Book excerpt: "Over 30 years have passed since the commercialization of the lithium ion battery (LIB), which to date continues to present key challenges in energy/power, stability, and safety. Intense research efforts have made large strides in developing durable LIBs with high energy and power densities toward a wide range of applications from electric vehicles to large scale energy storage systems for renewable energy. Nevertheless, limited work has been done in the applications of amorphous oxide electrode materials due to the perception that amorphous materials are less electrically conductive than crystalline ones. Recent studies suggest that inducing crystallization of amorphous nanostructured oxides through electrochemical cycling can lead to materials with enhanced electrochemical charge storage performance. However, fundamental knowledge regarding the driving forces, thermodynamics, and nucleation and growth kinetics of the electrochemically-induced amorphous-to-crystalline (a-to-c) transformation remains limited. In this work we report a new nanostructured rock salt (RS) Nb2O5 electrode formed through operando electrochemical cycling of amorphous Nb2O5 with Li+."--Boise State University ScholarWorks.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nanostructured Anodic Metal Oxides: Synthesis and Applications reviews the current status of fabrication strategies that have been successfully developed to generate nanoporous, nanotubular and nanofibrous anodic oxides on a range of metals. The most recent achievements and innovative strategies for the synthesis of nanoporous aluminum oxide and nanotubular titanium oxide are discussed. However, a special emphasis is placed on the possibility of fabrication of nanostructured oxide layers with different morphologies on other metals, including aluminum titanium, tantalum, tin, zinc, zirconium and copper. In addition, emerging biomedical applications of synthesized materials are discussed in detail. During the past decade, great progress has been made both in the preparation and characterization of various nanomaterials and their functional applications. The anodization of metals has proven to be reliable for the synthesis of nanoporous, nanotubular and nanofibrous metal oxides to produce a desired diameter, density, aspect ratio (length to diameter) of pores/tubes, and internal pore/tube structure. Provides an in-depth overview of anodization techniques for a range of metals Explores the emerging applications of anodic metal oxides Explains mechanisms of formation valve metal oxides via anodization

The synthesis methods were the hydrothermal method, the electrospinning method, and electrostatic spray deposition (ESD). By controlling the synthesis conditions, different morphologies can be obtained, which result in different electrochemical performances. All of these studies provide a fundamental basis for the development of high performance lithium ion batteries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The demand for electrical energy storage has increased tremendously in recent years, especially in the applications of portable electronic devices, transportation and renewable energy. The performances of lithium-ion and sodium-ion batteries depend on their electrode materials. In commercial Li-ion batteries with graphite anodes the intercalation potential of lithium in graphite is close to the reversible Li/Li+ half-cell potential. The proximity of the potentials can result in unintended electroplating of metallic instead of intercalation of lithium in the graphite anode and frequently leads to internal shorting and overheating, which constitute unacceptable hazards, especially when the batteries are large, as they are in cars and airplanes. Moreover, graphite cannot be readily used as the anode material of Na-ion batteries, because electroplating of metallic sodium on graphite is kinetically favored over sodium intercalation in graphite. This dissertation examines safer Li-ion and Na-ion battery anode materials.

French researchers have played a key role in this domain but Asia is currently the market leader. Not wanting to see history repeat itself, France created the research network on electrochemical energy storage (RS2E) in 2011. This book discusses the launch of RS2E, its stakeholders, objectives, and integrated structure that assures a continuum between basic research, technological research and industries. Here, the authors will cover the technological advances as well as the challenges that must still be resolved in the field of electrochemical storage, taking into account sustainable development and the limited time available to us.

This book was released on 2016 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here we report evidence for the electrochemical activity of transition-metal carbodiimides versus lithium and sodium. In particular, iron carbodiimide, FeNCN, can be efficiently used as a negative electrode material for alkali-metal-ion batteries, similar to its oxide analogue FeO. Based on 57Fe M ssbauer and infrared spectroscopy (IR) data, the electrochemical reaction mechanism can be explained by the reversible transformation of the Fe NCN into Li/Na NCN bonds during discharge and charge. These new electrode materials exhibit higher capacity compared to well-established negative electrode references such as graphite or hard carbon. Contrary to its oxide analogue, iron carbodiimide does not require heavy treatments (nanoscale tailoring, sophisticated textures, coating etc.) to obtain long cycle life with density current as high as 9 A/g-1 for hundreds of charge/discharge cycles. Similar to the iron compound, several other transition-metal carbodiimides Mx(NCN)y with M = Mn, Cr, Zn can cycle successfully versus lithium and sodium. Ultimately, their electrochemical activity and performances open the way to the design of a novel family of anode materials.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sodium-ion batteries could offer an economical and environmentally friendly alternative to lithium-ion batteries, however, many challenges must be overcome first. The need for innovative negative electrode materials for sodium-ion batteries is of paramount importance as graphite, the most highly used negative electrode material in lithium-ion batteries, intercalates sodium to an insignificant degree and other current negative electrode materials do not perform satisfactorily. This work focuses on the investigation of layered sodium titanate phase systems as electrode materials in Na-ion batteries, specifically NaxMxTi1-xO2 where M = Cr or V. The layered systems are of great importance for the development of not only traditional positive electrode materials, but novel negative electrode materials for sodium-ion batteries as well. The high capacity and ease of sodium intercalation of these layered systems make them prime candidates for implementation in sodium-ion batteries. The gravimetric capacity of these materials was found to directly relate to the number of vacancies within their layered structure. A vacancy limit of ~0.4 was determined for these sodium based layered oxides. To increase the capacity, the number of vacancies needs to be increased. Two methods were employed to increase vacancies in intercalation materials, namely the investigation of sulfide and potassium analogues, to varying degrees of success. The potassium analogues led to preliminary studies of materials for potassium-ion batteries, such as graphite and KxCoO2.
