Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents and analyzes the influence of small size particles of lead, cadmium and silver sulfide on the properties of nonstoichiometric semiconductors. Important nonstoichiometry aspects in nanostructures are discussed, such as the distribution of sulfur atoms in nanofilms, a non-periodic distribution of the atomic planes in nanoparticles, interdependent changes in crystal structure of nanocrystalline material. Tuning the stoichiometry allows to obtain superionic conductivity and catalytic activity under visible light. The wavelength of the luminescence of nanoparticles changes with the size of the nanoparticles. Various methods to prepare nanostructured sulfides are described. Special attention is given to the hydrochemical bath deposition as a universal method for the synthesis of sulfides as nanofilms, stable colloidal solutions, quantum dots, isolated nanoparticles with a protective shell and heteronanostructures. The effect of nanoparticle size and nonstoichiometry on the band gap, optical and thermal properties of nanostructured sulfides is also considered. The novel applications of sulfide nanoparticles in nanoelectronics, catalysis, nanobiology and nanomedicine are sketched.

Book excerpt: Nanoscience and Nanotechnology produce a developing strategic industry with an excellent perspective that is desirably economical. The electrical and electronics sectors, driven by customer interest in multidisciplinary abilities, have crossed the nanoscale limit within the 1990s later as a real outcome. In some regions, electrical manufacturing has been at the forefront of the introduction of nanotechnology concepts in traditional curriculum topics. The past decade has received an impact and has already been built-into several sectors. Tracking days gone by the history of nanotechnology education over the past 15 years to one's future will examine the influence, resources offered and integration of nanoscale concepts. Effective utilization of the deliberate programs may be made use of to demonstrate the tips presented. The world of nanotechnology is rapidly developing in fields such as chemical, physics, biology and electric manufacturing and has attracted tremendous attention. It's wished that it'll raise the minimal utilization of electric, optical and mechanical methods, which have possessed an influence that is certainly considered a raging economy over the years. On top of that, researchers and specialists hope it will probably cause brand new and sensational physics that can act as the basis for new technology. The influence of nanotechnology on electrical engineering also addresses nanoparticle synthesis, handling of the nanomaterials and their particular applications. This effect requires researchers to investigate brand-new habits and frameworks of nanoscale-sized objects for new applications that are electric. Generally speaking, nanotechnology is the substantial study and growth of products, devices, systems and items by exploiting a nanometer scale's structure and measurements with a minimum of one novel material. "Nano" is a word based in Greek and implies half a billionth. Usually, whenever particle sizes are in the range of 1-100nm, they are called nanoparticles or nanomaterials. To offer a sense of this size, let us consider the size: 1nm = 10A = 10-9meters and (eg that is 1μ micron) = 10-4cm = 1000nm. Nanoscience research has problems and deceptions in atomic and molecular structures for their properties that vary significantly from those of major. Fundamentally, nanotechnology makes it possible to supply new, inexpensive and much more efficient services and products inside a range; this is certainly large than numerous building products today. Nanomaterials are nanoscale-sized products. One could describe nanomaterial with its sense; as certainly broadest and having a more significant dimension than a molecule but much smaller than scores of matters. Nanometer-scale materials or Nanocrystals (NCs) typically have different properties, which can be chemical with their volume.

Book excerpt: Recently the research on nanotechnology has become increasingly popular due to their unique physical, chemical, optical and catalytic properties compared to their bulk counterparts. Nanotechnology revolutionizes many technology and industry sectors such as energy, environmental science, safety, medical sciences, medical instrumentation and many others. An II-VI semiconductor material, CdS nanostructure with a band gap of about 2.45 eV, has attracted great attention among the researches due to the peculiar properties. The objective of this research is to synthesize CdS nanostructure thin films deposited on different type of substrates glass, quartz, n-type and p-type silicon using sol-gel spin coating technique for optoelectronic applications. The CdS nanostructure thin films was synthesized and characterized using XRD, AFM, SEM, UV-VIS, PL, FTIR, TGA, DTA, DSC and Keithley 2400 Source Meter. Silver electrodes were thermally evaporated on the surface of CdS nanostructure thin films using stainless steel shadow mask. For CdS nanostructure thin films deposited on glass substrates, the results have indicated that the CdS has hexagonal structure. The thickness of CdS nanostructure thin films as measured by AFM is found to be in the range of 150 nm and 10 nm at 1000 rpm and 5000 rpm spin coating speeds respectively. For CdS nanostructure thin films deposited onto quartz substrates and annealed at 800 oC with different spin coating speeds 1000, 3000 and 5000 rpm,the structural, morphological and analytical studies were investigatedand found that the grain size of CdS nanostructure thin films found to be in the range 1.81 nm to 4.35 nm. The band gap was measured with an indication of transmission within the visible range. It is found that the band gap changed due to small grain size of CdS nanostructure thin films. The morphology of CdS nanostructurethin films are found to be continuous, dense and well adhered. In the last two decade, the demand of electrical power increased tremendously and power system have been operated under much more stressed condition hence may lead to unstable power system. On the other hand, low frequency oscillation due to interconnection between remotely located power system may as well affect the system stability. Thus, to improve dynamic power system stability the research proposed the installation of Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC) which is the most versatile Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS) device in single machine infinite bus (SMIB) based on fuzzy logic power system stabilizer (FLPSS). In the proposed system, the parameters for the power system before and after the installation of UPFC is derived referring to the Phillips-Heffron SMIB model. After the mathematical process, the value of all the parameters is obtained using Matlab m-file listing program. Based on the parameter value, the block diagram for the power system before and after the installation of UPFC is formed using Matlab Simulink. Power system stabilizer is then added to the conventional power system model while FLPSS is added to UPFC excitation control. In this study, damping controller m_E and m_B of UPFC is used. After given small disturbances to both power system, the ability of both power system to damp oscillation is monitored by investigating the changes of rotor angle, change of rotor speed and change of electrical power. The result showed that that fuzzy logic controller is able to decrease the amplitude of low frequency oscillation and increases damping rate successfully. Comparing between power system model installed with UPFC based on FLPSS and conventional power system indicates that the proposed FLPSS has less settling time and less overshoot. When electrical power is increased at 0.1 pu, using damping controller m_E, rotor angle overshoot is decreased at 84.63% and settling time decreased at 80.32%.
