Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Future of Nursing explores how nurses' roles, responsibilities, and education should change significantly to meet the increased demand for care that will be created by health care reform and to advance improvements in America's increasingly complex health system. At more than 3 million in number, nurses make up the single largest segment of the health care work force. They also spend the greatest amount of time in delivering patient care as a profession. Nurses therefore have valuable insights and unique abilities to contribute as partners with other health care professionals in improving the quality and safety of care as envisioned in the Affordable Care Act (ACA) enacted this year. Nurses should be fully engaged with other health professionals and assume leadership roles in redesigning care in the United States. To ensure its members are well-prepared, the profession should institute residency training for nurses, increase the percentage of nurses who attain a bachelor's degree to 80 percent by 2020, and double the number who pursue doctorates. Furthermore, regulatory and institutional obstacles-including limits on nurses' scope of practice-should be removed so that the health system can reap the full benefit of nurses' training, skills, and knowledge in patient care. In this book, the Institute of Medicine makes recommendations for an action-oriented blueprint for the future of nursing.

This book was released on 2017 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In the United States, many states have revised their nurse practice acts to include provisions that promote full practice authority for nurse practitioners. Such revisions reflect the expanded qualifications and abilities of nurse practitioners and provide a mechanism by which to better utilize the full scope of nurse practitioner services that are available to address growing demands for access to health care. Although the research literature is beginning to describe strategies that states have used to successfully achieve regulatory changes to full practice authority for nurse practitioners, no published study identified in the literature has explored how stakeholders within a state decide on the appropriate time to pursue such legislation. This is the first known study to use an embedded single case study design, guided by the Kingdon (2011) policy stream model, to provide a detailed account of how stakeholders for nurse practitioner full practice authority in one stated determined the appropriate time to pursue legislative changes to nurse practitioner scope of practice regulations. Qualitative data analysis was guided by Yin (2014), and used theoretical propositions, the development of a case description, pattern matching, and explanation building. Findings from the study addressed the research question by revealing four themes which included the components considered by the study state's stakeholders as they determined the appropriate time to pursue legislation to change nurse practitioner scope of practice regulations. Study findings can be used as a reference to increase the competency with which the nursing profession pursues the policy process for full practice authority legislation, and can be used by stakeholders in other states as a guide for the assessment components to consider when making decisions to pursue related legislation."--Abstract from author supplied metadata.

Book excerpt: For a time, the archaic medical and nursing practice acts made overt role expansion for nurses difficult. Although a variety of formal and informal coping mechanisms evolved to work around the laws, the laws remained a significant barrier to the open use of nurses in extended roles. This situation is now rapidly changing as state laws are revised. A variety of approaches are being used, and it is important that nurses and legislators understand the implications of the differing methods. - Introduction.

Book excerpt: As the only book of its kind, this publication provides students, clinicians, researchers, ministries of health, and others with a valuable, thorough, and focused understanding of the development of the nurse practitioner (NP) and nurse anesthetist (NA), two advanced practice nursing roles which have improved access to care and healthcare outcomes as bilateral role development has progressed internationally. As the two roles have significant clinical differences, the book will appraise each role separately within two sections utilizing different approaches. After a thorough platform of defining and describing each role, including history and origins, education, practice, regulation, and leadership, the book guides by example, utilizing unique country case studies divided by WHO regions as exemplars for international role development as well as an outlook for the future of advanced practice nursing on the global stage. The book expands on the tenets and principles as outlined in the ICN Guidelines on Advanced Practice Nursing for Nurse Practitioners (2020) and Nurse Anesthetists (2021), providing the reader with an internationally vetted and accepted comprehension of the roles, guiding and inspiring future role development to improve global health care.

Book excerpt: The State Guide to The Legal Scope of Practice for Nursing is the definitive reference to the legal compliance issues relevant to midwives, clinical nurse specialists, nurse practitioners, R.N.s and licensed practical nurses, and the insurers who monitor and pay for nursing services. This annual guide's state-by-state breakdowns of specific practice guidelines clearly outlines what services these five levels of nurses can and can not legally deliver to their patients, and assists insurance organizations in determining what services to offer (or stop offering) to their constituents. Well organized and easy to understand, The State Guide to The Legal Scope of Practice for Nursing is the must-have reference for anyone who wishes to effectively navigate the legal quagmire that has become synonymous with today's healthcare industry.
