Book excerpt: Examination of available documents and visual inspections of the dam did not reveal conditions which constitute an immediate hazard to human life or property. However, the dam has some deficiencies that need to be evaluated and remedied. The spillway is adjudged to be seriously inadequate and the dam is assessed as unsafe, nonemergency. It should be noted that Eaton Brook Reservoir Dam is located approximately 2.2 miles upstream of Clayton's Dam on Eaton Brook. Its spillway has also been adjudged to be seriously inadequate and the dam assessed as unsafe, nonemergency. Due to the appreciable size of Eaton Reservoir, the breaching of that dam would undoubtedly have a serious effect on Clayton's Dam. Similarly, the failure of either of these dams would have a serious effect on two small dams also on Eaton Brook, located 0.5 miles and 1.7 miles downstream of Clayton's Dam.

Book excerpt: This report provides information and analysis on the physical condition of the dam as of the report date. Information and analysis are based on visual inspection of the dam by the performing organization. Examination of available documents and visual inspections of the dam did not reveal conditions which constitute an immediate hazard to human life or property. However, the dam has some deficiencies that need to be evaluated and remedied. Using the Corps of Engineers' screening criteria for the initial review of spillway adequacy, it has been determined that the embankment would be overtopped by all storms exceeding 21 percent of the Probable Maximum Flood (PMF). Dam overtopping, the resulting erosion of the embankment and hence, dam breaching would cause water surface levels downstream to reach depths which would pose significant danger to residents. Therefore, the spillway is adjudged to be seriously inadequate and the dam is assessed as unsafe, nonemergency. The classification 'unsafe' applied to a dam because of a seriously inadequate spillway is not meant to connote the same degree of emergency as would be associated with an 'unsafe' classification applied for a structural deficiency. It does not mean that there appears to be a serious deficiency in spillway capacity and if a severe storm were to occur, overtopping and failure of the dam could take place, significantly increasing the hazard to life downstream of the dam. Flaherty and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the basis of the visual examination, there were no signs of impending structural failure or other conditions which would warrant urgent remedial action; however, a number of serious deficiencies were noted. Since there were no drawings available, the evaluation of this dam is based primarily on visual examination, limiting measurements at the site, approximate hydraulic and hydrologic computations, and application of engineering judgement. It is recommended that the following additional investigations be performed by a registered professional engineer engaged by the owner: (1) The present embankment sections adjacent to the spillway represent a potential hazard to the dam with respect to possible erosion, piping and/or failure of the dam during high reservoir levels. Therefore, regrade this to make the embankment section conform to the embankment cross sections elsewhere. In addition, adequately protect these sections from spillway outflows; and (2) Investigate the seepage that was observed near the downstream toe of slope, including observation during high and low reservoir levels, evaluate the cause and recommend appropriate remedial measures.

However, the dam has some deficiencies that need to be evaluated and remedied. Using the Corps of Engineers' Screening Criteria for the initial review of spillway adequacy, it has been determined that the embankment would be overtopped by the outflow resulting from all storms exceeding 13 percent of the Probable Maximum Flood (PMF). (Author).

Information and analysis are based on visual inspection of the dam by the performing organization. Examination of available documents and a visual inspection of the dam did not reveal conditions which constitute an immediate hazard to human life or property. However, the dam has some deficiencies that need to be evaluated and remedied. Using the Corps of Engineers' screening criteria for the initial review of spillway adequacy, it has been determined that the embankment would be overtopped by the outflow resulting from all storms exceeding 17 percent of the Probable Maximum Flood (PMF) when the flashboards are in place and the overtopping discharge from the embankment portion of Norwich Reservoir No. 2 Dam (NY 349) is included as an inflow hydrograph.

Download or read book National Dam Safety Program. Higinbotham Brook Watershed Project (Inventory Number NY 703). Oswego River Basin, Madison County, New York. Phase I Inspection Report written by George Koch and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report provides information and analysis on the physical condition of the dam as of the report date. The examination of documents and visual inspection of the Higinbotham Brook dams and appurtenant structures did not reveal conditions which constitute a hazard to human life or property. The total discharge capacity of the spillways is adequate for the Probable Maximum Flood (PMF). The following remedial actions are required during this construction season: (1) Repair the erosion areas on and in the vicinity of Dam 1. Seed and mulch all unprotected areas to establish erosion resistant vegetation; (2) Repair the eroded area in the downstream channel; (3) Periodically monitor the slopes in the reservoir area and repair as required; (4) Provide a program of seeding and mulching of all earth surfaces on the dams and in the reservoir area to establish erosion protection material. If vegetation cannot resist long term erosion action, an alternate method may be required; and (5) Provide a program of periodic inspection and maintenance of the dams and appurtenances. This program must include yearly operation and lubrication of the reservoir drain system.

Stetson and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report provides information and analysis on the physical condition of the dam as of the report date. Information and analysis are based on visual inspection of the dam by the performing organization. The examination of documents and visual inspection of the Marcy Reservoir Dam did not reveal conditions which constitute an immediate hazard to human life or property. The dam, however, has a number of problem areas which require further investigation and remedial work. It is, therefore, recommended that within 6 months of notification to the Owner, a detailed hydrologic/hydraulic investigation of the structure should be undertaken to more accurately determine the site specific characteristics of the watershed and their effect upon the overtopping potential of the dam. The results of these investigations will determine the appropriate remedial measures which will be required to achieve a spillway capacity adequate to discharge the outflow from at least the 1/2 PMF. In the interim, a detailed emergency action plan must be developed and implemented during periods of unusually heavy precipitation. Also, around-the-clock surveillance of the structure must be provided during these periods.

Download or read book National Dam Safety Program. Stump Pond Dam (Inventory Number N.Y. 746), Susquehanna River Basin, Cortland County, New York. Phase I Inspection Report written by George Koch and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Visual inspection of this dam and engineering analyses revealed that the poor condition of the dam creates a hazard to human life and property. As a result of these determinations, the dam has been assessed as unsafe, non-emergency. One of the spillway sections has failed completely, creating a large void in the dam. The other spillway channel is in poor condition, having cracks in the concrete and several small voids. The earth fill upstream of the dam completely blocks the failed spillway section and partially blocks the other section. Due to the serious nature of the deficiencies, it is recommended that within 30 days of the notification to the owner that the dam has been assessed as unsafe, repair work on the structural deficiencies should be commenced. These repairs should be completed within 3 months. Within 3 months of the notification of the owner, a detailed hydrologic/hydraulic investigation should be commenced. This investigation should accurately define the site specific characteristics of the watershed and determine appropriate mitigating measures to be taken in response to the seriously inadequate spillway capacity. These measures should be completed within 1 year of the date of notification.

Book excerpt: This report provides information and analysis on the physical condition of the dam as of the report date. Information and analysis are based on visual inspection of the dam by the performing organization. Examination of available documents and a visual inspection of the dam did not reveal conditions which constitute an immediate hazard to human life or property. However, the dam has some deficiencies that need to be evaluated and remedied. Hydrologic/hydraulic analyses performed in accordance with the Corps of Engineers' Recommended Guidelines for Safety Inspection of Dams indicate that the principal spillway and the emergency spillway would pass 100 percent of the outflow from the Probable Maximum Flood (PMF) without overtopping the dam. Therefore, the combined spillway capacity is adjudged to be adequate. (Author).

Using the Corps of Enginners' screening criteria for the initial review of spillway adequacy, it has been determined that the dam would be overtopped by all storms exceeding 29 percent of the Probable Maximum Flood (PMF) with the flashboards in place and 30 percent without them in place. Dam overtopping, the resulting instability of the overflow spillway and hence, dam breaching would cause water surface levels downstream to reach depths which would pose significant danger to residents.
