Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was only a few years ago, God shed his light on me. Anointed me with the gift of writing poetry. He opened my eyes to understand from the scripture that I read. A powerful message came down from above and descended here on me. The grace of God bestowed on me, the special gift that was given. Burns in my soul, lets the words flow on this paper it is written. O may I thank him daily for what he has given to me. May my heart yearn to do his will, to use this gift he placed in me. To see the mighty hand of God, the creator of all things. Who used a humble servant, made her a child of the King!

Book excerpt: The Irish nana is a repository of family history, memory and lore. Sometimes, like the Italian nonna, she is also a 'walking cookbook', carrying the old knowledge of how things were best done. Alice's own grandmothers, Nana Taylor and Nana Ballyduane, were the first generation after the Great Famine, born in the 1860s. These women taught their families the Irish traditions and habits of homemaking that survived for centuries, and are now almost gone. Now Alice herself is a nana too, and this book takes us through three generations and almost a century and a half. She explores the old and the new, the 'then' and 'now', the nana of yesteryear and of today, with her characteristic empathy and love.

Book excerpt: First published in 1991, this book radically challenged the view of Nana as the story of an old fashioned femme fatale and reinterprets her as a feminist heroine who manages to overturn patriarchy. The author shows how Nana confronts the traditional social order and offers an alternative version. This work gives not just an original approach to the heroine herself, but the story of Zola’s struggle with his vision of her and the subversive values she represents. This book will be of interest to students of literature and feminism.

Book excerpt: This book is a work of realistic fiction, based on the factual life conditions of countless individuals to provide reading enlightenment. It is my hope and prayer that after reading this book society will commit to rethinking its look at ex-offenders and what positive impact they can bring to society--- if they are given a fair chance. Danielle grew up confused and feeling abandoned. She moved from place to place; first with her mother, then a group home, then her grandmother, then her father. She grew up feeling that she was unwanted by everyone. Her father and step mother struggled with addiction; her biological mother may have struggled with the same types of issues. She had to live with the guilt of fatal choices she made in her young life which carried through to her adulthood. Danielle struggled with addiction and criminal activity throughout her own life. She spent a large portion of her life in battling the judicial system. She endured physical abuse as a child and as an adult. Death seemed to frequent her life and all those she thought loved and care about her seem to pass away. Her life events seem to finally open her eyes to making a change in her life. When Danielle lost her father she wanted to get high for the first time since her release from prison. She didn't know what to do with her emotions. She sat in the cold hospital emergency room and thought about her life and what using drugs again would mean for her. She had come so far and she didn't want to lose everything she had worked so hard for. Since her release from prison she had gained her family's trust and learned to trust herself. Rather than jump up and give in to her moment of weakness.. she waited. Danielle discovered that taking away the drugs was only half of her battle. She realized that living life without drugs and criminal activity was the small step to changing her thoughts feelings and actions. She just had to figure out how to make those changes successfully.

Book excerpt: An “alternately funny and heartbreaking” memoir of leaving—and finding—home, by the author of All Souls: A Family Story from Southie (Newsweek). In All Souls, Michael Patrick MacDonald told the story of the loss of four of his siblings to the violence, poverty, and gangsterism of Irish South Boston. In Easter Rising, he tells the story of how he got out. Desperate to avoid the “normal” life of Southie, Michael first reinvents himself in the burgeoning punk rock movement and the thrilling vortex of Johnny Rotten, Mission of Burma, and the Clash. At nineteen, he escapes further, to Paris and then London. Finally, out of money, he contacts his Irish immigrant grandfather—who offers a loan, but only if Michael will visit Ireland. It is on this reluctant journey to his ancestral land that Michael will find a chance at reconciliation—with his heritage, his neighborhood, and his family—and, ultimately, a way forward.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Visiting Nana was always a highlight for Janna and her brother and sister. Whether spending time with Nana in her kitchen or garden it was most enjoyable. Nanas stories of her childhood in England delighted them. Simple, ordinary things like having tea were made into a special event with cups and saucers. Meals with fresh picked peas or with cress, piled high on fresh, baked bread were something to look forward to. The greatest gifts Nana gave them was her love and her time which her grandchildren still remember and treasure. This book captures some of those wonderful memories.
