Ziel ist es, eine Handlungsanleitung mit Instrumenten und Methodiken zu erstellen, die speziell für kleine und mittelgroße Unternehmen infrage kommt. Mit anderen Worten, es soll ein methodischer Rahmen geschaffen werden, an den sich in Zukunft vergleichbare Unternehmen orientieren können. Die kritische Beurteilung dieses Konzepts soll dabei im Zentrum der Untersuchung stehen und identifizieren, ob die Sustainability Balanced Scorecard das Mittel der Wahl darstellt. Um den Bogen für eine praxisnahe Anwendung der Sustainability Balanced Scorecard schlagen zu können, wird anhand einer Fallstudie exemplarisch die Entwicklung einer Sustainability Balanced Scorecard für eine mittelständische Organisation durchexerziert. Dabei wird auf die Besonderheiten, die es für klein- und mittelständische Unternehmen zu beachten gilt, explizit eingegangen.
