Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Forests of Wyoming: Wood, Water, Forage, Wild Life, Recreation Only about 16 percent of the State of Wyo ming is forest land. Nevertheless, this forest area of million acres produces timber, water, recreation, and grazing that are very important to the State and the Nation. Some of these products or uses have been important for a long time. However, recreation is only beginning to come into its own. The grazing load is about all the forests can support at the present time, but there is a great Oppor tunity to expand the other uses. In consider ing the timber resource under present and future conditions of forest management, tim ber use cannot be considered apart from the demands on the forest for water, recreation, and grazing. Few acres, if any, can be man aged for one use alone. For this reason the demands of water, recreation, and grazing uses are discussed in addition to the timber resource the principal topic of this report.to the Union Pacific Railway in its construe tion of the first transcontinental railroad through Wyoming in 1867-69. During the next several decades as railroads fanned out through the West, tie hacks hewed millions of ties from Wyoming trees. During this period timber cut in Wyoming reached a peak that was not exceeded until the late l95o's. The tie hack with his broadax finally gave way to the greater efficiency of sawmills. This did not occur rapidly. Even as late as 1927, most of the ties were hand hewed at Fox Park and other big tie operations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Range Investigations, Bighorn National Forest, Wyoming, Vol. 1 The Bighorn National Forest is located in north central wyoming, being bounded on the north by the Montana state line (fig. The Forest is entirely within the Big Horn Mountains, although this mountain range extends A0 to 50 miles south and 10 miles north of the Forest boundary. As a result, not more than an estimated two - thirds of the mountain range is within the Forest. South of the Forest, the Big Horn Mountains join the high eastawest range of the Bridger and Owl Creek Mountains. North of the Forest boundary, the Big Horn Mountains end at the canyon of the Big Horn River, north of which the same uplift is continued in the Pryor Mountains, a range of moderate elevation which extends but a short distance (q). In general, the eastern edge of the Forest follows along the face of the mountains, but the western boundary often is above feet on sedimentary formations sloping toward the Big Horn Basin. Underlying the soil mantle and in places outcropping on the surface are both granitic and sedimentary rocks. The granites are extensively exposed in the high mountain areas where the sedimentary layers have been entirely cut away and glacial activity is clearly evident (q). The sedimentary layers consist of sand stone, limestone, shales, and loosely consolidated beds of gravel and sand (iq). The oldest of these sedimentary deposits and the one lying directly on the granite is the Deadwood formation of the Cambrian system. Because of the soft shales in this formation, it has often weathered in long slopes and rounded knobs Bald Mountain is an example (fl). Many of the treeless and brushfree openings or parks on the Medicine Wheel and Tongue Districts (fig. 2) occur on this formation. Sedimentary formations are particularly common on the Tongue, Medicine Wheel, and Paintrock Districts. The other three districts (fig. 1) are characterized for the most part by exposed red and gray granites and soil derived from this parent material. On the Buffalo District, in particular, are found extensive brushfree parks on preglacial deposits of granitic debris (é). He has known the National Forests from boyhood and, in fact, worked one summer for the Forest Service. An all-american football player at Tulane University, Orval returned to Idaho State College, now Idaho State University, for his degree. Bea, Orval's wife, is from neighboring Montana, where she grew up a relatively indoor type. I didn't know what out-of-doors meant until I met Orval. She now spends most of her leisure time outdoors in the Intermountain Region. Our trailer is home for me practically every weekend from the time school ends until it starts in the fall. Dale is sixteen, a member of the high school golf team and managerlof the football team. He'll hunt big game with his father this year for the first time, using his own rifle. In selecting the plants for testing, those were chosen that promised well, and had proved their value in other places. We have found that some plants reported as being hardy in places of lower winter tempera tures than this station are not hardy here, because Of the high alti tude Of this place, and the resulting short growing season. There are, no doubt, many hardy plants suitable for ornamental purposes which have not yet been tested here. We have chosen those that gave promise Of being hardy and adapted to the conditions under which they Were to be grown. Much work is yet to be done in gathering plants and testing them for hardiness. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Petrified Forests of Yellowstone: Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho Greatly magnified, this bit of an ancient Yellowstone tree typifies the silent records stored in Yellowstone's little known fossil forests. Annual growth rings representing years in past eons contrast with today's pine needles fallen on the petrified wood's exposed surface. Magic. You look at Yellowstone National Park's fantastic features and see magic. No matter how much you understand the what, where, when, how, and why of this wonderland, its magical qualities remain. Our minds may grasp the immense age and processes geologists detect in the earth's crust, but our feelings remain paramount. Confronted with geysers, mud pots, fumaroles, and majestic water falls, a part of us still tips its hat to magic. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wolves, in Relation to Stock, Game, and the National Forest Reserves By reference to the map on page 7 it will be seen that the present distribution of wolves includes most of the forest reserves Of the western United States, except those of California. The natural infer ence would be that these forest reserves serve as breeding grounds. From which the wolves raid the surrounding country, killing. Stock and retreating again to forest cover. Such is not the case, however. As will be apparent from a careful study of the map of 20 breeding dens in the Green River and Wind River basins of Wyoming. In Plates I, II, and III are shown wolf dens and their location in this region. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
