Hierzu werden in Kapital 2 die Entwicklung und die wesentlichen Eigenschaften von eLearning benannt und es wird hierbei auf die neuen Möglichkeiten durch das Web2.0 eingegangen. Anschließend wird in Kapitel 3 untersucht, wie nachhaltige Kompetenzentwicklung entstehen kann. Hierzu wird auf der Grundlage einer Analyse des Begriffs „Kompetenz“ ein vereinfachtes Modell von Kompetenz und Kompetenzentwicklung erarbeitet, das das Wesen von Kompetenz vereinfacht und auf drei Bestimmungsgrößen reduziert. Demzufolge besteht jede Kompetenz – unabhängig von ihrer Typologie – aus Wissen, Können sowie aus Werten, Emotionen und Motivationen. Dieses Modell bildet im Kapitel 4 die Grundlage für die Prüfung, ob die technischen und kommunikativen Möglichkeiten des eLearning mit den Anforderungen an eine nachhaltige Kompetenzentwicklung korrespondieren. Dies wird auch anhand eines kleinen Beispiels verdeutlicht. Eine Zusammenfassung der Erkenntnisse dieser Arbeit findet sich im letzten Kapitel.

Das Modul soll einerseits den Erwerb von Gestaltungskompetenz im Sinne der Bildung für nachhaltige Entwicklung (BNE) und andererseits von Fachwissen zum Thema Nachhaltigkeit ermöglichen. Es wird in englischer Sprache erstellt, da es, im Falle seiner Realisierung, von internationalen Studenten genutzt werden wird. Zum Zwecke der theoretischen Fundierung und Einordnung des Projekts werden in Kapitel 2 die Grundsätze der konstruktivistischen Lerntheorie erarbeitet. Die zentrale Frage lautet dabei "wie funktioniert Lernen?" Aus den aufgezeigten Prinzipien der konstruktivistischen Lerntheorie werden Schlussfolgerungen für das didaktische Design des Moduls gezogen. Eine Einführung in die Lernform des E-Learning und die genutzte E-Learning-Plattform Moodle bietet Kapitel 3. Der Begriff des E-Learning wird geklärt. Die historische Entwicklung von E-Learning wird in knapper Form skizziert und die Relevanz des Web 2.0 für die Lernform verdeutlicht. Vor- und Nachteile sowie Potentiale von E-Learning werden mit der Zielsetzung analysiert, einen didaktischen Mehrwert durch die Nutzung dieser Lernform zu realisieren. In Kapitel 4 wird präzisiert, was in der vorliegenden Arbeit unter Nachhaltigkeit und nachhaltiger Entwicklung verstanden wird. Die Entstehung und Konkretisierung der Idee der Nachhaltigkeit wird summarisch skizziert. Es wird auf unterschiedliche Konzepte der Nachhaltigkeit, insbesondere das der starken Nachhaltigkeit von Döring und Ott, eingegangen. Anschließend wird im fünften Kapitel das Konzept der Bildung für nachhaltige Entwicklung näher beleuchtet. Nach einem kurzen historischen Abriss wird das Verhältnis der BNE zur Umweltbildung geklärt. Der Kompetenzbegriff und das Prinzip der Gestaltungskompetenz werden dargelegt. Kritik am Konzept der Bildung für nachhaltige Entwicklung wird im letzten Unterkapitel diskutiert. Die Verknüpfung von E-Learning und Bildung für nachhaltige Entwicklung bietet einige vielversprechende Anknüpfungspunkte, die im Kapitel 6 besprochen werden. Open learning cultures are challenging the old and long-practiced methods used by educators and transforming learning into a more student-driven and independent activity , which uses online tools such as blogs, wikis or podcasts to connect resources, students and teachers in a novel way. While in higher education institutions most assessments are still tied to formal learning scenarios, teachers are more and more bound to recognize their students’ informal learning processes and networks. This book will help teachers, lecturers and students to better understand how open learning landscapes work, how to define quality and create assessments in such environments, and how to apply these new measures. To this end, Ehlers first elaborates the technological background for more collaborative, distributed, informal, and self-guided learning. He covers the rise of social media for learning and shows how an architecture of participation can change learning activities. These new paradigms are then applied to learning and education to outline what open learning landscapes look like. Here he highlights the shift from knowledge transfer to competence development, the increase in lifelong learning, and the importance of informal learning, user generated content, and open educational resources. He then shows how to manage quality by presenting a step by step guide to developing customized quality concepts for open learning landscapes.
