Book excerpt: The Pine Creek Dam consists of an earth embankment approximately 1130 feet long with a maximum height of about 33 feet. As built, the crest of the dam was 60 feet wide with a 2 horizontal to 1 vertical sslope on both the upstream and downstream faces. Over the years, significant fill has been placed on the downstream side of the embankment, increasing the crest width to 300 to 400 feet. A two-lane roadway crosses the crest of the dam. Near the left abutment (looking downstream) the side slope of the spillway discharge channel defines the toe of the present embankment. However, for the remaining major portion of the embankment, no discernible demarcation exists between the embankment and the natural ground that can be identified as the toe of the embankment. Fill placed on the downstream side of theembankment gradually merges to the right abutment. The flood discharge facilities for the dam consist of a combined primary and emergency spillway located near the left abutment. The spillway structures include an ogee overflow section, circular arc in plane view, which discharges into a rectangular concrete discharge channel. A single-span highway bridge crosses the spillway discharge channel, approximately 70 feet downstream from the crest of the overflow section. The crest of theogee overflow section of the spillway is located at an elevation approximately 10 feet below the low point on the crest of the dam.

Book excerpt: Sunrise Lake Dam is a homogeneous earthfill embankment 478 feet long and 27 feet high at its maximum section. The embankment has a curved alignment. A concrete chute spillway is located near the right abutment of the top of the. The approach channel is the reservoir area. The ogee crest is 105 feet long and 7.25 feet lower than the design elevation of the dam. Based on visual inspection, available records, calculations, past operational performance, and according to criteria established for these studies, Sunrise Lake Dam is judged to be in good condition. The spillway capacity is rated as adequate. The spillway can pass the Probable Maximum Flood (PMF) without overtopping of the dam. The headwall at the conduit outlet is tilted and is considered to be unsatisfactory. In the absence of stability computations showing that an adequate factor of safety exists, the downstream slope is considered to have a marginal factor of safety because of the steepness of the slope.

Book excerpt: Wolf Creek Dam consists of an earth embankment approximately 1050 feet long with a maximum height of 34 feet from the downstream invert of the outlet works conduit and a crest width of 40 feet. Wolf Creek Dam is one of the three dams which impound Lake Rene. The other two dams are Galion Bay Dam, located at the south side of Lake Rene, and Lake Rene Dam, located on the east side of the reservoir. Lake Rene Dam, Which was constructed in 1955, was the original dam at the site. Wolf Creek Dam and Galion Bay Dam were constructed in 1971 in conjunction with the enlargement of Lake Rene. The flood discharge facilities for Lake Rene consist of primary and emergency spillways associated with Wolf Creek and Galion Bay dams. The Wolf Creek Dam flood discharge facilities are comprised of a drop inlet primary spillway located at the center of the embankment and an emergency spillway on the left abutment (looking downstream). The primary spillway structures consist of a single-stage reinforced concrete riser, a 36-inch-diameter reinforced concrete conduit, and a plunge pool at the downstream end of the outlet pipe. The emergency spillway is an 130-foot-wide trapezoidal earth channel excavated into the left abutment.

Book excerpt: Based on a visual inspection, operational history, and available engineering data, Heritage Reservation Dam is considered to be in excellent condition. The size classification of the facility is intermediate and the hazard classification is considered to be high. In accordance with the recommended guidelines, the Spillway Design Flood (SDF) is considered to be the PMF (Probable Maximum Flood). Results of the hydrologic and hydraulic analysis indicate that the facility is capable of passing and/or storing the PMF without overtopping the dam or dike. Consequently, the spillway is considered adequate.

Book excerpt: Based on a visual inspection, past performance, and available engineering data, the facility is considered to be in good condition. The size classification of the facility is intermediate and the hazard classification is considered to be high. The emergency spillway is capable of discharging the peak inflow resulting from a storm of PMF intensity and is, therefore, considered adequate. It is recommended that the owner: (a) Repair the damaged pond drain gate control and replace the missing manhole cover atop the service spillway riser. Consideration should be given to redesigning the gate control mechanism to protect it from future vandalism. (b) Consult with the U.S.D.A., Soil Conservation Service, to assess the erosion on the upstream slope in the area of the service spillway riser and implement any remedial measures deemed necessary. (c) Curtail the unauthorized vehicular travel across the embankment and repair and reseed any damaged (bare) areas. If control of unauthorized travel is not practical, some provision should be made to protect the embankment from rutting and erosion by placing a layer of gravel or stone across the crest. (d) Develop a formal operation and maintenance manual to ensure the continued proper care of the facility. In addition, a formal warning system should be implemented which provides detailed procedures to protect the lives and property of downstream residents. Included in the plan should be provisions for around-the-clock surveillance of the facility during periods of unusually heavy percipitation.

The recommended Spillway Design Flood (SDF) for the size and the hazard classification of the dam varies between the 100-year flood and the 1/2 Probable Maximum Flood (PMF). Based on the criteria and the downstream conditions, the SDF is the 1/2 PMF. The spillway will pass the PMF with 0.5 foot of freeboard. The spillway capacity is rated as adequate. No stability problems were evident for the embankment. None of the observed deficiencies at the dam were considered an immediate hazard.

Book excerpt: Storage Dam consists of an earth embankment approximately 500 feet long with a maximum height of 36 feet from the downstream toe and a crest width of approximately 15 feet. The appurtenant structures of the dam consist of a combined primary and emergency spillway located on the left abutment (looking downstream) and outlet works near the right abutment. Based on the evaluation of the existing conditions, the condition of Storage Dam is considered to be good. Numerous seeps were observed along the left abutment, but these seeps are not considered to be a threat to the integrity of the embankment. However, a slump and an associated wet area were observed along the toe of the dam near the left abutment. This condition should be investigated and necessary repairs performed. The flood discharge capacity of the Storage Dam spillway was evaluated according to the recommended procedure and it was found to be 40 percent of the probable maximum flood (PMF) without overtopping the embankment. Therefore, according to the recommended criteria, the flood discharge capacity of the dam is classified to be inadequate.

Book excerpt: Lake Walter Dam is located on Spring Run, approximately one mile upstream of its confluence with Meshoppen Creek in Springville Township, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania. The condition of Lake Walter Dam is considered to be good. The only significant condition noted which requires further attention is the lack of erosion protection in the emergency spillway discharge channel. The swampy condition at the toe of the dam is not considered to be significant at this time; however, the condition should be monitored to document if seepage is developing.

Phase I Inspection Report written by KIMBALL (L ROBERT) AND ASSOCIATES EBENSBURG PA. and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Chambers Dam appears to be in poor condition and poorly maintained. Erosion of the upstream slope has reduced the embankment crest to a width of 4 feet. Minor seepage was observed on the downstream slope of the dam, and a wet area was observed immediately beyond the toe of the dam. Brush and trees litter the downstream slope of the dam. No determination could be made as to the actual condition of the drainline culvert through the embankment. No determination could be made as to the condition or type of upstream closure on the culvert or whether the control is operable. The spillway located at the right abutment of the dam is in a deteriorating condition. Erosion exists along the right outside edge of the spillway wingwall. If the erosion is left unchecked, the potential for failure of the spillway and dam exists. The Chambers Dam is a high hazard-small size dam. The recommended Spillway Design Flood (SDF) for a dam of this size and classification is in the range of 1/2 PMF to PMF. Based on the downstream potential for loss of life and property damage, the spillway design flood has been selected as the PMF. The spillway and reservoir are capable of controlling less than 1% of the PMF without overtopping the embankment low spot.
