Book excerpt: Hosensack No. 4 Dam is a masonry structure with an upstream embankment. The dam has a maximum height of about 32 feet and a length of 310 feet. A 175-foot long overflow spillway is located about 100 feet from the right abutment near the center of the structure and is capped with concrete in the masonry portion. A 24-inch diameter reinforced concrete drain pipe is located in the non-overflow portion of the dam about 3.5 feet left of the spillway section. Discharge through the pipe is controlled with stop planks in a drainage tower approximately 15 feet downstream from the intake. A review of the results of the hydrologic and hydraulic analyses indicates that the spillway is able to pass the Spillway Design Flood (SDF) without the dam being overtopped; therefore, the spillway is considered 'Adequate'. Based on visual observation and a review of the information obtained from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Resources, Hosensack No. 4 Dam appears to be in poor condition.

Book excerpt: Dam G is a homogeneous earthfill embankment with a concrete core-wall. The embankment is 490 feet long and 19 feet high at maximum section. There are two outlet works at the dam. The first outlet works, which is near the right end of the embankment, consists of a concrete intake structure, two 24-inch diameter cast-iron pipes, and a valve house. This outlet works is connected to the water supply system. The second outlet works, which is near the left end of the dam, is similar to the first except it consists of a single 24-inch diameter pipe. The second outlet works provides the emergency drawdown capability. The concrete chute spillway is at the left abutment of the dam. Its crest is 3.0 feet below the design elevation of the top of the dam and is 75 feet long. The approach channel is short and concrete paved. The exit channel is a continuation of the chute. A bridge extends across the spillway crest. It is supported by two piers.

Considering the size and hazard classification of the dam, the recommended Spillway Design Flood (SDF) varies between the 1/2 Probable Maximum Flood (PMF) and the PMF. The 1/2 PMF was, in this case, selected as the SDF. The spillway and reservoir, under existing conditions, will pass approximately 19 percent of the PMF before overtopping of the dam occurs. The spillway is, therefore, rated as inadequate.

Book excerpt: Based on visual inspection, operational history, and hydrologic/hydraulic analysis, the dam is considered to be in fair condition. The size classification of the facility is intermediate and its hazard classification is considered to be high. In accordance with the recommended guidelines, the Spillway Design Flood (SDF) for the facility is the PMF (Probable Maximum Flood). Results of the hydrologic and hydraulic analysis indicate the facility will pass and/or store only about 20 percent of the PMF prior to embankment overtopping. A breach analysis indicates that failure under 1/2 PMF conditions could lead to increased downstream damage and potential for loss of life. Thus, based on screening criteria provided in the recommended guidelines, the spillway is considered to be seriously inadequate and the facility unsafe, non-emergency.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The visual inspection and review of available design and construction data indicate that Quakake Dam is in fair condition. The limited spillway capacity is the primary deficiency which causes concern for the safety of this facility. The dam in its present condition is considered to be unsafe, non-emergency. In accordance with the guidelines provided, the spillway design flood (SDF) ranges between 1/2 the PMF to the full PMF. Based on the size of dam, the SDF selected was 1/2 the PMF. The hydrologic and hydraulic computations indicate that the combination of reservoir storage and spillway discharge capacity will pass only 9% of the PMF prior to overtopping the embankment. Overtopping the dam could cause failure, which would lead to a significant increase in downstream loss of life and property damage. Therefore, the spillway for Quakake Dam is considered to be seriously inadequate.

Book excerpt: Based on criteria established for these studies, Lake Watawga Dam is judged to be unsafe, nonemergency, because the spillway capacity is seriously inadequate. The recommended Spillway Design Flood (SDF) for the size and hazard classification of the dam varies from 1/2 the Probable Maximum Flood (PMF) to the PMF. Based on the criteria and the downstream conditions, the selected SDF is the PMF. Based on existing conditions, the spillway will pass about 14 percent of the PMF before overtopping of the dam occurs. It is judged that the dam would fail during the PMF. Failure of the dam would increase the hazard for loss of life downstream. As a whole, the dam is judged to be in fair condition. Deficiencies exist that are considered to be indicative of potential stability problems for the spillway. There is no functional outlet works at the dam. Maintenance at the dam is inadequate.

Book excerpt: Based on a visual inspection, operational history, and hydrologic/hydraulic analysis, the dam is considered to be in good condition. The size classification of the facility is small and the hazard classification is considered to be high. In accordance with the recommended guidelines, the Spillway Design Flood (SDF) ranges between the 1/2 PMF (Probable Maximum Flood) and the PMF. Since the facility is classified near the lower bounds of the small category, the SDF is considered to be the 1/2 PMF. Results of hydrologic and hydraulic analyses indicate the facility will pass and/or store approximately 40 percent of the PMF prior to embankment overtopping at the low area in the embankment crest (elevation 1177.4). Breach analysis indicates that failure under less than 1/2 PMF conditions could lead to increased downstream damage and potential for loss of life. Thus, based on screening criteria provided by the recommended guidelines, the spillway is considered to be seriously inadequate and the facility unsafe, non-emergency. Recommendations for owner action are listed.

Book excerpt: Based on a visual inspection, construction history, and available engineering data, the dam is considered to be in poor condition. The size classification of the facility is small and its hazard classification is considered to be high. Breach analysis indicates that failure under less than 1/2 PMF conditions could lead to increased downstream damage and potential for loss of life. Thus, based on screening criteria provided in the recommended guidelines, the spillway is considered to be seriously inadequate and the facility unsafe, non-emergency. Structural deficiencies observed by the inspection team included excessive settlement of both the main embankment and dike structures, general deterioration of the spillway and outlet works, and a general lack of routine maintenance . Historical correspondences also strongly questions the construction quality of the facility.

Book excerpt: Fawn Lake Dam is a homogeneous earth embankment structure provided with a blanket drain and a rock toe. The design includes provision of a key trench. The embankment is approximately 400 feet long and has a maximum height of 41 feet. A 90-foot long overflow spillway is located between the embankment and the left abutment. The dam is provided with 5 feet of freeboard above the spillway, crest. Spillway training walls extend both upstream and downstream of the spillway, as shown on Plate 4. A concrete apron extends 100 feet downstream of the spillway, and varies in width from 90 feet at the spillway to 25 feet at the outlet channel. A trapezoidal outlet channel is lined with grouted riprap for approximately 250 feet downstream of the apron. A 24-inch diameter reinforced concrete pipe is provided as a low level outlet. Flow through the pipe is controlled by a gate valve at the upstream toe of the embankment. The operating stem expands from the valve to the top of dam, and is supported on concrete columns embedded in the embankment.

Book excerpt: Camp Delmont Dam is a concrete capped rockfilled timber crib structure with steel and timber sheetpile abutments about 190 feet long, with a maximum height of 19 feet. The dam has a maximum storage capacity of 236 acre feet and a maximum height of 19 feet which places it in the 'Small' size category. Because of the chance for appreciable damage to several cottages located downstream of the site and little chance for loss of life due to failure of the dam, the dam is judged to be a 'Significant' hazard structure. Due to the inhabitable dwellings located downstream of the dam, fifty percent of the Probable Maximum Flood (PMF) was selected as the appropriate Spillway Design Flood (SDF). An examination of the results of the hydrologic and hydraulic analyses indicates that the spillway and adjacent roadway are capable of passing 36% of the PMF without overtopping the dam abutments. The selected SDF for the dam is fifty percent of the PMF. Since the spillway is not capable of passing the SDF, the spillway is classified as 'Inadequate'. Further examination of the hydrologic and hydraulic analyses indicates that the spillway and adjacent roadway are capable of passing the 100 year event without overtopping the dam abutments. Based on visual observations and a review of the information obtained from Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Resources, Camp Delmont Dam appears to be in good condition.

This book was released on 1981 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on a visual inspection, operational history and hydrologic/ hydraulic anlaysis, the dam is considered to be in fair condition. Results of the hydrologic and hydraulic analysis indicate the facility is capable of accommodating a 1/2 PMF event. Specifically, the facility will pass and/or store about 65 percent of the PMF prior to embankment overtopping. Consequently, the spillway is considered hydraulically adequate. It is noted that the spillway, as constructed, is considered to be deficient. The evaluation of its hydraulic adequacy is based upon the assumption that the channel adequately protected against erosion such that its service cannot threaten the structural integrity of the embankment.

Book excerpt: This flood control dam consists of a 1000-foot-long earthfill embankment with a maximum height of 25 feet. Seven hundred fifty feet of the embankment crosses the valley, the other 250 feet ties the embankment to higher ground in the left abutment. The principal spillway is a drop inlet structure with an orifice opening and discharges through a 30-inch diameter pipe. This spillway is designed to handle a 100 year flood. For any larger floods the emergency spillway is required. This grassed earth spillway is located in the right abutment and has its design crest elevation 4.6 feet below the top of embankment. The emergency spillway has a channel bottom width of about 60 feet. Based on the visual inspection, past performance and the available engineering data, the dam and its appurtenant structures appear to be in good condition. The spillway capacity is adequate to pass the PMF peak inflow without overtopping the dam.
