Therefore, it might be reasonably argued that there is little room for another volume. Nonetheless, this vast outpouring of literature has usually dealt with major leaders, specific battles or campaigns, and with certain branches of the service. Moreover, at least in English, the literature tends to concentrate primarily on the French or British armies. There appears to be a lack of works combining a description of the major changes and trends in the art of war, especially at the cutting edge of events, with a discussion of the French military establishment and the armies of the major opponents, British as well as continental. And while this book is only a brief survey, I do believe that it may serve as a contribution towards filling this gap in our historical knowledge of military institutions and fighting men.

Book excerpt: A new personal account and history The Marine Artillery of Napoleon's army is possibly one of the least well known units in the military history of the First Empire of the French. During the later 18th century French naval gunners were quite separate from naval crews and their task was not only to serve the guns on ships of war, but also to garrison essential ports and fortifications along the long coastline of France and beyond. The dominance of the Royal Navy at sea during this period ensured the French fleet lay blockaded in its harbours and so the men of the Marine Artillery languished for years without being called to action. By 1813 almost continuous wars of grinding attrition, culminating in the catastrophic disaster of the Russian Campaign, had seriously depleted the ranks of the French Army. Napoleon realised that in the Marine Artillery he had a valuable but underemployed asset. Its ranks were accordingly expanded, including conscripts and officers from St. Cyr, and it marched to war, not as artillery, but as infantry, in the campaign that was to be fought in Germany. Marmont, who was given command of these troops, was initially sceptical as to their practical value, but events--as this book graphically reveals--proved him to be entirely wrong. Jean Louis Rieu was a Swiss officer of the Marine Artillery whose personable military memoirs (translated into English here for the first time in their entirety) provide compelling and unique insights into the activities of the Marine Artillery and its performance on campaign on the battlefields of Lutzen, Bautzen, Dresden, Leipzig and others. James Schneider has tied the emergence of operational art to the technological advances of the industrial revolution; specifically the rifled musket, steam locomotive, and instantaneous communications theoretically possible with telegraph. Schneider lists eight "key attributes" that are used in this monograph as elements of operational art. These elements are: a distributed operation, distributed campaign, continuous logistics, instantaneous command and control, operationally durable formations, operational vision, a distributed enemy, and distributed deployment. Others argue that technology was important, but not the only factor in the development of operational art. This monograph uses Schneider's elements as the criteria to establish the presence or absence of operational art in the 1813 campaign in Germany. The 1813 German campaign is examined from the viewpoint of Napoleon's adversaries; principally the Prussians, Russians, and Austrians. This campaign was used because it represents Napoleonic warfare at a very high level of sophistication by both the Allies and their French opponents. Both sides were now organized along the French model with field armies, corps, and divisions as standard organizations. The armies that faced each other, while composed of some veteran troops, were mostly the result of massive conscription across all classes of society. All of the protagonists were essentially nations in arms. The complexity of this campaign, there were approximately seven field armies in Germany by the fall of 1813, lends itself well to a search for Schneider's elements. The course of this campaign followed a pattern of attrition and exhaustion which, too, favors an operational analysis vice analysis long the lines of classical strategy.
