Download or read book The Nurse in Popular Media written by Marcus K. Harmes and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2021-10-18 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The image of the nurse is ubiquitous, both in life and in popular media. One of the earliest instances of nursing and media intersecting is the Edison phonographic recording of Florence Nightingale's voice in 1890. Since then, a parade of nurses, good, bad or otherwise, has appeared on both cinema and television screens. How do we interpret the many different types of nurses--real and fictional, lifelike and distorted, sexual and forbidding--who are so visible in the public consciousness? This book is a comprehensive collection of unique insights from scholars across the Western world. Essays explore a diversity of nursing types that traverse popular characterizations of nurses from various time periods. The shifting roles of nurses are explored across media, including picture postcards, film, television, journalism and the collection and preservation of uniforms and memorabilia.
Download or read book Naked Nurse written by Rose MacFarlane and published by Rosetintedspecs Imprint. This book was released on 2013-03-12 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book covers Rose's life from 1945 to 1985. It is a thoughtful, heartfelt journey from childhood idyll in Derbyshire and Cornwall, through her student nurse days in Sheffield, midwifery training in London, the "Swinging Sixties" as a single mother, to family life and eventual divorce. She faced family tragedy in a large, boisterous family with an Irish GP father, Catholicism which she says was an unwelcome imposition and sexual violence. She went through hard times on her own in the big city. Eventually remarrying and moving to Kent she became an NHS statistic in 1985 as a work-injured nurse no longer able to work. The conduct of her employer, the National Health Service in making sure she did not receive compensation is disgraceful. This is where the book ends. Naked Nurse because of the vulnerability of student nurses, of young women in general in the 1960s. It is a harsh regime that Rose describes in the book through chapters eight to thirteen (there are thirty in total), though there are also highs. She laments some aspects of the standards of modern nursing and hopes they at least did not have to put up with the bullying and process of dehumanization that was more associated with military training. You will laugh many times while reading the book. At other times you will want to weep.

This book was released on with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second volume of 'From Darkness to Light' is a compilation of articles penned by the editors of Prabuddha Bharata, the English journal of the Ramakrishna Order started by Swami Vivekananda in 1896. The articles of the first editor B R Rajam Iyer(1896) to the thirty-sixth editor Swami Narasimhananda (2014) make up this volume. In these writings the readers get a glimpse into the various issues that have been the point of focus right from the early days of the journal in 1896 up to the recent times, how there has been a central idea consistently running through all of them, the idea of the spiritual awakening of humanity and India, and yet how the style of presentation has undergone change over a period of time with the change of editors. This makes for a fascinating reading & study. Published by Advaita Ashrama, a publication house of Ramakrishna Math, Belur Math, India.
