This book was released on 2011-08-01 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In most accounts of the revolt, the greased cartridge has been referred to as the spark and tinder that lit the flames of rebellion. The greased cartridge - what was it all about? The army so far had been quipped with the smooth-barrelled musket, which had a protracted loading procedure and was not accurate over long ranges. The new Enfield rifles, which were now being issued, had grooved or rifled barrels. This made them more accurate and gave them a longer range. The powder and bullet for the new rifle were put together in a paper cartridge. To load the rifle, the end of the cartridge containing the powder had to be bitten off so that the charge would ignite. The cartridge was then rammed down the muzzle of the rifle.. The grease used was tallow, probably containing both cow and pig fat. To "the cow reverencing Hindu and the pig paranoid Muslims" having to bite this was repellent, defiling and deadly to their religious prospects. The Revolt of 1857-58 was the biggest and bloodiest conflict against any European colonial power during the nineteenth century. This book is essentially about the heroes - Tatya Tope, Nana Saheb, Rani Lakshmi Bai, Kunwar Singh of Jagdishpur - and not to forget, a few villains. Though the revolt failed in its objective, even in failure it served a grand purpose. It was a source of inspiration for the national liberation movement, which later achieved what the revolt could not.

Book excerpt: This book provides a linear history beginning at the time of the East India Company’s arrival, with its near 250 year struggle to the formation of the British Raj, and the withdrawal of the Raj in the 90 years following, highlighting how the EIC rode to power and its administration replaced the Mughal’s system, while describing how the Indian intellectual middle class developed. This work then describes how the Indian National Congress was established as a platform for nationalism and opposed British ambitions. This work emphasizes the events of about the last fifty years of the Raj which survived with domestic pressure and two great wars. It is a complicated political history of conflicts between nationalists and Imperialists surrounding communal agendas of the Muslim League, and interprets how two great wars consumed the resources of Britain as well as caused the decline of the Indian economy, and how the British trajectory tended to swing towards its withdrawal. The last chapter describes how Lord Mountbatten endeavored to effectuate the transfer of power which was constrained due to communal passion.

Book excerpt: “A widely and deeply researched, elegantly written, and vital portrayal of [Queen Victoria’s] place in colonial Indian affairs.”(Journal of Modern History) In this engaging and controversial book, Miles Taylor shows how both Victoria and Albert were spellbound by India, and argues that the Queen was humanely, intelligently, and passionately involved with the country throughout her reign and not just in the last decades. Taylor also reveals the way in which Victoria’s influence as empress contributed significantly to India’s modernization, both political and economic. This is, in a number of respects, a fresh account of imperial rule in India, suggesting that it was one of Victoria’s successes. “Readers encounter a detail-attentive and independently minded monarch . . . .Information, offered with verve and occasional humor, fills chapters of Empress with little-known details of Victoria’s active rule as Empress.” —Adrienne Munich, Victorian Studies “This is a nuanced portrait of an empire rich in contradiction.” —Catherine Hall, author of Civilising Subjects “Beautifully written and subtly crafted, this book provides a critical history of the cultural, political, and diplomatic significance of Queen Victoria's role as Empress of India.” —Tristram Hunt, Director of Victoria and Albert Museum “This is a highly intelligent, wonderfully lucid and well researched book that rests on an impressive array of Indian as well as European sources. It makes a powerful case for re-assessing Queen Victoria's own role and political and religious ideas in regard to the subcontinent.” —Linda Colley, author of Britons

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Lord Chelmsford is not a bad man. He is industrious and conscientious so far as his lights guide him. But nature has refused to him the qualities of a great captain. He has suffered much and is entitled to certain commiseration.” – Thomas Gibson Bowles, Vanity Fair General Lord Chelmsford’s military career took him around the world; he served in the Crimean War, the Indian Mutiny and the Abyssinian Expedition, before commanding the British invasion of the Zulu Kingdom in South Africa. In January 1879, disaster struck when Chelmsford divided his forces at Isandlwana in the face of the enemy and the Zulu overwhelmed his camp, killing more than 1,300 of its defenders. Such a defeat was almost unprecedented in a Victorian colonial campaign. Despite Chelmsford's later victories at Gingindlovu and Ulundi, he was humiliatingly relieved of his command. His responsibility for Isandlwana dogged him for the rest of his days, and he would forever be associated with this historic defeat. In this comprehensive new biography, Anglo-Zulu War specialist John Laband, explores the personal character and military career of Lord Chelmsford, providing a well-rounded, well-balanced and well-informed picture of this complex military figure.

From 1672 To 1794 They Ruled Largely As Independent Rulers, And Thereafter Their Kingdom Was Turned Into A Princely State, And The Extent Of Its Area Was Reduced Considerably. They Left Behind Them A Good Administrative System, Which They Had Largely Inherited From The Adil Shahs And Bahmanis. The Local Chieftains, The Desais, Shared The Ruling Power With The Nawabs. They Were The Backbone Of The Provincial Administrative System. The Agrarian System Inherited Many Elements From Vijayanagara, Adil Shahs And Marathas. The Standard Land Measure, The Mar, Was Continued From The Vijayanagara Times, While The Bigha And Chawar Were Borrowed From The Adil Shahs And The Marathas. In The Religious Field One Finds An Attempt At Harmonisation And Synthesis. The Religious Festivals Of Various Castes And Communities Were Allowed To Continue As They Were Handed Down From Earlier Times. Saints Of Different Religions Commanded Equal Respect And Devotion From All The Communities. Most Of The Nawabs Were Religious-Minded, And Never Indulged In Any Religious Discrimination. There Are Many Examples Of The Nawabs Making Grants Of Lands To The Brahmins, Lingayats And Other Communities, And Not A Single Temple Or Matha Was Demolished On Religious Grounds During Their Times. Savanur Was Privileged To Get A Printing Press Early In The Modern Period. Its Judicial System Became A Model For Other Princely States. The Book Is A Pioneering Work, It Being The First Historical Work Of Its Kind On The Subject. It Throws Open To The World Of Historians A Subject About The Different Aspects Of Which Independent Works Can Be Written. It Explores New Avenues On The Uncharted Sea Of The Subject Trailing Behind New Lines Of Development For The Coming Historians.

Book excerpt: About the Book THE THIRD BATTLE OF PANIPAT—THE FINAL ONE, THE BLOODIEST OF THEM ALL The Marathas and the king of Afghanistan, Ahmad Shah Abdali, fought to claim the throne of Delhi. While the face-off had stretched on for months on the elevated flat land of Panipat, the actual conflict took place on 14 January 1761. 150,000 soldiers lost their lives, and about 80,000 horses, bullocks and elephants were slaughtered. The Maratha warriors and their allies defied the bitter cold of the north and months of starvation, fighting to the last man. The campaign brought the Maratha empire to its knees, emptying out its coffers and decimating an entire generation. This battle most horrific has dazzled generations of historians. Its tactics, ingenious battle formations and fortifications, its reputation as the supreme war of wits has kept the third battle of Panipat alive in public memory. But a war is not only glory and splendour. It is fought by flesh-and-blood people who come alive in Vishwas Patil’s Panipat. Panipat, has received thirty-eight awards since its publication in 1988, and sold more than 2,50,000 copies.
