Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Narrative of a Residence in South Africa In offering to the Public a second edition of this little work, it may be proper to notice that the first edition bore the general title of "African Sketches," consisting of two unequal divisions of Poetry and Prose. The Author has now withdrawn the section of Verse altogether from the volume, partly from the conviction that the prose narrative-forms without it a whole sufficiently complete, and partly with the view of reproducing the poetical sketches at some future period, in a separate shape, and with such additions as he hopes may render the collection less unworthy of public favour. The omission of a few passages and notes, exclusively of colonial and temporary interest, is the only point in which the Narrative has undergone any alteration. The expediency of a change of title in the present edition is too obvious to require remark. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: 1650-1850 combines fresh considerations of prominent authors and artists with searches for overlooked or offbeat elements of the Enlightenment legacy. Volume 27 expands around a landmark special feature on worlds and worldmaking--on the imagining of new, exotic, unexplored, ideal, and utopian worlds ranging from south sea islands to polar utopias to zones of intercultural encounter to the conjectural territories of interpretive cartography. Enlivening the volume is a cavalcade of full-length book reviews.

Book Synopsis The Short Story after Apartheid by : Graham K. Riach
Download or read book The Short Story after Apartheid written by Graham K. Riach and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2023-10-15 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Short Story after Apartheid offers the first major study of the anglophone short story in South Africa since apartheid’s end. By focusing on the short story this book complicates models of South African literature dominated by the novel and contributes to a much-needed generic and formalist turn in postcolonial studies. Literary texts are sites of productive struggle between formal and extra-formal concerns, and these brief, fragmentary, elliptical, formally innovative stories offer perspectives that reframe or revise important concerns of post-apartheid literature: the aesthetics of engaged writing, the politics of the past, class and race, the legacies of violence, and the struggle over the land. Through an analysis of key texts from the period by Nadine Gordimer, Ivan Vladislavić, Zoë Wicomb, Phaswane Mpe, and Henrietta Rose-Innes, this book assesses the place of the short story in post-apartheid writing and develops a fuller model of how artworks allow and disallow forms of social thought.
