered any definite ideals worthy of emulation? Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Trend of the Races Again a new home mission study book is added to the lengthening series of such books issued by the Council of Women for Home Missions and the Missionary Edu cation Movement. Their purpose primarily is to lead Christian people to the active practise of that cardinal principle of Christ, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. Obviously, if our neighbor is to be loved, he must be known. We must realize something of his racial mind and spirit, his handicaps, his achievements, his capacities, his horizon, his goals. Our seeking to know him must be on the basis of the broadest sympathy. In the friend liest and most helpful spirit we should sincerely desire to understand him in the place where he is and to appre hend something of the road by which he came and the direction of his highest and best aspirations, that we may, so far as we can, make it possible for him to attain his best in our common civilization. We should at the same time quite as earnestly seek to know ourselves in respect to our limitations, achievements, and goals in the building of the social order. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of eugenics and racial nationalism in Central and Southeast Europe is a neglected topic of analysis in contemporary scholarship. Moreover, national historiographies in Central and Southeast Europe have either marginalized eugenics and racial nationalism or deemed them incompatible with their respective national traditions. Accordingly, this volume has a two-fold ambition: to excavate the hitherto unknown eugenic movements in Central and Southeast Europe and to explain their relationship with racism, nationalism and anti-Semitism. On the one hand, the historiographic perspective substantiated in this volume connects developments in the history of racial anthropology, genetics and eugenics with political ideologies such as racial nationalism and anti-Semitism; on the other hand, it contests the 'Sonderweg' approach adopted by scholars dealing these phenomena in Central and Southeast Europe by arguing that concerns with eugenics and race were as widely disseminated in these regions as they were in Western Europe and North America.
