Book excerpt: Excerpt from National Calamities From God and Thoughts on President Lincoln's Assassination: A Discourse, Delivered at the Presbyterian Church, Lexington, Richland Sabbath Even'g, April 23, 1865 Amos, in the commencement of this chapter, expatiates on the Divine goodness towards the Hebrew people - tells them of their abuse of it - and predicts the certainty of the punishment that must follow. "Hear this word that the Lord hath spoken against you, O children of Israel, against the whole family which I brought up from the land of Egypt, saying, "You only have I known of all the families of the earth: therefore I will punish you for all your iniquities." Then in a series of pointed and parabolic interrogations, the prophet illustrates the punishment which must be endured as the result of disobedience. "Can two walk together, except they be agreed? "Will a lion roar in the forest, when he hath no prey? will a young lion cry out of his den, if he have taken nothing? "Can a bird fall in a snare from the earth, where no gin is for him? shall one take up a snare from the earth, and have taken nothing at all? "Shall a trumpet be blown in the city, and the people not be afraid? shall there be evil in a city, and the Lord hath not done it?" The positiveness of punishment for sin, is the point insisted on in these similitudes, on the hypothesis that the guilty people did not repent. Though the Lord had determined to inflict punishment on them, yet He did not execute it until He had given them warning, and afforded them an opportunity to develop penitence and obedience. "Surely the Lord God will do nothing, but (except) He revealeth His secret (purpose) unto His servants the prophets."
