Book excerpt: Excerpt from National Board of Review Magazine, 1939-1942: Volumes 14-17 Sometimes you will find, of course, that repetition of individuality is more tiresome than repetition of story. It seems to make all the stories look alike, no matter how different they may be in plot and content. But that is because the director is trying to make a picture about himself, instead of about the people in the story. Book excerpt: Historians and students of American avant-garde cinema often overlook the films of the 1920s through the early 1940s, considering them mere derivatives of their European counterparts. In fact, the American films possess an eclecticism, innovation, and naivete all their own. Marshaling his broad cinematic and cultural knowledge, editor Jan-Christopher Horak has compiled in Lovers of Cinema a ground-breaking group of articles on this neglected film period. With one exception, all are original to this volume, and many are the first to treat comprehensively such early filmmakers as Mary Ellen Bute, Theodore Huff, and Douglass Crockwell.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After a series of sex scandals rocked the film industry in 1922, movie moguls hired Will Hays to clear the image of movies. Hays tried a variety of ways to regulate movies before adopting what became known as the production code. Written in 1930 by a St Louis priest, the code stipulated that movies stress proper behaviour, respect for government, and 'Christian values'. The Catholic Church reinforced these efforts by launching its Legion of Decency in 1934. Intended to force Hays and Hollywood to censor films, the Legion of Decency engineered the appointment of Joseph Breen as head of the Production Code Administration. For the next three decades, Breen, Hays, and the Catholic Legion of Decency virtually controlled the content of all Hollywood films.

We have chosen the last, believing that the information service we offer is more important to you than the 4shininess of our pages. In its new format, new moves will actually be able to afford more space to movie news, comment and criticism than in these last constricting months. We hope, with financial worries off our minds to me he it a more stimulating magazine than ever before, and one worthy of the in tareet, support and loyalty our friends have always shown for, it. The power of the mo tion picture shows itself with-tremendous force in some parts of this film, though the element that has called out most praise has been the acting of Charles Laughton, in an impressive variant of the part he played in Les Miserables. More than 200 new entries have been added, and all original entries have been updated; each entry is followed by a short bibliography. As its predecessor, the new dictionary is unique in that it is not a who's who of the industry, but rather a what's what: a dictionary of producing and releasing companies, technical innovations, industry terms, studios, genres, color systems, institutions and organizations, etc. More than 800 entries include everything from Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences to Zoom Lens, from Astoria Studios to Zoetrope.
