Book excerpt: Many of the devices and systems used in modern industry are becoming progressively smaller and have reached the nanoscale domain. Nanofabrication aims at building nanoscale structures, which can act as components, devices, or systems, in large quantities at potentially low cost. Nanofabrication is vital to all nanotechnology fields, especially for the realization of nanotechnology that involves the traditional areas across engineering and science. This is the first book solely dedicated to the manufacturing technology in nanoscale structures, devices, and systems and is designed to satisfy the growing demands of researchers, professionals, and graduate students. Both conventional and non-conventional fabrication technologies are introduced with emphasis on multidisciplinary principles, methodologies, and practical applications. While conventional technologies consider the emerging techniques developed for next generation lithography, non-conventional techniques include scanning probe microscopy lithography, self-assembly, and imprint lithography, as well as techniques specifically developed for making carbon tubes and molecular circuits and devices.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scanning Probe Microscopy (SPM) is the enabling tool for nano(bio)technology, which has opened new vistas in many interdisciplinary research areas. Concomitant with the developments in SPM instrumentation and techniques are new and previously unthought-of opportunities in materials nanofabrication and characterisation. In particular, the developments in addressing and manipulating matter at the level of single atoms or molecules, and studies of biological materials (e.g. live cells, or cell membranes) result in new and exciting discoveries. The rising importance of SPM demands a concise treatment in the form of a book which is accessible to interdisciplinary practitioners. This book highlights recent advances in the field of SPM with sufficient depth and breadth to provide an intellectually stimulating overview of the current state of the art. The book is based on a set of carefully selected original works from renowned contributors on topics that range from atom technology, scanning tunneling spectroscopy of self-assembled nanostructures, SPM probe fabrication, scanning force microscopy applications in biology and materials science down to the single molecule level, novel scanning probe techniques, and nanolithography. The variety of topics underlines the strong interdisciplinary character of SPM related research and the combined expertise of the contributors gives us a unique opportunity to discuss possible future trends in SPM related research. This makes the book not merely a collection of already published material but an enlightening insight into cutting edge research and global SPM research trends.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Ph. D. thesis addresses nanostructure fabrication techniques based on electron beam lithography and their application to: the creation of ultra-fast metal-semiconductor-metal photodetectors and quantum effect transistors, the investigation of light emission from silicon, and the enhancement of resolution in magnetic force microscopy. Specifically, this thesis covers the following topics. (1) The implementation and characterization of an ultra-high resolution electron beam lithography (EBL) system created by modifying a scanning electron microscope. (2) The exploration of minimum achievable feature sizes using ultra-high resolution EBL and a lift-off process with polymethyl-methacrylate resists. 10 nm features, which are among the smallest ever achieved using EBL, have been obtained using a double shadow evaporation technique, a ultra-high resolution EBL technique, and a technique utilizing EBL, reactive ion etching, and subsequent wet etching. (3) The application of ultra-high resolution EBL technology to the fabrication of ultra-fast metal-semiconductor-metal (MSM) photodetectors. The fastest response time reported to date has been achieved in this project. (4) The fabrication and characterization of modulation doped field effect transistors. Quantum effects have been observed in a point contact device. (5) The fabrication of sub-50 nm Si structures using EBL, reactive ion etching (RIE) and subsequent wet etching for the study of photoluminescence (PL) from Si. PL has been observed from an array of 20 nm diameter pillars. And finally, (6) the application of high resolution EBL to the study of magnetic materials. Single domain magnetic particles and novel MFM tips have been fabricated.

This book was released on 1991 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A technique of making nanometer-scale structures on surfaces is developed. The technique combines two of the most advanced technologies: the laser and the scanning tunneling microscope (STM). Laser radiation is used to break the chemical bonds of gas-phase trimethylaluminum molecules to free aluminum atoms in the region of the tunneling gap of the STM. The atoms are subsequently selectively excited and ionized. The ions are then driven softly toward the surface where they are deposited by the field in the tunneling gap of the microscope. Deposits as small as 1nmx1nm were made on graphite substrates. The technique is also capable of addressable erasing. The more familiar technique of using voltage pulses applied to the STM tunneling tip to fabricate nanostructures was also studied. Both deposits and holes were made. The voltage threshold and other features of the fabrication process were studied as a function of the tip-surface biasing voltage and the tunneling current. The studies show that the structures were formed by bombardment of the graphite surface by ions produced by electron-assisted field ionization localized in the region of the tunneling gap. This technique was combined with the STM-Laser technique to modify surfaces.
