Book excerpt: Excerpt from National and Social Problems This book - being an appeal to international morality and a plea for social regeneration - develops the principles laid down in two preceding works: the first, on religious belief; the second, on philosophic thought. In The Creed of a Layman I traced the growth of my own convictions from a theologic to a scientific Faith. In The Philosophy of Common Sense I dealt with the intellectual grounds on which a human religion must be based. The natural complement of these treatises is to show this system of philosophic religion in action. Let us observe its practical effect in moulding opinion on the great questions of Nations and of Society: on patriotism, international justice, government; and again, on problems of Wealth, of Labour, of Socialism. Theology, absorbed in matters of Worship and hopes of Heaven, has no call to meddle with earthly politics, to offer counsel to secular rulers, or to propound any scheme for reorganising society. Its kingdom is not of this world; and it seldom intrudes on worldly affairs without adding to the conflicts and the perplexities it finds. A human religion, on the other hand, is bound by its creed to preach a humane standard in politics, to work for a new earth, if it cannot promise a new heaven. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Social Problem: Life and Work Tms volume is designed to be an informal introduction to the science and art of social progress. It does not profess to furnish any sufficient outline of sociology or politics, but seeks to ask and answer certain preliminary questions which confront thinking men and women who are interested in work of social reform, and wish to reach satisfactory intelligible principles for their guidance in such work. Its primary object is to enforce the recognition of the organic unity of the problem of social progress by showing the interactions of the many concrete questions and movements which divide the attention of social reformers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Social Problems: A Study of Present-Day Social Conditions The aim in this work is not to make original contributions to the subjects discussed, but rather to collect the available material on these subjects and arrange it in such form that it may be used advantageously as a basis for study in the classroom. The work is intended primarily for beginners in the field of social studies - for those who may desire a better understanding of present-day social questions. It deals largely with facts and with an analysis of conditions. Pure theory is kept in the background as much as possible in the thought that the more abstruse theoretical questions should be left for more advanced courses. The effort has been made to present the matter in as clear and in as impartial a manner as is possible; also care has been taken to give the authority for practically every important statement of fact made. Through the use of the supplementary questions and the references at the end of each chapter, ample material may be found for a college or normal school course on this subject. It is also hoped that the references given and topics suggested will be of assistance to reading circles and study clubs that may wish to pursue such a course of study as is here presented. Although the book deals mainly with the evils, or at least the weaknesses, in our social system, yet it is hoped that a spirit of optimism pervades the work - an optimism based on the knowledge of past achievements in social progress and inspiring us to greater efforts in the future. The trend of education to-day is toward a better understanding of our own times. The past century was characterized by great advance in the physical sciences - in the control of physical forces. The indications arc that the present century may be characterized by great advance in the social sciences - in the control of social forces. Already great movements are under way. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Problems of National and International Politics The subject of this lecture sounds controversial, but I 'do not think my address will be dragged into the arena of controversy for some time to come. In a way I wish it would form a topic of hot debate, for then it would mean that the world is changing in its views on political problems. We have often heard that Theosophy has nothing to do with politics; but I do not think any instructed member of our Society will rule out of court the study and exposition of such problems of politics as I desire to place before you to-day, though I am inclined to believe that the world outside the Theosophical Society will pass it by, with a good natured shrug of the shoulder. Is now recognized, too, as a question of the quality, as well as the quantity, of population. The eugenics idea, whether or not it prove capable of development into a new science, the foundation for a new population policy, the con scious improvement of the human stock, - has Opened our eyes to some very present evils and dangers. It is unfortunate that our knowledge of the laws of heredity, which is the basis of eugenics, is so uncertain and fragmentary, and that the progress of investigation must necessarily be slow. Otherwise we might look for a rapid and at the same time sure progress of both theoretical and practical eugenics. Even with the advance of genetic psychology and experimental genetics much doubt must continue to exist with regard to the relative in uence of environ ment and heredity. The laymen may well await the verdict of time, also, as to the validity of the methods of investigation used by the biometricians of the Pearson school in England, and of Mendelism, upon which as a working hypothesis the investiga tions of the Eugenics Record Office,1 and most other American work, are being carried out. Meanwhile it is desirable to know what the problems of eugenics are, and what the difficulties in the way. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Problems in American Society: Some Social Studies Let the light Shine into every nook and comer, and let every piece be tested; for, if there is anything out of order, it is high time that it be mended, and, if there is anything which has become obsolete, it is high time that it be cast aside for something better. Criticism will lead in creativeness, and after wild vagaries will come the saner mood. Vast improvements in the form and content of human life will result from this free and intense application of thought to all these questions of poverty, crime, education, economics, and religious co-operation. It is only by such discussion that we can hope to reach modes of life, individual and corporate, on a level with our intelligence. And one of the most hopeful indications of the hour is this growing interest in all matters which pertain to the problem of living. The social impulse which seeks to put a truth to divine uses is as necessary as the scientific spirit which seeks to discover that truth. The author has gathered facts and impressions from many different writers. The purpose Of the course will be defeated if the student does not himself read extensively If he reaches conclusions different from the author's, then the course is successful in its main purpose of arousing interest and independent thinking. These are contemporary. Problems, the most of them still unsolved. The course isintended to open up a hundred questions, for which it is hoped the student _will feel interest and social responsibility enough to seek answers in the coming years. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Social Problems: Their Treatment, Past, Present, and Future: A Lecture Delivered at the Galton Laboratory for National Eugenics, March 19, 1912> Well, as a 'consistent Socialist' I mean in and out of season to preach to the inconsistent Socialist that nature is more important than nurture, and that no social changes can be stable which neglect this great truth. I do not see why we should lose all the emotional force, all the enthusiasm behind the idea that all politics must be socialistic, that all politics tend towards social welfare, because in the past and at the present so many political movements find no justifica tion whatever in our growing knowledge of the laws of human development. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Social Problems in Labor Relations: A Case Book The change of scale in business and industrial operations in this country during the last fifty years is a striking fact that has been generally Observed, but some of its social, as distinguished from its economic, implications have not received the attention that they deserve. During this relatively short period, many business enterprises have passed from the scale of the owner manager, directing 100 or zoo workers and selling to a small num ber of customers, to corporations that number their owners (stockholders) by tens of thousands, their managers by hundreds, their workers by tens of thousands, and their customers (who are for practical purposes unknown to them) by hundreds of thou sands. In its early stages this change of scale, which was often achieved by combining several competing firms, caused widespread alarm and produced antitrust or antimonopoly legislation designed to prevent the abuses that were predicted. In the first decades of this century, for example, President Theodore Roosevelt embarked upon his famous trust-busting campaign, in response to an insistent popular demand. But looking back at it thirty years later, the results were certainly disappointing, and one is tempted to suggest that the statesmen and lawmakers of that period failed to make a correct diagnosis of what they assumed to be an industrial disease.
