Translation & Introduction Paul Smith. This famous and often infamous poet, philosopher and traveller Nasir-i-Khusraw (1005-1070) was the influential author of a Divan, masnavis and many prose-works. Like many of the greatest poets in this book he was born in Balkh (now Afghanistan). His takhallas or pen-name was Hujjat... or 'Proof' of Khurasan. As a young man he became a court poet but at the age of forty-two walked out on his old life in search of the Truth. Like Sadi he travelled widely throughout the Middle-East and North Africa for six years and recorded his wanderings in his 'Book of Travels' or Safar-nama. He spent the remainder of his life in Yumgan in a secluded fort after fleeing from persecution for his beliefs. There he taught his disciples and others the Ismailian doctrine and the spiritual path. He is considered to be one of the greatest and most influential poets of the classical period of the Persian language and a great Spiritual Master. His Divan is over 11,000 couplets. This is the largest selection of his poems translated into English in the correct form and meaning. Introduction includes: His Life, Times & Poetry & that of his teacher Mu'ayyad fi'l-Din al-Shirazi & a selection of his poems. On Form of the Qasida & Masnavi. Selected Bibliography. Three Appendixes including his famous book of Travels (Safar-nama) & his 'Book of Enlightenment. Large Type (16pt) & Large Format Paperback (8" x 10") 370 pages. Comments on Paul Smith's Translation of Hafiz's 'Divan'. "It is not a joke... the English version of all the ghazals of Hafiz is a great feat and of paramount importance. I am astonished." Dr. Mir Mohammad Taghavi (Dr. of Literature) Tehran. "Superb translations. 99% Hafiz 1% Paul Smith." Ali Akbar Shapurzman, translator of works into Persian and knower of Hafiz's Divan off by heart. "Smith has probably put together the greatest collection of literary facts and history concerning Hafiz." Daniel Ladinsky (Penguin Books author). Paul Smith (b. 1945) is a poet, author and translator of many books of Sufi poets of the Persian, Arabic, Urdu, Turkish, Pashtu and other languages including Hafiz, Sadi, Nizami, Rumi, 'Attar, Sana'i, Jahan Khatun, Obeyd Zakani, Nesimi, Kabir, Anvari, Ansari, Jami, Khayyam, Rudaki, Yunus Emre, Lalla Ded, Seemab, Jigar, Abu Nuwas, Seemab and many others, as well as poetry, fiction, plays, biographies, children's books and 12 screenplays. amazon.com/author/smithpa NEW HUMANITY BOOKS

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nasir-I-Khusraw, Poet, Traveller, and Propagandist N ow the collected poems of N asir-i-khusraw are remarkable not only for their sincerity but for their devoutness, though their devoutness is that Of a heretical Isma'ili, not of an orthodox Sunni Muhammadan. Yet these poems are little read, and nine out of ten more or less well-read Persians, if asked to repeat some of his verses, will cite one or other of three scraps of poetry, all more or less blasphemous, in that they scoff at the Resurrection of the Body in the coarsest fashion, and reproach the Creator with having exposed man to temptations without giving him the power to resist them, and having created a Devil without any sufficient reason. These three poems are absent from the only edition Of nasir-i-khusraw's poetical works which I possess, and, though I have found them in one of the British Museum manuscripts, their authenticity must, I think, be regarded as doubtful. At any rate, if genuine, we must suppose that they were composed before the poet's conversion, that is, during the first forty years Of his life, while all the poems contained in the lithographed edition of the Diwan appear to have been written after his return from Egypt, that is, after his fiftieth year. The outward political and religious events of the first half of the 11th century were the canvas on which Nasir-i Khusraw's poetry and prose developed. It is a poetry that teaches the importance of wisdom, of reason, of the right word and the right faith. Nasir-i edifice of religio-philosophical thought with its constant emphasis on the true faith and, as importantly, on reason and its role. Unique and important for our understanding of the times in which it was written Nasir-i Khusraw's ideas and expressions appeal strongly to readers of today. . The interest in Nasir-i Khusraw's poetry lies first in its contents and, from the purely formal viewpoint, in its consummate artistry. Through the poet's descriptions of gardens and stars, and his technical skill in the use of language and metre, the book offers an insight in to the poet's learning in all areas of Islamic and scientific topics. Above all, the poet successfully combines poetical skill with a deep religious conviction. The work of the Persian author in both its philosophical and poetical aspects has been known in the West for more than a century, but until now a full evaluation of Nasir-i Khusraw's poetry - his Divan - has not been attempted. This volume is intended as a step toward a better understanding of the poet's thought. In it, the noted Islamic scholar Annemarie Schimmel presents her translations of Nasir-i Khusraw's qasidas along with a detailed study of the poet and his work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pamiris, or Badakhshanis in popular discourse, form a small group of Iranic peoples who inhabit the mountainous region of Pamir-Hindu Kush, being the historical region of Badakhshan. Pamiri communities are located in the territories of four current nation-states: Tajikistan, Afghanistan, China and Pakistan. This book provides insights in the identity process of a group of mountain communities whose vigorous cultures, languages and complex political history have continued to shape a strategic part of the world. Its various chapters capture what being a Pamiri may entail and critically explore the impact of both trans-regionalism and the globalisation processes on activating, engaging and linking the dispersed communities. The book presents a variety of lines of argument pertaining to Pamiri identity and identification processes. Structured in three parts, the book first addresses themes relevant to the region’s geography and the recent history of Pamiri communities. The second section critically explores the rich philosophical, religious and cultural Pamiri heritage through the writings of prominent historical figures. The final section addresses issues pertaining to the contemporary diffusion of traditions, peace-building, interconnectivity and what it means to be a Pamiri for the youth of the region. Contributions by experts in their field offer fresh insights into the Ismaili communities in the region while successfully updating the historical and ethnographic legacy of Soviet times with present-day scholarship. As the first collection of scholarly contributions in English entirely focusing on the Pamiri people, this book will be of interest to academics in the fields of the history, anthropology, religious studies, sociology, linguistics, education and geography of Central Asia and/or East Asia as well as of Islam, Islamic thought, minority-majority relations, population movements and the processes of defining and affirming identity among minority groups.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jami (1414-1492), a scholar and mystic, is considered by many to be one of the greatest Persian poets of the 15th century. This volume, edited by F. Hadland Davis and first published in 1908, contains selections from some of Jami's best-known works. "Salaman and Absal" examines the earthly love ("the love that binds and fetters and is corruptible") of the eponymous star-crossed lovers and contrasts it with "incorruptible" celestial love. The "Lawa'ih" is a treatise on Sufism. "Yusuf and Zulaikha" tells of Zulaikha's unrequited love for Yusuf, and the "Baharistan" is a book of verse and prose written as a series of eight "gardens." A brief biography of Jami and some additional information on each of the selections are included in this timeless work. FREDERICK HADLAND DAVIS is also the author of The Persian Mystics: Jalalu'd-Din Rumi (1907) and Myths and Legends of Japan (1912), both available from Cosimo.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I.B.Tauris in association with the Institute of Ismaili Studies This is the first English translation of the final philosophical work of the great eleventh-century Ismaili thinker, poet, and Fatimid emissary, N?sir-i Khusraw. Appointed from Cairo by command of the Fatimid Imam-caliph al-Mustansir to serve first as a d?'?, and then as the hujjat, for the entire region of Khur?s?n, he maintained his allegiance both to his mission and his Imam-caliph for the rest of his life, even when threatened and driven into exile. Written during his exile in Badakhsh?n in the year 1070, N?sir-i Khusraw here develops a powerful presentation of both Aristotelian philosophy and Ismaili exegesis, or ta'w?l, and strives to show that they are ultimately in harmony. The work is presented as a learned commentary on a long philosophical poem, written in the previous century and sent to N?sir by the am?r of Badakhsh?n, 'Al? b. al-Asad, who copied the poem out in his own hand from memory and asked the poet-philosopher to explicate it. In doing so, N?sir ranges over a huge span of topics from logic and language to the nature of the physical world, from the spheres of the highest heavens to the plants and animals of the earthly realm, and, most importantly, hidden spiritual realities: the esoteric (b?tin) as well as the exoteric (z?hir) realms. He thus discusses the nature of God, the creation of human beings, and the mysteries concealed in the physical world, itself a reflection of a higher, transcendent realm. Between Reason and Revelation: Twin Wisdoms Reconciled is an annotated translation of the Persian text prepared by Henry Corbin and Mohammed Mu'?n based on the single surviving manuscript of the work, now in the Süleymaniye Mosque Library in Istanbul. It is a work of great philosophical and spiritual insight, which is also a pioneering attempt to tackle difficult intellectual problems in the Persian language; it is at once lucid and lyrical, precise and speculative. N?sir's influence has been immense as both a poet and a thinker, and the Kit?b-i J?mi' al-hikmatayn is his crowning work.

Book excerpt: I.B.Tauris in association with the Institute of Ismaili Studies Nasir-i Khusraw is a major literary figure in medieval Persian culture. He was a Muslim philosopher, poet, travel writer, and Ismaili da'i who lived a thousand years ago in the lands known today as Afghanistan, Iran, and Tajikistan. Although known in the West mainly for his Safarnama, or travelogue, which describes his seven-year journey from Khurasan, in the eastern Islamic lands, to Cairo, the city of the Fatimid imam-caliphs, his poetry and ideas are less familiar. Yet, over the centuries, Persian-speaking lands have consistently ranked him as one of the finest poets of all time. But today, even among those who know Nasir-i Khusraw's poetry, few understand the philosophical and Ismaili concepts the poet expounds. And while mystical and epic genres of Persian poetry are memorized and studied, the genre of philosophical poetry in Persian remains basically unexplored. This collection of studies seeks to redress the balance. Originally presented at a conference at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London in 2005 to commemorate the millenary of Nasir-i Khusraw's birth, the papers published here examine his poetry both for philosophical meaning and poetic method. They address a variety of topics, ranging from metaphysics, cosmology, and ontology to prophecy, as well as rhythm and structure, and analysis of individual poems and authorship.
